Members are welcome to attend and/or bring issues to the Committee at these meetings. The next Management Committee meeting will take place Monday 7 September 2015 at 4.30 pm. All members are welcome. A word from the President. The glaze room extension is finished, thanks to an infrastructure grant of $ 38,000 from the Cairns Regional Council and we now also have the spray booth in place. This month we hope to start getting all the raw glaze materials placed in the room, plus plenty of glazes sorted out. The Cairns Show pottery and sculpture display this year (see page 4) did not have as many entries as last year. Hopefully next year we will have more works by Cairns Potters Club members on display. Adil Writer -potter/painter & architect from Mandala pottery in Auroville India conducted a great workshop at the clubhouse Sunday 19 July ( page 7) where all who attended learnt new skills. The next event for the club will be OPEN STUDIO 2015 (page 5). The glaze room is finished and Geoff Gosman has delivered his special spray booth. We will now begin to sort out our glaze materials and make up new glazes. Unfortunately no club members contacted us to volunteer to help shift materials and clean up the clubhouse, so the committee have decided to postpone the clean up to next month hoping we can get some more helpers, please contact Lone ( 40537508). Any help would be appreciated. Page 3

Thanks to all the club members who helped set up and take down the display at the show and those who found time to be on the roster. Hundreds of people came and had a look at the display, so it was a good way to promote ceramics. OPEN STUDIO 2015 Unearth your local potters On Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th August, hundreds of potters and ceramic artists across Australia will open their studios to the public for a weekend of clay, creativity and community. We also plan to open the Cairns Potters Club s doors to the public over that weekend between 10am and 4 pm. We are inviting members of the public and tourists to have a go at wheel throwing or hand building, look at our facilities and buy pots. On the Saturday they may also be able to participate in a Raku firing. Also opening up studios are : Frantik Designs 33 Kiernan St Manunda and Bundarra Pottery 145 Atherton Road Malanda. If you want to display and sell some of your pots during that weekend, please let us know, as we will reserve one table for you. You do not need to be present all the time over that weekend, however you need to be part of the roster. As usual we need you to provide us with a sales sheet with all items for sale and stickers on the artworks with initials, number and price. We take 20% commission on sales.. We also need helpers to show people around - for the sales table and to help budding potters to handbuild or work on the wheel. Any potters interested in participating please contact Lone on 40537508 or email lone@tpg.com.au. We need plenty of helpers. On the Saturday we will also be having a Raku firing, so if you are interested in participating in the firing bring bisque works suitable for Raku firing (fast firing up to approx 1000 degrees C in half an hour), you may also be able to buy a bisque pot at the club on the day. We will provide Raku glazes for you to apply to the pots, however if you have some exciting raku glazes yourself, please bring them as well. Wednesday 12 August from 12 noon we will be reconstituting the club s Raku glazes and make up more glazes, so if you have time to help or want to learn how to make up glazes, please call in at the clubhouse during the afternoon. BeLonging: embodied commentaries inspired by place was an exhibition of works by over 140 members of the Australian Ceramics Association displayed at the National Ceramic conference in Canberra in July 2015. (Have a look at the Australian ceramics website, where all the pots are displayed individually). All the works ranged from sculptural and functional to conceptual; some were handbuilt, others wheelthrown and many were experimenting with new technologies. The size of the works had been limited to no larger than 15cms in any dimension. Two of our members were part of the exhibition Annette Tranter and Lone White. Page 5

REPORT FROM WORKSHOP LETTING GO a one day workshop with Adil Writer -potter/painter & architect from Mandala pottery in Auroville India.(19 July 2015). The title was very appropriate, as Adil certainly did things with clay we had not seen before and broke many of the rules, we were taught while studying ceramics. The workshop was well attended with 17 participants. Reports back about the workshop by participants have been, that they enjoyed the workshop very much and some have already tried to use some of Adil s techniques. Our member Susan Reys participated in a glaze firing with Adil and sold straight after the firing at the CIAF Fair 4 pieces inspired by his method of stretching clay and using sodium silicate.
