Speakers Chris Mercer is a former President of both epi and CIPA and was a partner in the firm of Carpmaels & Ransford for many years. He now acts as a consultant to Carpmaels. He has many years of litigation experience and has been an active member of epi s EPPC, in particular working on the rules for the UP. Stefan Luginbuehl completed his law degree at the University of Berne (Switzerland), then worked at a well-established law firm specializing in business law, with offices in Zurich and Berne, and was admitted to the bar in 1999. In 2009 he received a PhD degree from Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Between 1999 and 2004 he worked for the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property where he has represented Switzerland in different bodies of the European Patent Organisation, the World Intellectual Property Organisation and other institutions. He was a member of the drafting team of the European Patent Litigation Agreement (EPLA). This Agreement served to a great extent as basis for the Agreement on a Unified Patent Court (UPC Agreement). Since 2004 he is employed as a lawyer in the European Patent Office where he is inter alia dealing with the developments of the patent system in Europe, with emphasis on the implementation of the unitary patent and the uniform patent litigation system into the existing European patent system, and with patent related developments in Asia, in particular China. He participated in several Diplomatic and Intergovernmental Conferences on the reform of the European patent system and the international litigation system. He is a lecturer in different universities and is the author and editor of several books and articles on patent procedure and patent litigation in Europe and China.
Paul Clarkson (British) has an MA in Engineering from the University of Cambridge and almost 30 years of experience in the field of patents, first as an Examiner at the European Patent Office and subsequently as a UK and European Patent Attorney. Paul spent 10 years with Howrey LLP in London and Amsterdam before joining NLO in 2010, where his work is focussed primarily in the mechanical and electrical fields. He is also qualified as a UK Patent Attorney Litigator. Since 2012, Paul has been a delegate for the Netherlands on the epi Litigation committee, which has been instrumental in negotiating the representation of European Patent Attorneys before the UPC. As one of the many European Patent Attorneys working outside their home countries, Paul is a working example of the free movement of people and services that characterizes the IP profession. He is fluent in Dutch, Spanish, French and German, has a Spanish wife and his children are presently studying in Spain and Germany.
