For xampl, Intl VRE spcification calls for a total of +/- mv including initial tolranc, load rgulation and to 3.A load stp. Th APE85 is spcifically dsignd to mt th fast currnt transint nds as wll as providing an accurat initial voltag, rducing th ovrall systm cost with th nd for fwr output capacitors. Output Voltag Stting Th APE85 can b programmd to any voltags in th rang of.v to -.4V with th addition of R and R xtrnal rsistors according to th following formula: = Vrf (+ R/R) +Iadj *R, whr Vrf =.5 typically, Iadj = 55uA typically R&R as shown at blow APE85 Vrf R Iadj=55uA R Th APE85 kps a constant.5v btwn th output pin and th adjust pin. By placing a rsistor R across ths two pins a constant currnt flows through R, adding to th Iadj currnt and into th R rsistor producing a voltag qual to th (.5/R)*R+Iadj*R which will b addd to th.5v to st th output voltag. This is summarizd in th abov quation. Sinc th minimum load currnt rquirmnt of th APE85 is ma, R is typically slctd to b Ω rsistor so that it automatically satisfis th minimum currnt rquirmnt. Notic that sinc Iadj is typically in th rang of 55uA it only adds a small rror to th output voltag and should only b considrd whn a vry prcis output voltag stting is rquird. For xampl, in a typical 3.3V application whr R=Ω and R=Ω th rror du to Iadj is only.3% of th nominal st point. Load Rgulation Sinc th APE85 is only a 3-trminal dvic, it is not possibl to provid tru rmot snsing of th output voltag at th load. Th bst load rgulation is achivd whn th bottom sid of R is connctd to th load and th top-sid of R rsistor is connctd dirctly to th cas or th pin of th rgulator and not to th load. It is important to not that for high currnt applications, this can rprsnt a significant prcntag of th ovrall load rgulation and on must kp th path from th rgulator to th load as short as possibl to minimiz this ffct. Stability Th APE85 rquirs th us of an output capacitor as part of th frquncy compnsation in ordr to mak th rgulator stabl. For most applications an aluminum lctrolytic capacitor of at last µf nsurs both stability and good transint rspons. Thrmal Dsign Th APE85 incorporats an intrnal thrmal shutdown that protcts th dvic whn th junction tmpratur xcds th maximum allowabl junction tmpratur. Although this dvic can oprat with junction tmpraturs in th rang of 5 o C, it is rcommndd that th slctd hat sink b chosn such that during maximum continuous load opration th junction tmpratur is kpt blow this tmpratur.
