Wuhan University Introduction Wuhan University, a key comprehensive university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, is also among the key construction universities of the National "985 Project" and "211 Project". Wuhan University originated from Self-improvement School, which was founded in 1893 with the approval of the Qing Government by Zhang Zhidong, Governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces in the late Qing Dynasty. After years of evolution, it was denominated as National Wuhan University in 1928, hence one of the first national universities in modern China. By 1946, the university had already developed into a comprehensive university with six disciplines: Liberal arts, Law, Science, Engineering, Agriculture and Medicine. Wuhan University enjoys rolling physical features with scenic Luojia Hill in its campus coverage and the beautiful East Lake by its side, beaming with picturesque glamour. It is honored as "the most beautiful university in China." The university boasts a campus which covers an area of 5,167 mu with s a floorage of 2.56 million square meters. It enjoys a palatial complex characteristic of a combination of Chinese and Western styles, looking splendid and spectacular. Twenty six early buildings are listed as Key National Heritage Conservation Units. Wuhan University is a comprehensive university characteristic of a complete structure of disciplines in 11 categories: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, etc. It has 36 colleges in six faculties: Departments of Humanity Science, Social Science, Natural Science,

Engineering, Information Science and Medical Science, with 114 bachelor's degree programs. Five first-level disciplines are evaluated as national key disciplines, covering 29 second level disciplines. In addition, 17 second-level disciplines are evaluated as national key disciplines; 6 disciplines are national key disciplines (for development). 36 first-level disciplines and 248 second-level disciplines have the authority to confer Ph. D; 317 disciplines have the authority to confer Mater s Degree, and there are 32 post doctoral circulation stations and three affiliated upper first-class hospitals. professionals in all ranks, among which there are 100-odd academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, contributing much to the national construction and social progress. The notable achievements in school-running have won an extensive international prestige for Wuhan University. The university has established relations of academic cooperation and exchange with over 346 universities, colleges and scientific research institutions in more than 40 countries and regions. Wuhan University enjoys a large number of famous scholars and outstanding faculty. The teaching staff of Wuhan University consists of more than 3,600 full-time teachers, including 2,400 professors and associate professors, 4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 academicians of the Eurasian Academy of Sciences, 9 senior professors of arts and social sciences, and 11 chief scientists of the National 973 Project (including National Basic Research Program of China), 4 experts in "863 Project" program, 4 Innovative Research Groups of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 33 Winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars and 12 nationally outstanding teachers. Since 1950s, Wuhan University took a lead in enrolling international students in China. During the time of more than four decades, the university has accepted and trained thousands of international students coming from more than 113 countries and regions. All the students have received systematic training and a substantial part of them have earned Bachelor s, Master s or Doctor s degrees. The university also provides a Bachelor s Degree program only for international students: Chinese Language. College of Foreign Students Education of Wuhan University is an institution for the enrollment and Talents pursue knowledge to reach their prime in Wuhan University. The university is the first to propose the new educational concept of creation, innovation and entrepreneurship that fosters inter-disciplinary talents with solid foundation, wide knowledge, high quality and creative mind. More efforts are been made in searching for a talent training mode that adapts to economic and social development. The university now has 32,640 undergraduates, 13,170 postgraduates and 7,191 doctoral candidates, among which there are 586 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese and 2,300 international students. Since its founding, the university has fostered a total number of 300,000-odd senior
