Optical System High Speed 2 mega-pixel CCD Camera Flow rate 30 litres per minute 10x lens magnification gives an image region of 650 x 494um Minimum object diameter 1 μm System is backlit with high power LED to insure the maximum contrast and providing a long life light system in comparison to halogen Maximum object diameter 494 μm System will auto adjust exposure time in respect to the turbidity of the water

What is Video Microscopy A digital camera with a magnification lens is used to capture an image The image is then processed to find objects of interest such as oil droplets, solids and gas in water Raw Image Processed Image

Objects in Focus In order to get a accurate measurement of the PPM only those objects that are in focus are measured Thus every object that is found is assess to see if it is in focus A combination of the sharpness at the edge of the object, the objects variation in contrast is used to measure if the particle is out of focus Object Out of Focus

Gas Due to the system being backlit, gas in the chamber can be distinguished from oil droplets if the object centre is of a lower contrast than its edges The ratio of this contrast can be adjusted in order to optimise for the detection of Gas Gas Particle

Oil or Solids To distinguished between oil droplets and solids the shape is measured The shape factor is a ratio of the area of the object too perimeter around the object Oil Solid

Measuring PPM The PPM of image is measured by adding the area of all the oil droplets in the image and dividing it by the size of the image. This is then calibrated against a 4 parameter curve. Low PPM High PPM

Measuring Turbidity The first sign of an upset in producing clean water may be a change in the darkness of the water (turbidity). Microscopy system reports the level of turbidity in a simple traffic colour display in the software If the turbidity is high, colour red in the software then an alarm is sent via a 4-20mA connection
