Using the Number Worlds Placement Tests Each level of Number Worlds contains a placement test to determine whether students understand the content in each level of the program. Every placement test assesses knowledge of two adjacent levels of Number Worlds so you can observe and compare information about which level s content is appropriate for each student. Placement Tests in Levels A C Number Worlds Levels A C are targeted for use by students in Grades PreKindergarten through Grade 1. The tests at these levels consist of teacher s instructions and reproducible test masters. The test questions for these levels are intended to be read to the students while the test administrators track students answers on the Placement Test Record on page 99. If students demonstrate understanding of more than 7% (at least 14 of 18) of the test items, continue to assess student comprehension using the test for the next level. If students do not demonstrate understanding of at least 14 items, they should begin instruction in that level of the Number Worlds Program. To gain an even more thorough understanding of a student s knowledge of number, use the Number Knowledge Test on pages 101 112 of this Assessment book. The Number Knowledge Test was designed to assess central conceptual knowledge typically acquired by children around the ages of 4, 6, 8, and 10 years. 6 Assessment Overview

Placement Tests in Levels D H Number Worlds Levels D H are targeted for use by students in Grades 2 6. Placement of students at these levels should begin by evaluating their success on the reproducible Placement Tests on pages 12 23. You may choose to assess students on only one topic of concern or assess students on their knowledge of several topics at each level. In Levels D H, the placement tests may be administered to children by a teacher, classroom aide, or parent helper. The assessment consists of topic-specific tests at two levels. The first page assesses knowledge of content in the previous level, and the second page assesses knowledge of the content covered at this level. If students demonstrate understanding of more than 7% of the items on the second page of the test, administer the Unit Placement Test for the next level.
