ONE-DAY CAMPS - 2015 Convenient for busy summer schedules, these camps provide unique experiences possible only at Meijer s and packed into a single day. They are a great way to try new learning adventures, from hiking to woodlands and waterfalls to making sculptures out of colorful vegetables to investigating the Japanese. Tuesday, June 9 (Ages 4 5 with Adult) 10 11:30 am OR 2 3:30 pm GRANDMA AND ME: PLANT PALS FEE: $35 member pairs, $40 non-member pairs Hunt for plants used to make gum, chocolate, baskets, flooring and musical instruments. Make an edible sculpture out of colorful vegetables. Then take home a tomato plant in your own decorated pot and tend to it all summer long. Monday, July 27 OR Wednesday, July 29 (Ages 6 9) 9 am 2 pm EXPLORE THE JAPANESE GARDEN NEW! FEE: $50 members, $57 non-members Enjoy a full day of learning about the Japanese! Walk along winding paths and observe rocks, waterfalls, sculpture, bridges and learn their significance. Back in the classroom, learn about Japanese culture. Make and sample Udon noodles, create a mini-zen garden in a box to take home and paint a scroll with brush and ink. Please bring a lunch and a water bottle. Incorporates Japanese Content My child had a wonderful time. The teacher allowed her to experiment with her creativity. Monday, July 27 OR Wednesday, July 29 (Ages 10 14) 9 am 2 pm INVESTIGATE THE JAPANESE GARDEN NEW! FEE: $50 members, $57 non-members Start the day with a visual scavenger hunt to look for unique features in the Japanese a 20,000 pound boulder, a zigzag bridge, a sculpture that turns your reflection upside down, cascading waterfalls and a tree that looks like it has clouds. Then head back to the classroom to create a mini-garden with Japanese influence, work on wiring a demonstration bonsai tree with a bonsai artist, try your hand at calligraphy and watercolor and make a small bamboo easel to display your creations. Please bring a lunch and a water bottle. Wednesday, (Ages 5 10) 10 am 12 pm OR 1 3 pm PLENTY OF ART FEE: $25 members, $32 non-members Squeeze in more summer fun! Work on a variety of engrossing 2-D and 3-D projects focusing on color and pattern. Experiment with clay, paint, glass gems and other unusual materials.
FOUR-DAY CAMPS - 2015 These Monday through Thursday camps offer a wonderful variety of activities all focused on a single theme. They give campers the chance to get to know Meijer s inside and out and to dig deeper into areas of interest, from insects to cooking to rocks and fossils. June 15 18 OR July 6 9 (Ages 4 5) SILLY SCULPTURE Play silly games and take wacky walks through the gardens. Create new sculptures every day using plaster, clay, recycled products and more. June 15 18 (Ages 6 7) AMAZING ANIMALS Explore animal habitats to look for beavers, turtles, snakes, mink and more. Compare animal features and create a dazzling artwork each day from a colorful windsock fish to fun stick mammals. The projects for this camp were just the right balance of challenging and fun. Incorporates Japanese Content June 15 18 (Ages 8 9) ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN Use your imagination and a variety of materials such as cardboard, wood, clay, stones, wire and paper to create a house, bridge, sculpture and public building. Work together to create a mini-city with landscaping and roads. June 15 18 (Ages 10 14) OUTDOOR WATERCOLOR Enjoy the hills, waterfalls, shady paths and colorful gardens as perfect spots for painting. Learn about brushwork, layering colors and creating the illusion of depth to paint what you see. A kid-friendly camp for serious young artists. June 22 25 OR August 3 6 (Ages 4 5) CREATURE FEATURE Get to know the animals at Meijer s turtles, frogs, birds and horses. Take mini-walks, listen to stories, play games and create unique art projects using colored clay, tissue paper and paint.
FOUR-DAY CAMPS - 2015 July 13 16 (Ages 4 5) HAPPY FEET Have fun with dance games, dance stories, creative movement, art projects, and learn about sculptures. Practice stretching, tapping rhythms and learning dance positions. Invite your family in for a one-of-a-kind performance. July 13 16 (Ages 6 7) EXPLORE THE GREAT LAKES Design, construct and test foil boats, found object boats and kid catamarans. Examine water creatures using microscopes and dissect water plants. July 13 16 (Ages 8 9) DYNAMITE DRAWING Sharpen your drawing skills as you sketch a live animal, landscapes and sculptures, still-life arrangements and each other. Use pencil, charcoal, colored pencils and ink to create a finished work of art each day. July 20 23 (Ages 4 5) JEEPERS CREEPERS Learn about weird and wonderful insects through activities such as Ladybug Munch, Praying Mantis Snatch, Flea Jump and Flyswatter Relay. Examine the insect zoo and make a honeybee from clay and a butterfly from jigsaw puzzle pieces. July 20 23 (Ages 6 7) CLAY EVERY DAY Explore Meijer s for unusual clay connections. Then use clay tools to make sculptures from chocolate clay, scented clay, sand clay and sparkly clay. July 20 23 (Ages 8 9) 2-D AND 3-D ART NEW! Paint a landscape with oil pastels. Design, etch into foam, roll ink with brayers and learn how to pull a print. Make a mask from plaster and build and balance a wooden sculpture. July 27 30 (Ages 4 5) LITTLE DIGGERS Dig in a vegetable patch, pot a plant, pick a vegetable and look at soil with magnifying glasses. Draw an imaginary garden and participate in games, stories and a colorful seed project. August 3 6 (Ages 6 7) ROCKS AND FOSSILS Learn about sedimentary rocks using graham crackers and chocolate chips. Experiment with sculpture tools on a piece of alabaster, explore rock hardness and magnetism and start a rock collection that rocks! August 3 6 (Ages 10 12) FRENCH CULTURE AND COOKING I FEE: $90 members, $97 non-members Develop your cooking skills as you learn about French sculptors, French words and French culture. Make delicious French dishes and sample all your delicacies. August 10 13 (Ages 4 5) BUCKETS OF PAINT! NEW! Follow paths, bridges and hills to see patterns, textures and colors. Then use this inspiration to create a fun paint project every day. Build sculptures out of wood and embellish with paint, use tempera on plexiglass to make jazzy prints, paint patterns on textured paper and use scented finger paint to grow flowers. August 10 13 (Ages 6 7) EVERYDAY EXPLORERS Investigate woods, wetlands and meadows with your own explorer kit and learn to identify birds, bugs and intriguing plants. Create fun, nature-inspired artworks every day! August 10 13 (Ages 12 14) FRENCH CULTURE AND COOKING II NEW!
