You can help maintain their strength and lasting beauty by following these general guidelines. A Clean Routine Vacuum or sweep with a soft-bristle broom regularly, especially before using floor cleaners, to prevent gritty dirt and particle buildup that can scratch the wood s surface. Don t use vacuums with a beater bar or power rotary brush head. Wipe up spills and spots immediately with Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Hardwood & Laminate Flooring Cleaner applied directly to a clean white cloth. Use ice to harden tough substances such as candle wax or chewing gum and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe area clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Floor Mats High-quality floor mats and small inside rugs at entrances and exits are key to reducing hardwood wear and abrasion. Outside walk-off mats collect and trap all the corrosive substances that can be tracked in from outdoors, including dirt, sand, grit, oil, asphalt, or even driveway sealer. Also use mats or rugs in areas of high traffic or constant pressure, such as on stair landings and in front of vanities, sinks and stoves. Protective Pads and Proper Precautions Attach felt or similar protective pads to all furniture legs, particularly heavy pieces. When you re moving furniture, appliances or other heavy objects, use a dolly; never slide or roll anything across the floor. If furniture has hard plastic or metal casters/wheels, use protective mats underneath or replace them with soft rubber casters. Ten Hardwood DO s and DON T s Do vacuum and sweep your floor frequently, especially in high-traffic areas. Do not wet-mop, damp-mop, or clean your floor with water or other liquid. Do not use hardwood floor-cleaning or buffing machines or steam cleaners. Do not use 2-in-1 cleaners with polish that may contain acrylics or urethane polish to restore gloss. Often, the result is a richer, deeper appearance made more beautiful over time. This color change is gradual and can occur with any wood product including flooring, cabinets and furniture. Many homeowners never even notice the shift in color from the original purchase to the aged wood, only to be surprised by the difference when a rug or furniture piece is moved. Once exposed, the uncovered section of floor will eventually blend in with the rest of the floor. For this reason, Mohawk samples include a Photosensitivity Chart ranging from 1 to 10, with 1 being the least likely to alter in color with exposure to light and 10 representing a more dramatic change. PLANK COLOR VARIATION Just as every tree is unique, so is every plank of real wood flooring. Species, natural character marks, the method of cutting the face material, and slat selection all contribute to the overall personality of each wood floor. With these factors in mind, Mohawk has created a Plank Color Variation Scale to help consumers understand just how wide a range of plank appearance their floor may have once installed. The scale ranges from low to high, with low denoting the least variation in plank color, and therefore the most subtly patterned and visually consistent floor. High represents the highest variation, resulting in a contrasting random color pattern. SPECIES HARDNESS This scale shows species hardness as measured by the Janka test, which measures force necessary to embed a.444 steel ball halfway into each species. Although no species is impervious to indentation, the higher the ranking the less likely that this will happen with normal usage.
