Viva TPS October 2010 TS11/15 Total Stations Connect the CS Controller and TS15 with the RH15 Summary This guide will show how to connect the TS15 instrument and CS controller for remote operation. This guide will use the configuration of the TS15 instrument with a RH15 radio handle and a CS controller with the internal total station radio. The example will use the Wizards found in Viva SmartWorx on the TS instrument and CS controller. 2010 Leica Geosystems Inc. All rights reserved
Connecting TS15 Instrument and CS Controller Type and References There are four options to connect a CS controller to a TS15 instrument for communications. The four options are via a cable connection, with a Bluetooth connection, an external radio or an RH15 radio handle. The connection method that offers the longest range of distance between the instrument and the controller is done by using the RH15 radio handle mounted on the TS15 instrument and the internal radio contained in the CS controller or an external radio. This is the typical setup used when this system is being used as a robotic total station. Please refer to Leica TS11/TS15 User Manual, Pages 69 70 for explanation of LED indicators for RH15 and Pages 170-171 for Technical Specifications of RH15 Please refer to the Leica Viva Series Technical Reference Manual version 3 for: Chapter 15, pages 302 313 for TPS Wizard Chapter 16, pages 314 320 for CS Wizard Page 2/9
CS Wizard on TS15 Accessing Wizard To access the CS connection Wizard on the TS15, select the Instrument icon in the main menu Next, select Connect to Instrument Finally, select the icon for the CS connection wizard Page 3/9
CS Wizard on TS15 Settings for CS Wizard on TS The wizard now prompts the user to select which software is running on the CS controller. To work with Viva SmartWorx onboard the CS controller, select: SmartWorx Viva and then F1 (Next). The Wizard now wants you to select the device which will be used on the TS to connect to the CS controller. In this example we will be using a RH15 radio handle. So to use the RH15 selection, choose Radio Handle in the Connect using: field. The TS15 will automatically detect if a radio handle is attached to the instrument and also which type is attached. The RH15 or the older RH1200 can both be automatically detected. Note: only the RH15 radio handle will communicate with the internal radio built into models of the CS controllers. The system should display Rh15 attached. Next, choose the F1 (Next) key. Page 4/9
CS Wizard on TS15 Settings for CS Wizard on TS In the next step you need to designate the link number to be used between the radios and also the mode that the RH15 needs to be operating. The link number can be compared to a channel on other radios but it is not the same. These radios use a 2.4 MHz frequency hopping method and the unit used as the base and the unit used as the remote must follow the same pattern to remain connected. One of the challenges of frequency-hopping systems is to synchronize the base and the remote. The link number used on the RH15 (base) must match the link number used on the CS controller (remote). The link number is a designation that is used when both radios initial link and then both units will follow the same frequency-hopping pattern. So, in the Link number: field you can choose values between 0 and 15. So the user has 16 total choices of the link number that can be used. Choose a number between 0 and 16 and enter it into the Link number: field. Please remember this number because the same number will need to be used to configure the radio on the CS controller. Finally select F1 (OK). The wizard is now finished with setting up the RH15 on the TS15 for communicating with the CS controller. Compete the Wizard by selecting F1 (Finish). You will be returned to the main menu of Viva SmartWorx. Page 5/9
TPS Wizard on CS Accessing Wizard You now need to step through the TPS connection wizard on the CS controller to complete the connection process. From the main menu on the CS controller, choose the Instrument icon. Next, select the Connect to Instrument icon. Finally, select the TPS connection wizard icon. Page 6/9
Settings for TPS Wizard on CS In the first step of the wizard select the instrument type as Leica in the Manufacturer: field. Select the Model: field as TS11/TS15 and the Connect using: field should be set to Internal radio. Select the F1 (next) key to continue to the next step in the wizard. In the second step you need to select the Link Number. Make sure you have entered the same value for the link number as was enter for the link number on the TS instrument. The CS controller will be the remote unit in the connection so select the value of Remote in the Set as: field. Finally, select F1 (Next) and the internal radio in the CS will start to scan for the RH15. Page 7/9
Connecting TS15 Instrument and CS Controller Settings for TPS Wizard on CS After the CS internal radio finds and successfully links to the RH15 on the TS instrument, the system will announce Connected to Total Station and you will see the message that the Wizard is complete and the connection is successful. Please select F1 (Finish) to exit the Wizard and return to the Main Menu of Viva SmartWorx. on CS Successful Status You will notice the icon for the total station connection will now show that the instrument has an incoming signal from the TS by the pulsing arrow pointing inwards to the symbol for the instrument. This means that data is being transferred from the instrument. Page 8/9
Connecting TS15 Instrument and CS Controller Successful Status on TS Now that the connection is complete between the TS and CS, please observe the display on the TS instrument. You will notice that once the connection is made the TS instrument will only display the message This total station is currently being remotely controlled. The horizontal angle reading, vertical angle reading, and slope distance (latest measured) of the TS is displayed. However, the keyboard of the TS is fully locked and will not allow any functionality. You will need to put the CS in Sleep mode or power the CS completely in order for the TS to unlock so that you can interface with the TS keyboard. You have successfully connected your TS15 with the RH15 to the CS controller and its internal radio for remote operation.
