International Scout II Tools needed: 9/64 drill bit 1/8 drill bit #2 Philips bit for drill Tape measure Pencil Drill #3 Philips Screwdriver #2 Philips Screwdriver Utility knife Contents: 2 bedrails (2 pieces each) 2 folding frame uprights 2 crossbars (color-coded to mate up with uprights) 2 sets front door surround components (driver side front stickers) 1 header bar 1 header bar spacer 2 self-drilling screw-in snapstuds 8 - #14 x ¾ pan head screws 7 1 /8 x ½ self-drilling screws 2 ½ x ¾ hex bolts with washer and wing nut 2 plastic deck hinges with mounting screws 2 thumb screws 2 black plastic parts and screws for rear window panel crossbar 1 53 long 7 /8 crossbar 2 12 long ¾ bars 2 adjustable webbing straps to tension center crossbar 6 18 x ¾ webbing straps 3 pieces of Velcro 1 Softopper canopy 1 bottle seam sealer 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 1

Step 1 Join the front and rear portions of the square tube bedrails. Remove the white protective tape from the weather stripping. Using the utility knife slit the weather stripping at each of the slot locations. There may be some slight adjustments to the bedrails later. Attach the black plastic parts to the rear ends of the bedrails using the #12 screws. See photo. The plastic parts are marked with an "A" or a "B". Part marked "A" goes on the driver side bedrail and "B" goes on the Passenger side bedrail. For Illustration These photos represent the rear of the driver-side bedrail Step 2 Place the bedrails into position on the vehicle and align the rear end of each bedrail with the body seam as shown. Mark drill locations in the center of each of the bedrail slots. Drill the holes in the 4 slot locations with a 9/64" drill bit and loosely mount the bedrails using the #14 x 3/4" screws. Note: You may need to slide the bedrails slightly forward or rearward once the canopy is installed to achieve proper fit. Note: Your bedrails will have slots, replacing the hole shown in photo 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 2

Step 3 Assemble the folding frame arms and the 2 crossbars using the color codes. Slip the small loops of the provided webbing straps around the rear crossbar before joining. It is the bar with the snaps. These adjustable straps will be used to help support the canopy and frame between the two cross bars. Best placement for the straps is between the 3rd and 4th snap. Ensure that the push buttons lock in place. Step 4 Attach the completed frame assembly to the pivot points on the bedrails by removing the circlips and fitting the pivot pins through the holes at the bottom of the folding frame. Reinstall the circlips. Lay the folding frame rearward and loosely attach the 3/4" webbing strap hooks to the black plastic parts on the rear of the bedrails. Step 5 Install the black plastic deck hinges to the windshield corners using the 1/8" self-drilling screws (see photo). These angled deck hinges should be angled inward. The parts should be mounted into the corner as close as possible to what the picture illustrates. Use the 2 outermost holes that are predrilled into the deck hinges. Do not over tighten as this may cause them to strip out. Join the components of the door surround to the forward crossbar. (driver-side front sticker on flat bar) by removing the screws from the black plastic jawslides and re-installing using the thumb screws provided. Remove the pin and circlip from the forward mounted deck hinge, place the forward end of the door surround into the part and re-install the pin and circlip. Install the 7/8" bar with the black plastic flap to the flat bar using the 1/4" x 3/4" hex bolts washers and wing-nuts (a sticker indicates driver-side front). 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 3

Remove the small screw from the plastic deck hinges, which are mounted on the leading edge of each bedrail. Install the vertical door surround bar using the provided thumb screws or re-using the screws you just removed. Step 6 Installing the header bar to the windshield. Included is a flat plastic strip that is used to help achieve the proper placement of the windshield header. When drilling the holes into the top of the vehicle's windshield lip, place the plastic strip underneath the aluminum header bar and press down on the header bar against the plastic (see photo). This will help to ensure the proper horizontal clearance. The outermost screw holes should line up with the body seam of the vehicle (see photo below right). 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 4

Step 7 Unfold the canopy top and place it on the tailgate in a way you can attach the rear crossbar to the snap flap on the upper rear portion of the canopy. Remember to place the webbing straps between the 3rd and 4th snaps on each end of the rear crossbar. Pull the canopy forward and up and over the crossbars. Fit the plastic strip (on leading edge of canopy) into the header bar channel on the windshield header. Step 8 Install the side window panels. Attach the zippers from the rear to the front. Note: The adjustable zippers are attached in a centered location to the top with Velcro at the factory. Note: You may need to adjust the Velcro zippers for a better fit. Attach the sides to the bedrails starting at the front moving rearward. New canopies can be quite tight, especially in colder weather. Pull down on the rear portion of the frame to help with the rear snaps if necessary. Now attach the snaps to the inside of the door surround flat bar. You can now move your bedrails and/or zippers to desired locations to achieve the best fit, and bedrail can be tightened down. Note: See photo on page 3. Only one snap will be installed on each side of the vehicle. The second snap in the photo is from an earlier model top that was previously installed on the vehicle. Step 9 Installing the self-drilling snap studs to the outside corners of the windshield. Pull down on the 'dog ear' corners on front of the canopy to make a tight seal. Make a mark on the vehicle where the center of the snap on the canopy will mate up with the self drilling snap stud. Pre-drill a 1/8" pilot hole where you have marked the vehicle. This will help accuracy of the self drilling screw placement. Step 10 Install the rear window panel. Attach the zippers to the side panels. Find the center and attach the Velcro at the top. Step 11 Rear Bar Flap Insert a 12-inch bar tube into each end of the longer 7/8-inch tube, with the plastic end caps out. Press the bar assembly into the snap-fit parts on the bedrail, adjusting the total length as necessary for a tight side-to-side fit. The idea is to have the larger tube centered and have as little side-toside movement as possible once secured in the plastic parts and have equal lengths of the smaller tubes protruding from each end. Mark the location of where the smaller tubes enter the larger tube. The longer tube has predrilled holes in each end. These holes will be Not to Scale used to guide the 1/8 x ½ self drilling screw into the smaller tube. Install the 1/8 x ½ self drilling screw and repeat on the other end. Insert the finished tube assembly into the window panel sleeve, press into snap-fit parts on both sides and check fit. 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 5

