Dear Summer Staff, Welcome to the team I am thrilled you have chosen to be the hands and feet of Christ this summer in such a unique way! We cannot wait to see all of the ways God uses each one of you to move students, empower communities, and take drastic steps in your own faith. I want to encourage each of you in the great task you ve taken on this summer. Not only have you signed up for a summer serving in missions, but you ve also stepped out in faith financially. Raising funds can be intimidating if you are not sure how to go about it. Which is why we have created this packet. Our goal is to help you raise support from start to finish. We have offered helpful advice (tried and true), sample support letters, as well as a useful timeline. Our hope is that this packet can offer you peace in the process of raising funds, and get you off to a great start. In addition to this packet, I am here as a resource for you. As a former Summer Staff member I have experienced a summer with Next Step and would love to answer any questions and offer any advice. Please don t hesitate to reach out to me. Blessings, Jeremy Singer Jeremy Singer Internship Director

Internship Support Raising Facts Due June 1 st, 2017: $2,500.00 All Checks Payable to: Next Step Ministries All Payments Sent to: Next Step Ministries 2935 S Fish Hatchery Rd. Suite 421 Madison, WI 53711 The donor must include your name on the memo line. We will not send receipts to donors. Important: If you are unable to raise the total amount of your support, the remaining amount due will be subtracted from your paycheck at the end of the summer.

Where to Start An Easy Approach to Raising Support We ve been there, right where you are, in need of financial support. We know what it is like to step out in faith and trust in God to provide the donors and finances you need to make your summer a reality. If you have never raised support for ministry before, it can be a bit unclear as to what the task at hand entails. Raising support is a common model used by most missionaries and churches, and serves as an opportunity for others to join in your cause. You are simply asking them to partner with you in ministry this summer. The support you raise goes directly to: your lodging and travel, the construction projects you will be leading in a community, and the trips students will participate in. So don t be afraid if someone says no. Simply tell of the journey you are about to begin and the role you will play in the lives of those around you, inviting others into that same journey.

Three Ways to Work it! #1 Send out Letters We ve enclosed a site-specific support-raising letter for you to use as a sample. Be sure to share the passion and heart behind your decision to serve this summer. Although it is important to share about Next Step and the community you will be serving with, people will be drawn into this journey through your passion. We encourage you to personalize the support letter we have provided and weave in your personal story. Send this letter to as many people as you can think of. Family, friends, old friends of your parents you name it. Don t hesitate to tap into your mom s phone book for this one. She probably has an entirely separate list filled with family friends who are eager to know what you re up to. Follow Up. Don t be afraid to follow up with those you send a letter to. A phone call two weeks after you have sent your letter, is perfectly acceptable. **We Strongly recommend sending out your support letters by February 15 th.

Three Ways to Work it! #2 Create an Online Support Page We have created a way for you to raise support online. You can post your fundraising page to various social media sites, as well as emailing it to friends and family. This is an incredible way to get the word out about your summer. It s very simple and easy to set up your page. Simply follow the directions below: 1. Go to your sites URL: Haiti Guatemala Alaska Ohio Los Angeles Milwaukee New Mexico South Dakota Texas Joplin New York West Virginia South Carolina Oklahoma Colorado Madison www.classy.org/teamhaiti2017 www.classy.org/teamguatemala2017 www.classy.org/teamalaska2017 www.classy.org/teamohio2017 www.classy.org/teamlosangeles2017 www.classy.org/teammilwaukee2017 www.classy.org/teamnewmexico2017 www.classy.org/teamsouthdakota2017 www.classy.org/teamtexas2017 www.classy.org/teamjoplin2017 www.classy.org/teamnewyork2017 www.classy.org/teamwestvirginia2017 www.classy.org/teamsouthcarolina2017 www.classy.org/teamoklahoma2017 www.classy.org/teamcolorado2017 www.classy.org/teammadison2017 2. Click on the yellow Become A Fundraiser button. 3. Fill out the information. a. For Title use your name and position: Jeremy Singer, Team Leader b. Your Fundraising Goal is $2,500.00 c. Create a customized URL that s easy to remember such as: www.stayclassy.org/jeremyinsouthdakota d. Save and Finish 4. Your page will be created. You can now edit the page and add any personalized information. (The edit button is in the gray bar under the Donate Now section). a. Add your photo and any additional videos from our website that you want. I have created a brief description of what s happening in the community you are serving with, but please feel free to write your personal story here! Whatever you think would encourage people to donate. 5. Share your page. a. Share your page on Facebook, Twitter, and through email. b. We recommend sharing your URL on your support letters. c. You can track your support raising on your own! **We strongly recommend creating your StayClassy page by February 1 st.

