Decking Thermo Pine decking Heat treated / thermo Pine wood has a thoroughly beatiful brown glow, which can be compared to exotic wood species. The thermo treatment happens at high temperatures and the furnace chamber becomes, through this process, saturated with water vapor to avoid the wood burning. It is during this simple process, that Thermo Pine is made. During the treatment turpentine and formaldehyde, among other resins, disappears from the timber. No chemical additives is added during the isothermal treatment. This heat treatment / thermo-process provides the unique properties of the Thermo Pine - including a long natural life and a unique dimensional stability. 26 117 mm. Small grooved / smooth Lists, sidings and other special productions can be produced to order. Since there are other demands to Thermo Pine decking, than other wood species / decking types, it must be installed according to the following installation guide. DECKING of Thermo Pine installation guide Preparations Mark the area, in which you wish to install your decking, with sticks and white or coloured string. Make sure that the ground is even and levelled. Cover the ground with a membran to prevent grass and various plants growing up between the boards. Laying the joists / wooden frame The frame for the decking is made of beams / joists. Make a distance between the joists of maximum 45 cm. All joists must be parallel, otherwise it will be visible on the line of screws or plugs. Installation of decking Cut the boards in the lenght, you have chosen. We recommend cutting both edges of each board. The first boards are placed against a solid edge with 5 x 60 mm A4 acidproof screws with a flat, sublowered screw head. You may use a cord to ensure, that the boards are correcty placed. Use 2 screws per joist to achieve optimal mounting. Always install the screw minimum 25 mm from the edge of the board through pre-drilled holes, otherwise you risk the board splitting or the screw breaking. Roofing felt: It is recommended that you use roofing felt between board and screw to lead rainwater away and counteract rot. Spacers: Make a gap of minimum 3 mm between the boards for drainage. The first board is placed against a solid edge with a distance of 7-10 mm. Use a string to ensure it is placed properly. Next board is installed parallel to the previous board, and so on. Please note that Thermo Pine boards are reversible, which gives you free choice between the small-grooved and smooth surface. Installation guide decking Installation of joists 1 1 2 1. Tiles as support It is recommended to use joists made out of hardwood. - All joists have to be parallel otherwise it will be visible on the row of screws and plugs. Installation of decking 1. Timber frame as backing Hold a distance between the joists of maximum: 70 cm by 25 mm thickness, 60 cm by 21 mm thickness and 50 cm by 20 mm thickness. Joists made from hardwood of 45 x 68 mm should be a maximum span of 100 cm. 2. Double joists If necessary use double joists at joints. If the decking is installed against a wall, you can with advantage make a slight drop so rainwater will be led away from the wall. 3 4 5 3. Roofing felt 4. Spacers 5. Clamp It is recommended that you use roofing felt between board and screw to lead rainwater away and counteract rot. Attachment with visible screws 6 7 Make a gap of 7-10 mm between the boards so the wood can move around where there is a change in temperature and humidity. The first board is installed against a solid edge with a gap of 7-10 mm. if necessary use a string to make sure that it lays the right way. Since few decking boards are completely straight, you may want to make use of clamps to force the board into the right position during attachment. 6. Pre-drilling of holes Pre-drill the holes with a sub-lowering drill. In this way, the screw is levelled with the surface after fitting. Screw holes have to be at least 25 mm from the edge. 16 Keflico Decking Installation Guide 7. Attachment The decking has to be installed with acidproof A4 steel. The screws should always be installed from above and it should be at minimum 5 x 60 mm t0 20-21 mm decking and and to 25 mm boards you should use 5 x 70 mm screws. 2/3 of the screw should be attached to the underlying wood construction.
