How to Host A Meetup + tips n' tricks brought to you by BarkLive

Think about your community. Think about the dog owners and lovers you know in your area. These can be friends, neighbors, dog park acquaintances, etc. Come up with a rough number in your head of how many people you would expect to attend a BarkBox meetup (keep in mind typically 50% of your invite list will show up to an event). As you figure out location and promotion, having a ballpark number of attendees is useful. Do you think this would be an event for 15 people, or for 55? That can help you determine where to host the event. In the promotion section, we'll share different ways to get more people to come to your event, from direct invites to flyers. 2

Determine your location. If the weather is nice, there are so many options for where to host a BarkBox Meetup! Local dog parks are a good idea for casual, low-key hangouts. 3

Dog-friendly bars can be a fun change from the regular dog park scene. Bars will often let you reserve an area for your group, free, on a Monday or Tuesday evening when it s slow. Is there a patio? Or easy access to the outdoors? Make sure folks understand they are buying their own the meetup is for the community to connect (and snag some sweet BarkBox swag), but you re not hosting an open bar. Check that the music won t be too loud. You definitely want a place where people can hear each other and that isn t too crowded or noisy for the pups. Finally, if you have a dog-friendly office, that can be a great place for a meetup! If you promise to clean-up and take care of the space, many offices have open areas and kitchens that can be useful for a meetup with snacks. 4

Promotion Depending on the size of your community and the type of Meetup you want to host, you can email your friends directly, print out flyers to hang in the neighborhood and at the dog park, and/or use social media to promote. Make sure to include RSVP information on all of your promotion (can be as simple as your email address). If you book space at a bar, you can also ask them to put the event on their website many have event listing calendars. 5

E-mailing If you have an email list, send a digital invite to the event! Here s some sample copy to get those tails wagging: Hellarf! You are cordially invited to a BARKBOX MEETUP!. I'm throwing this mixer to get to know pupscribers in the neighborhood, and BarkBox is sending over buckets of free swag for everyone. It s going down on DAY, MONTH, YEAR at LOCATION, from TIME to TIME. Please reply letting me know if you can make it! Tell all of your pup-lovin friends, too! 6

Printing flyers This can be a great way to get more folks at your meetup. Kinkos/FedEx is a great place to print flyers cheaply (or, if you have a home computer, that works too!). Restaurants, cafes, bars, and stores will often let you leave a stack of flyers at their register for a free community event. Social Media This can be a great way to get more folks at your meetup. Kinkos/FedEx is a great place to print flyers cheaply (or, if you have a home computer, that works too!). Restaurants, cafes, bars, and stores will often let you leave a stack of flyers at their register for a free community event. Flyers don't need to be anything fancy, just list the event name (ie BarkBox Meetup), date, time, and location, and that it's free and everyone is invited! Don't forget to list an email address where folks can RSVP. you'll find a handy pre-made flyer on page 11. just add the details for your event! 7

At the Meetup Hooray, your event is happening! First thing in the morning, call the venue (if applicable) to make sure they know what time your group is arriving (and give them the updated RSVP count). Then prepare your bag for the event: you ll want name tags, the BarkBoxes, BarkBox swag, BarkBox discount cards, pens, a camera, and some extra poop bags. If you have one, it might be nice to bring a first aid kit as well. Always better safe than sorry. If you didn t use an email list to invite people to the Meetup, have some paper available to collect everyone s emails. It s a great way to stay-in touch after the event. Plan to arrive at the event 30 minutes early. As you walk around and talk to people, remind them to hashtag their photos with #barkbox and #barklive on social media. We ll repost the best shots! 8

To avoid lulls in the meet-up, here are some ideas to keep things lively: Toy/treat swap. Tell folks ahead of time that if they have treats their pups don t or can t eat, bring them to the event for a swap with others. Give away the BarkBoxes to lucky winners. For example, give every attendee a number when they enter, and toward the end of the event pick a number out of a hat. The lucky number wins a BarkBox! Group photo shoots. It s really fun to see group pictures organized by dog breed, size, color, etc. Try lining up all the corgis for a shot, or all the pit bulls, etc. Party themes. If your meetup is happening around the holidays, you might consider adding a theme, like bestdressed. The winner can bring home a BarkBox. 9

After the Meetup Congratulations on your first BarkBox Meetup! We can t wait to see your pictures. If you collected email addresses, it s always nice to send a little thank you after the event. Sort through your photos, find one or two of the best ones, and send a thank you attaching the photos. You can let people know that all of your images will be posted at barkbox.com/events in the following weeks. Thanks for being part of our pack and for hosting a BarkBox Meetup in your community! 10
