Monogramming can be a beautiful way to express yourself. Nancy Fielder walks you through how to make a unique and graceful monogram for a pillow. This makes a great gift for weddings, housewarmings, baby showers, and even a gift for yourself! Final pattern may need to be adjusted to fi t your hoop.

Al Fresco Monogram Pillow Instructions The font used in this exercise, Parchment Regular, was downloaded from www.azfonts.net. Creating the Reverse Applique Monogram At the Computer 1. Open Digitizer MBX Easy Design. 2. Switch to Graphic Mode > Vector Lettering > Font, Parchment > Size 200pt 3. Click on window to activate cursor. Type desired letter, click Select. 4. Click the padlock to lock the ratio and type 8.5 inches in the height box. Note: Some letters may become too wide. Click the padlock to unlock and use the sizing nodes to change the width. 5. Arrange > Align and Distribute > Center to Page > Switch to Embroidery mode 6. Select GR Hoop. 7. Click the Cutwork tab or Show Cutwork bar to view the Cutwork Applications. 8. Select Application H1. 9. Click Cutwork tool to activate. 10. Use right and left clicks outline the desired object. Press Enter on the keyboard to create the object.

11. Create all the cutwork objects. 12. Use Turning Angle Satin Fill tool to create the objects of the fl ourish. 13. To fi ne tune the fl ourishes. Select the object > Reshape tool 14. Move the nodes to the desired positions. 15. The cutwork objects can be combined so that the cutting needles only need to be changed one time each. Edit > select the cutwork objects > Combine Selected(objects) 16. Save As *.jan and then write to External Media. Note: Cutwork designs cannot be edited in the machine. All changes must be done in DigitizerMBX. 17. File > Print Preview. The design worksheet indicates the cutting needles. Note: The Memory Craft 15000 recognizes the cutwork lines. The machine will automatically disengage the thread sensor and the screen will indicate which cutting needle to insert. For all other Janome Embroidery machines, print a Design Worksheet in Digitizer MBX to view the order of the cutting needles.

Creating Buttonhole in the Hoop 1. File > New > FA Hoop 2. Cutwork Bar> H1 3. Cutwork tool. 4. Left click at 4 corners then press Enter on the keyboard to create a small rectangle. Tip: Hold the Control key on the keyboard while left clicking to create straight lines. 5. Select > Object Properties > Dimensions > Width 1.25in. > OK 6. Use the shaping nodes to bring the inside edges of the satin stitches just touching. 7. Move the buttonhole to the center of the hoop. 8. Embroidery Gallery > Ornam3 > OK 9. Left click two times to create the object > press ESC on the keyboard. Select the object. 10. Rotate, resize, and move to place it on the right hand side of the buttonhole. 11. Copy, paste and fl ip the new object and place it on the left hand side of the buttonhole. 12. Save As *.jan and Write to External Media.

Creating the Monogram Pillow Fabric preparation 1. Cut fabric:17 silk square (front) Two 17 x 12 silk (back) Four 3 x 24 silk bias strips (piping) 2. Following manufacturer s directions fuse stabilizer to wrong side of 17 silk square. Embroidery 1. Set machine for embroidery. 2. Center stabilized fabric in GR Hoop. 3. Open monogram design, attach hoop to machine and start. 4. The Memory Craft 15000 will indicate when to insert each cutting blade. 5. Carefully remove cut fabric. 6. Use temporary spray adhesive to adhere contrast color fabric to the back of hooped fabric. 7. Reattach hoop to machine and complete embroidery. 8. Remove hoop from machine, do not remove fabric from hoop. 9. Touch Home > Designs > Home Décor category > page 3 design #6 (oval frame).

10. Use temporary spray adhesive to adhere batting to wrong side of hooped fabric. 11. Reattach hoop to machine and embroider oval frame. Quilting 1. Set machine for Ordinary Sewing > Sewing Applications > Quilting > Free Quilting > Straight Stitch 2. Attach QC/QO foot. 2. Quilt area outside of frame. Double Piping 1. Sew bias strips together to create one continuous strip. 2. Sewing Applications > Foot Option > Piping > Make. Attach the Piping Foot. 3. Fold bias strip around the cotton cording and sew. 4. Attach Adjustable Narrow Base Zipper foot. 5. Place cotton cording tightly against fi rst row and sew. 6. Trim seam allowance to ¼. Couching Beads 1. Sewing Applications > Foot Option > Beading > Wide. Attach Beading Foot Wide.

2. Thread machine with monofi lament thread. 3. Place the beads on the seam between two rows of piping and sew at a slow speed. 4. Couch beads along the outside edge of the oval frame. Tip: To hide tails, leave a 4 tail at beginning and end. Use pliers to break beads on tails, and then use a large eyed needle to pull tails to back and tie a square knot to hold. Pillow Back 1. Fuse Jenny Haskins Sheer Magic to wrong side of both pillow back pieces. 2. Make a double 1 ½ hem on one 16 side of each pillow back piece. 3. Make 3 buttonholes evenly spaced on hem of one pillow back. Tip: Digitize a decorative buttonhole using Cutwork function and use FA hoop to make perfect buttonholes. 4. Set ClothGuide at 1 ½, select Decorative Stitch #123. Attach Satin Stitch foot F. 5. Place a piece of tear away stabilizer on the wrong side of each pillow back. 6. Place the hemmed edge along ClothGuide and sew. 7. Select Decorative Stitch #97, attach Border Guide foot. 8. Sew vertical rows of decorative stitches evenly spaced across width of each back. 9. Place pillow backs together overlapping hems to form a square back and baste together.

Construction 1. Square pillow top and back to 16 ½. 2. Use Narrow Base Adjustable Zipper foot to sew piping to pillow top. Sew back to the front right sides together. 3. Turn right side out, attach buttons and insert pillow form.