Step 12 Install the Velcro to the outside of the tailgate to hold rear window panel in place. It is recommended that you clean the surface with a 50/50 mix of water and isopropyl alcohol. Included are six 18 x ¾ webbing straps with side release buckles. These can be used for rolling up the sides. Insert them behind the Velcro zippers along the sides of the canopy at equal distances. It is recommended that you remove the side and rear windows when retracting the canopy when possible. Note: if you decide to leave the windows in place when retracting or if you will be rolling up the windows there is a higher chance of the windows becoming distorted and/or scratched over time. When retracting the top with the windows in place, it is recommended that you flip the sides and rear window panels up onto the roof and carefully fold the canopy as neatly as possible rearward. It is highly recommended that the boot cover / storage bag is used when the topper is in its retracted position. This will prevent the top from catching in the wind. If you decide to use the supplied Seamsure, be sure to apply to the inside of the canopy. Do not allow the liquid to come in contact with the outer vinyl coating of the canopy. Warranty We warrant our 4Runner, Blazer, Jimmy, Scout and Bronco Softoppers to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year, with the exception of vinyl windows and zippers, provided there has been normal use and proper maintenance. Vinyl Windows are warranted for a period of 3 months from the date of purchase. Zippers are guaranteed to be in perfect working condition when leaving the factory. Due to atmospheric conditions, dirt, sand, road grime, dust, and abrasive cleaners, etc., zippers are warranted for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase. Toyota 4 Runner, Blazer and Jimmy side curtain windows are warranted for 45 days from the date of purchase. Important: Retracting or closing the top when the temperature is below 40 degrees is asking for trouble. This will void the warranty on the windows, as clear vinyl plastic can crack very easily at these temperatures. This top is meant to be a warm-weather topper. It is not intended to be used during cold temperatures or winter months. Returns must be pre-approved and have Softoppers issued RGA number attached. Any defective items must be returned with proof of purchase to Softopper 4750 Nautilus Ct South, Unit B, Boulder CO 80301, freight pre-paid. Items returned must be carefully packed, in clean condition, with plastic windows protected from scratching and creasing. This warranty does not cover damage resulting from abuse, misuse, alteration, accident or damage in transit. Softoppers obligations under this warranty are limited to the aforementioned repair or replacement of warranty defects for which return authorization has been received during the warranty period, and Softopper SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM BREACH OF THIS OR ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY. This warranty applies to the original purchaser only. All remedies under this warranty are limited to repair or replacement of any item or items found to be defective by the factory within the time period specified. For further information or request for repair work, please contact: Softopper LLC, customer service (800) 810-7227 or (303) 304-0533 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 8

Softopper Care and Maintenance Your top is made of the finest materials available. To keep it looking new and for product longevity and durability, it will need periodic cleaning and maintenance. Washing: The fabric should be washed from time to time using a mild soap and warm water. Be sure to rinse all soap off the top when washing is complete. Vinyl Windows: Windows should be kept clean to avoid scratching. Wash with a watersoaked sponge or cloth and a mild dishwashing detergent. Do not use a coarse brush on the windows and never wipe the windows when they are dry. Cold weather: As with all automotive and marine clear vinyls, extreme care must be taken when rolling up or folding in cold temperatures. This point cannot be stressed enough! Clear vinyl becomes stiff in cold temperatures and may crack. Retracting the Softopper in cold temperatures is not recommended. When opening the rear of the Softopper in cold weather, be sure to raise the zippers as high as possible so that any folding will occur to the topper fabric and not to the clear vinyl window. Zippers: Keeping the zippers clean and lubricated with a silicone lubricant will help prevent damage and keep the zippers in smooth working condition. Leakage: As with any sewn automotive top there is always a slight risk of leakage. Right out of the box the Softopper will not be waterproof. Water seeping through at the seams may be stopped by applying Seam Sure (supplied), on the inside of the affected seams. Shake Seam Sure well and apply liberally to the inside seams concentrating on areas where needle and thread penetrated the fabric. Snaps: Keep snaps clean and lubricated with a silicone lubricant to help prevent snaps from sticking to the studs. If a snap does become stuck to a stud, use a screwdriver and gently pry apart to prevent damage to the snap or top fabric. If any snaps need to be replaced due to sticking or damage please call Softopper and we can send out a small do-it-yourself repair kit. For further information please contact: Softopper LLC, customer service (800) 810-7227 or (303) 304-0533 1-800-810-7227 www.softopper.com Page 9
