Making the Center Block 1. Refer to the Block Center diagram. Sew a 2" x 32" abric strip to opposite sides of a 32" abric B square. Sew a 2" x 62" abric strip to the top and bottom. Sew abric B 44" quarter-square triangles to adjacent sides of a abric 2d" square as shown. Make 4 units like this. Sew units to sides of the center square. The square should measure 9" from edge to edge. Set center aside. 2. Use your favorite method to make half-square triangles (HST) that finish 3" square, or follow these directions. raw a diagonal line on the wrong side of 4 abric 3f" squares (iagram 2). Place a marked square on a abric C square, right sides together. Sew 4" seam on each side of the marked line; cut apart on the marked line. Press open to make pieced HST. The square should measure 32" from edge to edge. Make 8 total HST. 3. Place a abric 2" square on one corner of a abric 32" square. Sew on the diagonal as indicated by the dotted line (iagram 3). corner as shown by the solid line. Make 4. 4. Sew abric and abric 44" quarter-square triangles together as shown (iagram 4). Make 2 of each diagram. 5. Arrange 2 HST from Step 2, a unit from Step 3, 2 abric 44" triangles, and a abric 3f" triangle as shown (iagram 5A). Sew together. Make 2. Sew to opposite sides of the center square from Step 1 as shown in the Center Block (iagram 6). 6. Arrange units from Steps 2-4 and a abric 3f" triangle as shown (iagram 5B). Sew together. Make 2. Sew to the remaining sides of the center square from Step 1. 7. Sew abric E 152" strips to opposite sides of block. Sew 182" strips to the top and bottom to make the Center Block (iagram 6). Making the eathered Star Units and Corner Units 8. To prepare the star points, place 2 abric 22" x 5 3 /16" rectangles right sides together. Position a 45-degree ruler at the right end of the rectangles and cut along the angled edge of the ruler as shown with the dotted line (iagram 7). Rotate the rectangles and cut the other end in the same manner. The patches should look like the ones shown. Repeat this process for all abric rectangles to make 8 star points. 9. Refer to the eathered Star Unit (iagram 8) for these steps. The star points are pieced in units. Since the outer edges of some pieced units are on the bias, be careful when sewing and pressing. Sew 4 abric and 3 abric C 2f" triangles together into a vertical row for the left side, paying attention to the orientation of the triangles. Sew this row to a abric E 6f" triangle to make Unit 1A. Repeat to make Unit 1B for the right side, again noting orientation of the triangles. 10. To make Unit 2A, join 7 abric 34" quarter-square triangles with 6 abric C triangles in a row. Add the abric star point from Step 8 to the end as shown. Repeat these steps to make Unit 2B, noting orientation of the triangles. Add a abric 34" quarter-square triangle to the top end of the 2B row as shown. 11. Sew Unit 2A to Unit 1A. This completes Unit A. Repeat to make Unit B. Hint: If any of the units are a bit large, re-sew as many seams as needed with a seam that is 1-2 threads larger than a 4" seam. 12. To make Unit C, sew a abric 114" triangle to the bottom side of a abric A 68" square as shown. abric triangle even with edge of the square (iagram 9). Sew another abric triangle to adjacent side as shown. Make 4 Unit C. Note: The eathered Star Unit diagram shows the section for the bottom of the quilt. Each unit will have the abric A square rotated in a different position as shown in the quilt photograph. 13. Sew Unit A to Unit C (iagram 8). Press seam to Unit C. Sew Unit B to Unit C. Press seam to Unit C. 14. Repeat steps 9 13 to make a total of 4 eathered Star Units. 15. To make the Corner Units, sew a abric 42" x 62" rectangle to one side of a abric A 62" square as shown. Sew a abric 42" x 102" rectangle to the adjacent side. Make 1 of each unit, positioning the rectangles as shown in iagram 10 so that ownton Abbey motif is upright when the sections are stitched into the quilt. 2f" C Unit 1A E 6f" Unit 2A eathered Star Unit Make 4 iagram 8 114" 68" A 42" x 102" 34" Unit C 42" x 62" A 62" Unit 2B Unit 1B Unit C Make 4 iagram 9 Unit B Page 4 of 7 ree Pattern ownload Available at www.andoverfabrics.com 9/24/13
Quilt Assembly 16. Refer to the Quilt Assembly iagram for these steps. Arrange and sew the Center block, the eathered Star Units, and the Corner Units into 3 horizontal rows. Sew rows together. 17. Sew abric 382" borders to opposite sides of the quilt. Sew 402" borders to the top and bottom of the quilt. Piecing the 6" Outer Border 18. Sew abric B 2f" half-square triangles to short edges of abric 54" quarter-square triangles to make 20 flying geese units as shown (iagram 11). Repeat to make 20 flying geese in each combination: abrics C and, abrics B and, and abrics C and. 19. Join pairs of 2f" triangles to make squares in these fabric combinations: abrics C and, abrics B and, and abrics C and (iagram 12). Make the number of squares as shown. 20. Arrange flying geese units and squares from Step 19 in the order shown to make 2 horizontal rows (iagram 13). Look carefully at the diagrams and turn the flying geese units and squares in the correct orientation. ouble check before you sew units together into 2 rows. Join the 2 rows to make a side border. Repeat to make 2. Sew side borders to quilt center with abric patches next to quilt. 21. Join units to make top and bottom borders (iagram 14), again noting orientation of units. Sew to the quilt. 22. Join 11 abric and 12 abric 54" quarter-square triangles (iagram 15). Sew a abric 2f" triangle at each end. Make 4 outer borders like this. Sew 2 borders to opposite sides of the quilt with the red triangles touching the quilt. Sew an additional abric 2f" triangle to each end of the remaining outer borders as shown in the Quilt Assembly iagram. Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt. inishing the Quilt 23.
