William Albert Graham (1833 1908) William Albert Graham 1 was born April 30 th 1833 2 to John Graham (1810-1883) 3 and Lydia Devor 4 in the area of Blain, in present day Jackson Township, Perry County Pennsylvania. 5 William 1 st married Mary E. Oliver 6 about 1857 in Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Mary was born about 1841 to Fredrick and Catherine Oliver in East Pennsboro, Cumberland County Pennsylvania. By 1860 the Oliver family relocated to the Shippensburg Post Office area of Southampton Township in Cumberland County. i Fredrick was a miller at the McClay s Mill, located in the Newburg area of Hopewell Township. 7 Regarding William s marriages: The name Mary Oliver comes from William s 1908 obituary. 8 The name Mary E. Allewelt comes from the death certificates of two daughters, Annie and Cora. 9 Either there is an error in one of the records, or Mary Oliver died from birthing complications with her 1 st born son, and William remarried prior to 1860 to Mary E. Allewelt in the Shippensburg area, or Mary E. Oliver is her maiden name, and Allewelt is her 1 st married name. ii Either Mary Oliver or Mary Allewelt was born February 8 th 1838. 10 This date came from the death of Mary on August 24 th 1874, age 33 years, 6 months 16 days. 11 In 1860 William and Mary, along with their son William Albert Graham, 12 lived with Fredrick and Catherine Oliver in the Shippensburg post office area of Southampton Township, Franklin County Pennsylvania. William was a day laborer and Franklin Oliver was a miller. I m not sure of the relationship between Franklin Oliver and Mary Oliver-Graham. William and his family lived most of their lives in the town of Shippensburg, where he was a fence maker and copper (barrel maker), and a sexton at the Grace (German) Reformed Church in Shippensburg. On June 13 th 1863 William registered iii with, R.M. Henderson, for Army service while living in Shippensburg Township Cumberland County. At the time of his registration, 13 William was married, and his occupation was identified as a copper. To date, we have found no record indicating William mustered in with any Civil War Army unit. i William s obituary indicated that Mary was the daughter of William McClay, but census records indicate Fredrick. Ralph Fickes (Franklin) McClay was a miller in the Lurgan Township of Franklin County, where he managed the family mill until it closed in 1888. William Oliver of McClay s Mill was located in the Newburg Area of Hopewell Township Cumberland Country Pennsylvania. ii William s children with his wife prior to Mary Stuart Hildebrand-Culbertson: William s 1 st son was born about 1858, and died prior to 1870; his two daughters, Annie and Cora, identified Mary Allewelt as their mother; his son, Harry, in his marriage application, indicated his mother s name was unknown; and in William s obituary his 1 st wife was Mary Oliver. iii William s name was recorded as William Graham, not William A. Graham.

Some researchers have mixed up our William Albert Graham, with his cousin, 14 from his Uncle Robert Graham s family, 15 who is also known as William A. Graham. 16 This William was married to Jennie Burk. 17 By 1870, William and Mary, along with their children Annie, Harry and Cora, were still living in Shippensburg Township area of Shippensburg Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Mary Oliver or Mary Allenwelt iv died August 24 th 1874, age 33 years, 6 months 16 days. 18 I believe that Mary died due to illness or complications with the birth of another child. When Mary died our great grandfather, William Henry Graham, was given to Lenard and Catherine Thrush. v Catherine is the grandmother of Edward Agle. 19 Mary was laid to rest in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Section 4.2 Shippensburg Cumberland County. FAG#131154158 William then married 20 Margaret Stuart 21 Hildebrand-Culbertson 22 in 1876. Mary was born February 17 th 1842 to John Hildebrand 23 in Amberson Valley, Fannett Township Franklin County Pennsylvania. Mary was baptized, along with her daughters, on May 19 th 1888 at the German Reformed Church in Shippensburg by Reverend J. David Miller. 24 Mary Stuart Hildebrand was 1 st married to James B. Culbertson of Fannett Township Franklin County Pennsylvania. 25 Together James B. and Margaret Culbertson had three children. 26 In 1900 William and Mary lived at 232 East Main Street Shippensburg Pennsylvania, and in 1905 they lived on Queen Street. After several weeks of suffering from dysentery, William died at 75 years old Thursday evening, July 30 th 1908 in his home on Fort Street, Shippensburg Cumberland County Pennsylvania. He was laid to rest August 2 nd 1908, 27 in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Section 4.2 Shippensburg Cumberland County. 28 FAG #131154029 vi After William died, Mary and her daughter Clara lived at 340 King Street in the east ward of Shippensburg. In 1920 Mary moved in with her daughter Mary (Florence) Stevick at 3 North Earl Street in the west ward of Shippensburg Pennsylvania. 29 After Florence died in 1921, Mary went to live with her son, William Culbertson, outside of Shippensburg in Mongul Southampton Township Franklin County Pennsylvania. While living there Mary died from the effects of a stroke and paralysis on February 3 rd 1921. 30 She was laid to rest February 5 th 1921 31 next to William in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Section 4.2 Shippensburg Cumberland County. 32 FAG#131154297 vii iv The name Abelwalt has been derived from the death certificates of two daughters, Annie Angle (Allewett) and Cora Geistwhite (Allewelt). v Catherine Thrush is most likely her married name, which suggests she remarried after the death of Edward s paternal or maternal grandfather: Catherine Agle or Catherine Waltrick. vi Find-A-Grave, FAG, is a web site for cemetery memorials, http://www.findagrave.com vii Find-A-Grave, FAG, is a web site for cemetery memorials, http://www.findagrave.com

He was wounded at Atlanta, Georgia, on August 5 th 1864, and transferred to Company B on April 12 th 1865.

Catherine was identified as a mother of 21 children, and none still living in 1900, and she was identified as being a grandmother of either Edward or Annie. Annie s paternal grandmother was Lydia Devore-Graham. If Catherine is Annie s maternal grandmother, she would be Catherine Oliver who 1 st married William Oliver, and then married a 2 nd husband; Lenard Thrush. If Catherine is Edward s paternal grandmother, she would be Catherine (unknown last name or Thrush) who married Agle. If Catherine is Edward s maternal grandmother, it would be Catherine Waltrick, whose daughter Regina married Edward s father Jacob Agle. Catherine may be her mother before she remarried to Lenard Thrush. 20 A few researchers indicated William first married Mary Culbertson-Hilderbrand, and second to Mary Elizabeth Ablewalt in 1875. These marriages are in the wrong order. The name of Abelwalt must have been derived from the death certificates of two daughters, Annie Angle (Allewett) and Cora Geistwhite (Allewelt). Then there is William s 1908 obituary, which indicated he was fist married to Mary Oliver.

21 Margaret Stuart Hildebrand Middle Name: The middle name came from her son, William Culbertson s Obituary: The Shippensburg Chronicle, Tuesday, August 24 th 1944, Shippensburg Historical Society Obituary Collection, Shippensburg Historical Society, 52 West King Street Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, 17257.