Three Ways to Work it! #3 Creatively Use Your Gifts to Raise Money There are many other ways to raise support, so don t stop here! We encourage you to use the gifts you have been given to raise the necessary support beyond sending out letters and creating an online support-raising page. Here are a few ideas: Organize a Benefit Concert. If you are a musician, use your gifts to draw people in for a time of fellowship. Put on a concert, and share about the opportunity you have in the upcoming months. Set up a booth at your church. Many times, churches are willing to let you share about your upcoming summer at the end of a service. Ask if you can share for five minutes, and collect a separate offering. Set up a booth and be available to talk with people after the service. Ask if the church will put an announcement in the bulletin, or post your StayClassy page on their Facebook. Host a Bake Sale. Who doesn t like cakes, pies, and cookies? Ask for friends and family to donate baked goods for you to sell at your school, church, etc. Apparent Project. Another cool option is an opportunity to partner with an organization in Haiti. In a basic sense, they send you bracelets made from local individuals for you to sell at $8 - $10 a piece. You send $5/per bracelet back to the organization to meet needs for families in Haiti, while keeping about $5 for yourself. See the below website for more information. We've seen it work well to sell this around Christmas time for gifts, or simply selling them at a booth at your church or school. This provides the opportunity to tell your story for the summer, and the story of Apparent Project. http://www.apparentproject.org/fundraisers/4572681975

People Might Ask Why do Next Step Internships require Support Raising? Next Step is committed to funding projects that really make a difference. These projects take significant money. When you commit to serving alongside a community with Next Step, you commit to making it possible to do the building that is truly effective. Every year, Next Step Summer Staff raise over $150,000.00, allowing us to do the work we do! It has been a staple of our ministry since the beginning, a staple that makes us different, and a staple that makes us effective. So be humbled knowing the money you raise doesn t just go in your pocket, but goes to rebuilding and empowering a community you have now become a part of. Where does the Support Raising go? The money you raise goes to a few different places. Part of it funds your stay in the community covering your transportation, lodging, and food for the summer. But the majority of your support goes directly to the construction materials used in the community you are serving. So, you can confidently share that the money your donors give, is going directly to homes you will personally be leading projects for. What happens if I don t raise enough support? If you are unable to raise the full amount, the difference will be subtracted from your paycheck at the end of the summer. What if I raise over the amount required? If you raise over the $2,500.00 requirement, the money will continue to go towards the community you will be working with. Because the money is donated with the understanding that it will be used in the communities, we cannot return it. Please monitor your balance often so you know when you are approaching your goal. On the other hand, you will quickly fall in love with the community you serve in and see the value of where this money is being used. If you have a great support system that is able to provide above and beyond, it will be a huge blessing. Can people continue to donate throughout the summer? Yes! If donors wish to give during the summer they are more than welcome to. We do however ask for your $2,500.00 to be turned in by June 1 st in order for us to distribute the money into the community you are serving with. Are the donations tax deductible? Yes. Because Next Step Ministries is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, any money donated is tax deductible. Our Tax ID # 26-1110499.

How to Make It Work Be Prayerful Pray daily for God to lead the way and make your ministry possible this summer. Ask Him to break down the walls that are built up against your mission. Remember that the summer is not about you or Next Step; it is about Christ. Be Proactive God will do His part, now you have to do your part. Make a list of contacts you can mail out letters to. Make a list of those whom you think will donate online. Check off the names on the list. Make sure to follow through. Use both the letter method and the online method. Invest in a method beyond these two options. People are busy and often forgetful, so do not be afraid to follow up and ask if they ve had any time to consider supporting you. Be Prepared Be confident and know what you re talking about. Familiarize yourself with Next Step s mission and know the community well. Make sure you are well equipped to answer questions that may come up. Be sure to read through the People Might Ask section for all the answers you will need. Be Present Put aside time to work on your support raising efforts. Set aside a morning or afternoon for making phone calls. If you make yourself present and available for a day or two, you will be grateful in the end. The sooner you get your support raised, the more relieved you will be. Be Passionate You are here because God has called you to serve. That in and of itself is truly an exciting thing. I hope you are as excited as we are about the calling God has placed on you this summer. Friends and family will sense your passion and confidence in this call and will be eager to join you in your mission this summer. Be Personal If someone chooses to support you, show him or her your thanks! Send them a personal thank you card and ask them if they want to stay updated with Next Step. If they do, we can add them to our monthly email newsletter. It would also be a good idea to fill them in at the end of the summer with a letter about what you did and how they made it possible. Be Positive We encourage you to remind yourself often of why you are raising support. When thoughts of frustration or defeat begin to take over, it will impact your perspective on the blessing that support raising can truly be. Combat these thoughts with prayer and a positive attitude. Remember that God promises us over and over again in His word that He will provide for us. In this section, I want to remind you of the most important thing: remember the God you are serving.

Many people are called to ministry. Those who step out in faith and follow in obedience all have on thing in common: they trust that God will provide. And God has always provided for them. Always. We serve a very faithful God who promises time and time again in His word that He will provide for us if we simply seek Him. So do not worry, saying what shall we eat? or what shall we drink? or what shall we wear? For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:31-33 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruitfruit that will last- and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. John 16:15 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 Meditate on these promises. We encourage you to seek God with your whole heart and submit to Him. In that, He promises to work all things for your good. Spend time in prayer, making your requests known to God. Use this as an opportunity to grow in your faith and your trust in the Lord. We serve a big and powerful God who can certainly handle providing financial support for you.