Installation guide decking Attachment with plugs 6 7 8 6. Pre-drill of holes 7. Gluing 8. Ungluing of plug Pre-drill the holes with a 15 mm plug drill. Screw holes have to be at least 25 mm from the edge. Typical mistakes that should be avoided The manufactured plugs are installed with waterproof glue. Put the plugs in so the grain from the wood plugs fits with the grain on the decking. Pound in the plug but let some of the plug stick up. Wipe extra glue off immediately. The rest of the plug can be removed with a sharp wood chisel or you can belt sand the whole decking. In spite of which method you have used it is recommended that you sand the decking. If you have used a smooth profile decking, you should always sand down afterwards. Always 25 mm from edge Avoid the wood splitting by installing it min. 25 mm from the edge of the board. Always pre-drill Remember to pre-drill or the screw will break. Always countersink Remember to countersink to provide a smooth surface to walk on. Information about washout and colouring Some wood species can give colour after being installed, until washout due to wind and weather. This is natural. It is also recommended to sweep sawdust from drilling and cutting away immediately, as this can give a reddish color. Also, do not lay tools in raw iron on the patio boards as this may cause discoloration. Metal splinters from cutting can also cause discoloration. IMPORTANT: Do not use hidden brackets because they do not provide the same solid installation as visible screws or plugs provide. STORAGE Storage and installation of hardwood decking should take place outdoors. Storage should be under a roof to avoid direct sunlight and preferably in a place with good ventilation. The boards must be on a level surface; otherwise they may change in shape. The products are only for outdoor use. www.keflico.com 17
Maintenance Once you have decided to invest in a patio or facade in hardwood, there are some fundamental properties of wood, which you should be aware of. Wood is a beautiful and vibrant material throughout its working life. This means that the wood s appearance and colour changes throughout its entire lifetime due to weather influences from the weather such as sun, wind and rain. Most untreated hardwood species patinate with a silver-grey color - As an example see Jatoba on the next page. If you want to preserve the wood s beautiful glow, it will require, that you maintain the decking by cleaning and oiling it once a year. This will protect the wood against weather conditions. You do not necessarily have to invest many hours in your new patio or facade made of hardwood, you just simply have to understand, that its life has only just begun, when it has been installed. Cleaning the patio and facade Over time rain and moisture will make your wooden decking / cladding dirty, this appears in the form of green algae, dirt and other coatings. Therefore you should clean your patio if needed. To clean your patio, rinse it with water, apply the patio-cleaner with a brush and then scrub the surface lengthwise. Afterwards the decking should be rinsed thoroughly. The treatment can be repeated as needed. Are you planning to oil your patio subsequently, you must let the wood dry for a day or so, before you start the oil treatment. Oiling patio and facade A new patio or facade of hardwood should be treated with hardwood oil even before it is used. We recommend that you maintain your wooden deck / facade with oil at least once a year. Use hardwood oil with colour pigments and fungicides. The oil should be UV-resistant and of a non-curing type. In the first season we recommend, that you let the wood be filled by oiling it 2-3 times. The wood patinates, if it does not get oil. The oil protects the wood, because it helps the surface to become more resistant to weather influences. Risks of cracking are reduced by oiling / waxing and it also works as a breath of fresh air to your decking, while it highlights the wood grain. Remember to give the end of the boards some wax. Frequency of oiling depends on how exposed the patio or facade is to wind and weathering. If the wood is not treated often enough, it will patinate and become greyish. How to: 1. Before you begin oiling, you should clean your patio or facade thoroughly. 2. Then check that the patio or facade is completely clean and dry. Oiling shall take place in only dry weather, so the oil gets the best conditions to soak into the wood. 3. The oil should be stirred thoroughly before use. 4. The oil is applied with a brush or other painting tools. Always start with the ends of the boards. 5. After maximum 20 minutes remove excess oil from patio/ facade with a clean and dry cloth. Repeat the above, if the wood does not seem saturated. 6. Do you want to make the surface extra durable; we recommend you to polish your patio/facade with a polishing machine. 7. Depending on the weather, including temperature on the day you treat the decking or cladding with oil, it will take between 24 to 48 hours, before the oil is fully cured. The wood, during this period, just like when you treat it with oil, must NOT be exposed to water. Keflico A/S also supply special oil-products and wax, which are specially made for decking and cladding made of hardwood. Keflico also offers different kinds of fixtures (see at page 10). The products are not suitable for use indoors. 18 Keflico Maintenance Guide Contact us at tel. 9813 3544 or info@keflico.com, if you need further guidance.
