June 1, 2017 Dear Rising Sixth Graders, We wish you a summer filled with fun, excitement, rest, and wonderful reading. We hope you will discover many new authors and find read-aloud times to share books with family and friends. We have prepared the following list that starts you on that wonderful journey. Rising sixth graders are expected to read at least five books this summer. The three required books are: Chief Joseph: The Voice For Peace by Lorraine Jean Hopping, The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine, and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. All three books can be found on Amazon or at Politics and Prose. Please be sure that you get the correct book for Chief Joseph. It is a biography by Sterling Press. We encourage you to read Chief Joseph in the month of August so that it is fresh in your mind as it is the anchor text we use for the first month of school. You will find recording sheets in the back of this booklet that provide space for you to take some notes and answer some important questions. Besides the three required books, we invite you to select at least two additional books to read. You may choose them from the attached list, but you are not limited to only these books. Please record the titles and authors on the record sheets at the end of the Sixth Grade list and make sure you remember to bring your sheets and books with you to school on the first day. We encourage diversity in reading and hope each of you will discover a new type of book and at least one new author. Ambitious and extensive reading will be duly recognized. We look forward to teaching you next year, and hope you have a wonderful summer. Sincerely, Your 6 th Grade Teachers 1
