Configuring JSTOR collections in the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS): a quick reference guide For a list of JSTOR collections that are indexed in the EDS index, see http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=5802. As new JSTOR collections are added to the EDS index the EBSCO Support FAQ will be updated. EDS indexes the metadata and article abstracts. For a complete list of JSTOR offerings, see the end of this guide. To ensure that use of your licensed JSTOR collections is optimized within EDS, you will need to: 1. Check your licensed JSTOR collections are correctly activated in your EDS profile and also in the knowledge base of your link resolver. 2. Select your full text linking option(s) and configure appropriately. 3. Check other EDS configuration options. For details on each of these steps, see below. Important Note: This guide has been developed to help libraries configure EDS to most effectively leverage their investment in content on the JSTOR platform. Our research shows that the appropriate configuration of EDS is an important determinant in the discoverability of the content your library licenses from JSTOR. Further, our research indicates that using the CustomLinks option in EDS for the content on the JSTOR platform is the best way to ensure your users connect reliably to JSTOR. We encourage you to strongly consider using the CustomLinks option (described later in the document) with the content you license from JSTOR, as we feel it will provide a quality user experience. Activate the JSTOR collections you license This is a 2-step process, using EBSCOadmin. Configuring JSTOR collections in the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS): a quick reference guide 1
Step 1: Activate the JSTOR datasets in EDS The JSTOR collections in EDS are represented by datasets as follows 1. JSTOR 19 th Century British Pamphlets 2. JSTOR Books 3. JSTOR Journals The JSTOR Books EDS dataset should be activated if you subscribe to any books from JSTOR. The JSTOR Journals dataset should be activated if you subscribe to any journal content on the JSTOR platform, be it an archival collection or a Current Scholarship Program title or package. For details on activating these datasets see the Support FAQ Managing your Content in EDS. See http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=4686 or contact EBSCO customer support. Step 2: Activate JSTOR collections in your link resolver Once you have activated the relevant JSTOR datasets you will need to select the specific JSTOR collections to which you subscribe; and in the case of Books at JSTOR and the Current Scholarship Journals you will need to customize these collections to match your holdings. This should be done using your link resolver knowledge base. To optimally configure your link resolver for JSTOR content, please refer to the relevant JSTOR brief reference guide for the link resolver in use at your library. This activation will ensure that your users can filter EDS results to see only those JSTOR items to which their institution subscribes. Select your linking option(s) and configure appropriately To enable linking from EDS to full text on the JSTOR platform, you should set up one or both of the links below. Administrators can customize full-text links at any time using EBSCOadmin, which also allows a customer to choose to display a single option for users to access full text, or multiple options, including your link resolver. JSTOR CustomLinks The JSTOR CustomLinks connect users reliably to the full text on the JSTOR Configuring JSTOR collections in the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS): a quick reference guide 2
platform. The JSTOR CustomLinks can be configured to include an image on the search results page to clearly identify to users that the full text is available from JSTOR. Once you ve confirmed that the JSTOR databases are included in your EDS profile, you can set up CustomLinks. For instructions on setting up a CustomLink to JSTOR, see this Support FAQ: How do I set up a CustomLink to JSTOR? http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=1289 The JSTOR CustomLink is identfied in EBSCOadmin as JSTOR (All content). Note that in setting up your CustomLinks you will need to select the specific JSTOR collections e. g. Arts & Sciences XII, Business II etc., to be included. Unless you subscribe to all books in Books at JSTOR or all Current Scholarship journals, you will need to create Custom EDS Local s for these and then include these Local s in your configuration. For help on creating Local s, contact eds@ebsco.com. Using a Link Resolver In order to display the link to the link resolver on the search results page, your link resolver needs to be activated as a CustomLink in EDS. The link resolver CustomLink is configured to key off of the local collections and enables the Available in Library (AiLC) limiter, thus displaying the link to your link resolver on all records that are known to be in your library collection. If you are a LinkSource customer, a LinkSource CustomLink will be automatically added to your EDS profile. In addition, your A-to-Z knowledge base collections will be imported to EBSCOadmin to enable the AiLC limiter. If you use a third-party link resolver such as SFX or 360 Link, you will need to set up your link resolver CustomLink and you will be able to import your knowledge base holdings to enable the AiLC limiter. This process should be done as part of the EDS set-up process. For more information on the process for automatically loading your collections in EBSCOadmin see the following Support page: http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?topic=999&id=6776 Ranking Full Text links in EDS EBSCOadmin allows administrators to set the order of the full text links that appear on the EDS result list for each item. For example, if you would like a Configuring JSTOR collections in the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS): a quick reference guide 3
specific CustomLink to appear before EBSCOhost full text or your link resolver option, the order can be adjusted to display it accordingly. The JSTOR entry for selecting ranking is called JSTOR (All Content). It is important to think about the order of the links for your institution because preferences do vary. For more information on CustomLink order, as well as instructions on ordering your CustomLinks, see the Support FAQ Ranking CustomLinks in EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) at http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=6777. Note the option to Show First Available Full Text Only. If this option is checked and an item is available both from EBSCOhost and JSTOR then only the first of these would show i.e. the one that is listed highest in the CustomLink ranking. JSTOR strongly recommends that you carefully consider the setting of this option and CustomLink ordering available to you in EBSCOadmin. JSTOR s To learn which JSTOR collections EBSCO indexes, see What is JSTOR? http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=6710. Review EDS configuration options and other search features 1. Search to include search of the full text of Books at JSTOR The option to include search of the full text should be activated to get the best results. See http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=5330 2. Record de-duplication. For records that match on core fields such as title, author, date, volume, and issue, EDS automatically removes records with lower relevancy from the result list in favor of higher ranked records. For more details on this feature, see this Support FAQ: Does EDS remove duplicate (de-dupe) results from EBSCOhost databases before displaying the results? III includes all primary source collections on JSTOR: Global Plants, Struggles for Freedom in Southern Africa, African Cultural Heritage Sites and Landscapes, and 19th-Century British Pamphlets. ** Early Journal Content is not actually a JSTOR collection. In 2011, JSTOR made journal content published prior to 1923 in the United States, and prior to 1870 elsewhere, freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world. See http://about.jstor.org/service/early-journal-content-0. ***Discipline packages of Current Scholarship titles In 2011-2013, JSTOR sold collections of Current Scholarship titles aligned to the Arts & Sciences I through XII Archive s. JSTOR no longer offers these collections. Discovery partners may retain these as targets if this helps their customers. JSTOR continues to offer Current Scholarship titles grouped by discipline. KBART-compliant title lists are at http://about.jstor.org/content/jstor-title-lists. **** No metadata are available at this time. *****The Sustainability s Sets are not comprised of books with publication dates from a given year or given set of years. For example, Sustainability I might have a book with a publication date of 2005. For all other collections (except Sustainability 2), all the books in the set have the publications year or years that are in the name of the set. ******This is not the name of an actual collection, just a convenient target for libraries who mass order Books at JSTOR. 1) There is no product called JSTOR Complete, but some providers add it as a target for the convenience of librarians. We recommend that it not be used, since there is no simple way to define what products would be covered by this label. 2) JSTOR also offers several information services for individuals, which can be seen at http://about.jstor.org/individuals. None of these offerings should appear in partners linking and discovery services. Configuring JSTOR collections in the EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS): a quick reference guide 9
