Dear Rising Fifth Graders, you. June 1, 2017 We hope you will plan to go to the public library often this summer to select books which interest The enclosed book list represents a wide range of fifth grade reading material. Some books may appear too easy and others too difficult, so please select your books carefully. Before checking out or buying a book, open to the center page and get a view of the difficulty of vocabulary and the style of the writer. It is better to read a book fluently than to feel discouraged with a book that is dull or difficult. You must read at least five (5) books; two of the books you read must be the ones listed below: Please read the Greek Myths book before you read the The Lightning Thief. Your knowledge of Greek Myths will make the Percy Jackson series more meaningful. First Required Reading (choose one): D AULAIRE S BOOK OF GREEK MYTHS Ingi D Aulaire or Adventures of the Greek Heroes McLean, Mollie and Anne Wiseman Second Required Reading: The Lightning Thief Rick Riordan (if you have already read The Lightning Thief, please read a book in the Percy Jackson series you have NOT read or re-read the Lightning Thief.) Then choose one of the following projects. Your project may be based on either of the two required reading books. 1. Advertise a book by designing a poster. Be sure to include the title of the book, the author, and one of your favorite scenes from the story. 2. Write a poem about your chosen book. 3. Choose one character and write a paragraph summarizing his or her importance to the story. On the first day of school you will have an opportunity to share your chosen project. When you have read a book, write the title and author on the record sheet at the end of the Fifth Grade list. Bring the record sheet, signed by yourself and your parents to class on the first day of school. We look forward to teaching you next year and hope you have a wonderful summer. Sincerely, Your 5 th Grade Teachers 1
