Friends Life Ltd. 1 416.04641.00001 Eden Westwood Development LVIA August 2016 APPENDIX 3: METHODOLOGY FOR PHOTOMONTAGES 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 This document has been prepared by SLR Consulting to explain the methodology used for producing verifiable photomontages. The methodology follows the Guidelines for Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, Third Edition, 2013, prepared by the Landscape Institute/Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, and Landscape Institute Advice Note 01/11: Photography and Photomontage in Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment. 2.0 PHOTOGRAPHY 2.1 The camera used is a Nikon D90 SLR digital camera with a 50mm equivalent lens (Advice Note 01/11, Section 4.0). This has been shown to most closely represent that of the human eye. 2.2 A 360 degree panoramic photograph is captured in portrait format, with an overlap of no less than 20% in each photograph. A level tripod is used to ensure that the panoramic image is as flat as possible to reduce any error in the 3D phase of photomontage creation. The final photomontage is sized so that the image will give an accurate representation when held at a certain distance from the eye. This distance is provided on the framed sheet of each photomontage. 3.0 SURVEY 3.1 Each agreed photograph viewpoint location is recorded using either handheld GPS or roving GPS equipment. The location data is recorded in OS coordinates (OSGB1936) so that the information can be reproduced in AutoCAD. The captured data can then be generated relative to the subject of the photomontage, which is also located using OS coordinates. The height of the camera from the ground is also measured and recorded (Advice Note 01/11, para. 4.3). 3.2 Figure 1 illustrates the surveyed data points imported into CAD. These are OS aligned and combined with the development data: Figure 1: CAD Survey Data SLR

This comprises real world information such as kerbs, building features, lamp posts and road markings (where it is safe to capture). When roving GPS equipment is used, a series of artificial points are also recorded. These take the form of the ranging rods used by the survey team. They are generally spread in the image from far left, central to far right; ideally at different distances to avoid a straight line. The rod positions are photographed so they can be matched to their digital equivalent. 3.4 Figure 2 illustrates how by combining the captured data with the photograph, the view is aligned. This ensures there are enough control points in the scene to generate an accurate model representation: Figure 2: Survey Data Aligned To View 3.5 The panorama is captured in RAW format, and to ensure an even tonal representation of the scene the f-stop for each image is altered to + and - of the main image. The recorded images are combined, stitched and balanced in an industry standard stitching software package; SLR uses PTGUI software for this process. This enables access to all the EXIF camera information recorded at the time of capture. This provides us with the correct lens, including the digital sensor multiplier, to match a film-based SLR camera, ISO level exposure and time of photograph. 3.6 Figure 3 shows the 360 stich with a cylindrical projection in PTGUI: SLR

Friends Life Ltd. 3 416.04641.00001 Eden Westwood Development LVIA August 2016 Figure 3: PTGUI 3.7 The information found in this data is then replicated within the digital modelling software. 3.8 The stitching process is automatic and the projection used for the stich is set to cylindrical. If 360 degree images were not possible, the software provides the Horizontal Field of View which then can be set in the software camera settings. 4.0 3D MODEL 4.1 A 3D model of the proposed development is built from architect/client's plans and elevations, or an existing 3D model from the architect/client is used. If a 3D model needs to be created, this is done using 2D drawings for the proposed development supplied by the architect/engineer and imported into 3D Studio Max. The drawings are traced over to create an accurate 3D 1:1 scale model of the proposals. A crosscheck of heights and widths is then carried out between the 3D model and 2D CAD plans. Once the 3D model is approved by the architect/engineer, it is used to produce the photomontages. 5.0 PHOTOMONTAGE CREATION 5.1 The 3D model is aligned to OS coordinates, together with the camera viewpoint position. Additional tools are used such as Panorama Terrain Data which is added to the scene to aid viewing alignment. This data is more valuable when a handheld GPS is used. The camera can be aligned to match the terrain based on its input location lens and height. 5.2 Once all points of the 3D model match the background image, the view is deemed to match and a full rendered image can then be created. 5.3 The software used is 3DS Max with a VRAY plugin. The VRAY camera has more real world settings and can therefore create a more accurate representation of the scene. The actual camera settings, together with the VRayRT function and VRay Cameras projection set to warped camera spherical (old style), are used. The FOV is set to the stitched output settings and the image aligned. 5.4 Figure 4 shows the VRAY render settings for aligning the viewpoint. The render SLR

Rendering is carried out in full production mode: Figure 4: VRAY Settings 5.5 The information from the viewpoint photograph is entered into the 3D software and the survey information is used to orientate the camera in the correct direction. Lighting conditions are matched as closely as possible and the view is then rendered. Once the final output from the 3D software is generated, it is then overlaid onto the original background photograph. Figure 5 illustrates the combined survey data and development proposals aligned to the image. There is also existing terrain set within the scene to provide additional verification on the alignment of the image: Figure 5: Combined Data 5.6 Any foreground elements that may obscure the proposed development are then layered back over the top of the rendered image in order to give a true representation of the impact of the development. 5.7 The final image is then framed on a drawing sheet, together with the existing photograph, for direct comparison. The drawing sheets display information on the viewpoint's location and orientation. The final photomontage is sized so that the image will provide an accurate representation when held at a certain stated distance SLR

This distance is provided on the framed sheet of each photomontage. 5.8 Figure 6 represents the final image with post production work in Photoshop. Foreground data obscuring the view is overlaid on top of the render to give the impression the development is sitting within its context: SLR
