The Hague Summer School Do you want to make a difference in the world? Are you interested in looking at global issues from an interdisciplinary perspective? Join The Hague Summer School in the Netherlands. There is no better place to learn and practice world citizenship than in and around The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice and the political, cultural heart of the Netherlands. The Hague University of Applied Sciences encourages everyone to invest in change. We want to educate people to become world citizens to improve the world we live in. That is only possible if we work together, evolve and change ourselves. If we take a critical look at our present and future situation, we will see that we need new perspectives and solutions. We will find them more quickly if we constantly share and learn to apply one another s insights, skills and methods. Modular course The Hague Summer School at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS) is a cutting-edge, two to four week modular course, which looks at solving global challenges. You will approach worldwide issues from new angles. You ll gain a unique and international experience, with fellow students and lecturers from all over the world, with diverse backgrounds and different areas of expertise. Sustainable cities This year s topic is How to keep cities sustainable in the future. With changing demographics worldwide and growing of cities, a global rise can be seen in the importance of keeping cities sustainable. The programme is made up of a general and an elective module of your choice, taught over a two to four week period. Programme The Hague Summer School 3-28 July 2017 First period 3-14 July Morning (9.00 11.00) Afternoon (11.15 17.00) Interdisciplinary module (1 ects) Global Trends for Sustainable Cities Cities are growing at high rates all over the world. Reducing the footprint of urban inhabitants is very important, for reducing climate change, recourse depletion but also for making cities more resilient to catastrophes. In this module, students will work on improving urban systems and evaluate various options to innovate the metabolism of a specific urban area. A third elective module will be available, check the website www.thehaguesummerschool.com (information online March 1st) Elective module (3 ects) Entrepreneurship for the Next Economy Entrepreneurs are developing new products and services in global societies. As the world changes, so does their business. You will learn about new types of enterprises and become familiar with innovative financial models and strategies promoting entrepreneurship in society. Find your own entrepreneurship through theory and practical workshops. Elective Module: Urban Delta Developments Worldwide In 2050, 650 million people will live in delta and coastal urban regions. Cities in these areas face challenges such as climate change, sea-level rise, land subsidence, climate refugees and the competition of valusable grounds. During this module you will explore the effects of urbanizing deltas on the environment, land-use, social-economic systems, vital infrastructures and governance. Second Period 17-28 July Morning (9.00 11.00) Afternoon (11.15 17.00) Interdisciplinary module (1 ects) Social Trends in cities in the 21th Century Sustainability encompasses environmental, social and economic improvements. During this module you will get inspired by real life examples of sustainable solutions to wicked problems related to social trends and issues in cities. Interesting speakers from our university, public and private organisations in and around The Hague share their knowledge with you. A third elective module will be available, check the website www.thehaguesummerschool.com (information online March 1st) Elective module (3 ects) Human rights, security and development In this module, you will be introduced to modern security challenges, the protection of human rights and the socio-economic development agenda for countries and populations suffering from grave injustices and poverty. Examples used will encompass the theme sustainable cities and show the consequenses growing cities have on human rights, security and development. Leadership for sustainable innovations The world needs innovative leadership and bottom-up solutions to face major sustainable issues (social, ecological and economical). This elective aims at broadening participants perspectives in current and urgent social issues, like sustainable cities. It is an open, experimental space for students and young professionals to explore their leadership skills with a special focus on bottom-up organizing. The Hague, as a city of peace & justice, offers the perfect environment for that.

Reasons to apply for The Hague Summer School Teaching methods Because we are a Dutch university of applied sciences, you will experience a hands-on, open-minded and interactive learning environment. We employ a problem-solving approach, just like the professional world, with exercises that nurture personal and leadership skills, like games, debates and group work. Our guest lecturers come from the private and public fields in The Hague and The Netherlands. You can earn four or eight European Credit Transfer Systems (ECTS) points at The Hague Summer School by passing different elements and tests. Social programme New friendships are a foundation for new and fruitful cooperation in the future, The Hague University is not just about studying. You are also here to discover the city of The Hague and have fun. All students are paired with buddies (students) from Thuas. During the evenings and on the weekends students of the Summer School can attend and extensive social and cultural programme. (1) (2) (3) (4) The summer course is held in The Hague, the United Nations City of Peace, Justice and Security, packed with 131 international institutions, 80 justice organisations, 300 international businesses and numerous NGOs. You ll gain an all-round international classroom experience with fellow students, lecturers and professionals from different cultural backgrounds. You ll prepare yourself for a future career in a multi-national organisation, enrich your personal growth and develop your talents through teamwork, debate and sharing knowledge. You ll make new international friends during planned social activities. Fees Two-week course 1499 euros Four-week course 2998 euros Including tuition, study materials, lunches and accommodation at the Student Hotel. Students from partner universities will be eligible for a discount. You should account for local travel costs, subsistence costs and your travel to and from The Hague. The course is held in The Hague, the United Nations City of Peace, Justice and Security. About The Hague THUAS is located right in the heart of The Hague, so you will get an all-round cultural experience, from galleries packed with Dutch masters to idyllic beaches and parks and buzzing nightclubs. The Hague is known as the International City of Peace, Justice and Security and is bursting with international legal institutions. Since 1913, the Peace Palace has been a centre of world justice, hosting the permanent Court of Arbitrations and the International Court of Justice. You ll also find the International Yugoslavia Tribunal, Europol and the International Criminal Court in The Hague, along with many other courts, tribunals and NGOs. You will feel at home straightaway in The Hague. The city has all the benefits of a big city - the museums, restaurants and transport links - with a welcoming village feel. The Hague itself has many cultural highlights, including Mauritshuis and the Municipal Museum. The city also boasts excellent theatres and music venues.
