The Perks of Being a Wallflower BOOK VS. FILM By: Aleah Speller The Perks of Being a Wallflower movie, directed by the author himself, Stephen Chbosky, is extremely touching and heartfelt. Although not as many details are exposed, it still manages to interest the audience just as the book intrigued me. Some situations that occurred in the book seem to be missing in the movie, but I still feel that author and director, Chbosky made it all fit together surprisingly well. The characters, are not quite as I pictured them, but they are all wonderful actors/actresses. It all seems to fit in well. Honestly the book is better. Here s why: The novel s author jumped right into Charlie s life struggles, and includes unexpected conflicts from other characters as well. The author really stresses how important other people are to Charlie, and how he puts everyone before him. When his sister gets pregnant he s the one who takes her to the doctor, but never mentions it to his family like she asks. He respects that his first love, Sam, doesn t want him to think of her like that at times. There is just so much more to the story than what the movie shows you. I think that all teenagers could really relate to it. Start with watching the movie or reading the book, either way I think everyone will be compelled to try the book. As for me, I was happier reading this amazing novel. Pg. 2
STAR WARS: A New Future? What will happen next? By: Grayson Christian George Lucas is viewed by many people as the creator of the modern age Sci-Fi genre. Lucas, along with a rag tag group of rookie special effects producers made one of the greatest Science Fiction movie franchises of all time. The first movie, Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope hit the big screen on May 25 th, 1977 and soon became a huge success. The franchise grew so large that George Lucas set up Lucasfilm Limited which to date has been the main area of editing, designing, and Imagineering for the Star Wars universe. George Lucas has been in charge for he entire lifespan of Star Wars and Lucasfilm Limited. That is about to change. On October 20 th Disney and Lucas announced that he was selling Lucasfilm Limited and most of his rights to Star Wars to the Disney Corporation, the only company he felt was good enough. Lucas sold his company and rights to Star Wars for 4.05 billion dollars! Half of which he got in cold hard cash! On literally the same day Disney announced its plans to produce three more brand new Star Wars films; episodes seven, eight, and nine. By the next day the Internet was flooded with theories detailing what people thought would be the plot of the next three movies. One theory is that the next movie will be on what many fans call the Hand of Thrawn Trilogy. This series focuses on events that take place almost twenty years after Return of the Jedi, in terms of the Star Wars universe timeline. Many fans see this series as the lost and final chapter of the Star Wars series. Another popular theory states that the new films will focus on a time period long after Luke Skywalker s time and on the adventures of Luke s grandson. This may be the most legitimate theory because the Star Wars timeline has never expanded past seventy years after the battle of Endor (The climax battle of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi). George Lucas and Disney announced that the scripts for the next three movies have been written already and that they have every intention of producing them. Fans of the movie series were already excited by the release of the first Star Wars 3D film and with the announcement of new films being released this has made their excitement swell. Lucas believes that Disney will make the next Star Wars films better than fans are expecting. Will the Disney Star Wars be the same as Lucas Star Wars? Only time will tell. What do you think of this article? Are you a Star Wars fan? If so what do you think of Disney buying Star Wars and producing three new movies? Write to the paper and give us your thoughts. Pg. 3
By: Jessie Gifford Every year on the fourth Thursday of November American s celebrate a day of feasting which you know as Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the excuse to eat as much as you want without any judgment. This year was the 149 th year that Thanksgiving has been celebrated as an official holiday. Thanksgiving has gained many nicknames through its years like T-Day and Turkey Day. With these holidays that have been around for so long there always comes some weird traditions. Unlike other holidays thanksgiving is a home event. Most people spend this day in their house or at a loved one s home spending time with their family and friends. Thanksgiving is a holiday that has molded into almost every Americans life. The main course of the thanksgiving meal is turkey. Since this isn t really an option for vegetarians the Tofurkey was invented. A Tofurkey is essentially what it sounds to be: A turkey made of tofu. The biggest fan of the Tofurkey Iris Jones says, Tofurkey is my favorite holiday tradition. It wouldn t be Thanksgiving without it. Since Thanksgiving is a day of thanks some Americans choose to spend their day volunteering at soup kitchens or donating food. This way they can help out others while gaining a true appreciation for how fortunate they are. One strange tradition is the breaking of the wishbone. You take the bone out of the chest of the chicken or turkey, leave it out to dry until it becomes brittle, then each person takes a side and pulls. The person with the larger half gets their wish to come true. Other traditions of Thanksgiving are watching the huge Macy s Day Parade on TV or watching football after the feast is over. Some foods that people eat that aren t day to day foods are green bean casserole, Jell-O salad and relish and olive trays. In Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated in October. Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Liberia and Switzerland all celebrate Thanksgiving as well. After all this eating and celebrating, you get to wake up early the next morning in time to catch the best deals of the year on Black Friday.
