Childhood Born January 17, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois. She lived in a brick bungalow in Chicago with her older brother, Craig Robinson, her father, Fraser Robinson, and her mother, Marian Robinson. Michelle Obama was a gifted child. She pushed herself by taking gifted and advanced classes in high school.

Early Life and Early Accomplishments. Michelle enrolled at Princeton University in 1981 Majored in Sociology and African American studies. Attended Harvard Law School from 1985-1988. Joined the Chicago law firm Sidney and Austin where she met Barack Obama.

Public Service Worked as Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development in Chicago s City Hall. Co-founded the Chicago s chapter of Public Allies. This program was created to prepare youth for public service.

Early Life and Early Accomplishments In 1996, Michelle Obama became the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago Her goal was to bring the campus and community together. She developed the university's first service program. Promoted to Vice President of Community and External Affairs for the University of Chicago s Medical Center Helped increase the number hospital volunteers.

Present Day In 2010 Michelle Obama launched the Let s Move program. In 2011 Michelle Obama launched Joining Forces program

Let s Move This program started because childhood obesity rates were increasing in America. It encourages parents and children to exercise and to eat healthy. It creates an environment that encourages children to live a healthy lifestyle. It helps decrease the cost of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Joining Forces This program promotes American citizens to show gratitude for the service of US military and their families. Increase employment rates for veterans and show companies the potential veterans have. Help educate veterans in academics and job training. They also help military family members. Help raise awareness on what military families are facing and how citizens can help them.

Influenced the World Michelle Obama influenced the world by being aware of certain non- political problems in the USA and her community. Certain problems are child obesity and support for the military and their families.

Important Facts She is the first African American First Lady. She launched two programs (Let s move and Joining Forces). She encourages people to take more action in their community. She has been very active in her community. She has been an associate attorney.

Significance to African American Community She is important since she is a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights state that African Americans or any minority (Asian, Indian, Egyptian, etc.) should have the same opportunity to achieve the American dream. It is based on the idea that one race is not superior to another. Michelle was able to attend college, become a successful lawyer, worked as a college and hospital administrator, and eventually the first African American First Lady.

What I Learned I learned that Michelle Obama s main goal in life is to help people take part in their communities and to solve problems. She believes that if people work together they can accomplish real-world solutions. She understands something we all should know. We can t accomplish major feats alone. If we are going to overcome a major obstacle we must find a solution together. I respect Michelle s Obama desire to help others and I hope to follow her example.
