Raltron Products for IEEE-1588 Applications Raltron has been working with a number of customers on the PTP IEEE-1588 applications since the first release in 2002. The updated IEEE-1588-2008 version opened more applications, specifically in the telecommunication segment, while making oscillator requirements more challenging and stringent. Raltron recognized new opportunities and optimized oscillators to meet a new set of requirements such as: Better frequency stability and accuracy Lower power Improved medium and long term stability Smallest footprint Low jitter and phase noise Reduced cost Raltron products for IEEE-1588 applications include: Low jitter XO Stratum 3 TCXO and VTCXO Small footprint TCXO Small footprint OCXO Stratum 3E OCXO Double OCXO GPS Disciplined Oscillator
Oscillator Requirements for IEEE-1588 The oscillator performance in combination with the period of synchronization messages, servo control, and PDV filtering algorithm has a major influence on the accuracy of the PTP IEEE-1588 overall system. Network topology and PTP clock hierarchy also play critical role in local node oscillator selection. PTP IEEE-1588 is used in different applications : Test and measurement Industrial automation Medical industry Power industry Aerospace, navigation, and positioning Audio and video networks Telecommunications Each applications in Packet Networks must meet specific synchronization requirements and in some cases relevant industry standards. Each of the applications have very different oscillator requirements. Product designers must find a balance between the desired performance and the cost of the oscillator.
Oscillator Requirements for IEEE-1588 Cont. Generally, for any IEEE-1588 applications key oscillator parameters are: Standard frequency stability (Frequency vs. Temperature and Aging). Phase Noise and Jitter Short and Medium term stability (ADEV or MTIE/TDEV). In some less synchronization constrained IEEE-1588 applications the standard Ethernet type XO with ±20ppm frequency stability is good enough. More synchronization constrained IEEE-1588 applications such as Telecom, Audio and video networks require oscillators that meet specific short and medium term stability. Telecommunication wire line applications requirements are defined by industry synchronization standards such as: Telcordia GR-1244, GR-253, ITU-T G.812/G.813, ITU-T G.8261/G.826 Telecommunication wireless applications requirements are defined by system requirements such as: LTE frequency accuracy 50ppb, time accuracy 3-10µs WiMAX frequency accuracy 50ppb, time accuracy 5-25µs Audio and Video have to conform with IEEE 802.1AS-2011
