Appendix C Drawing a Living Room and Family Room Floorplan In this chapter, you will learn the following to World Class standards: Draw a Living Room and Family Room Floorplan Draw the Walls and Stairs Draw the Doors Draw the Windows Draw the Opening to the Living Room Dimension the Floorplan C-1

Draw a Living Room and Family Room Floorplan In this project, we will learn how to draw a living room and family room floorplan. In this Computer Aided Design (CAD) layout, we will also draw a hallway, foyer, and stairway leading to the second floor. As is other projects that we will do, we will add doors and windows. We will start the session with a sketch that has the required dimensions to create the lines in our CAD drawing. We will be using AutoCAD 2011 in this example. Figure C.1 Sketch of the Basement Draw the Walls and Stairs Unlike drawing a single room, when we draw a segment of a home, we might just draw two or three sides of the exterior and then offset the Polyline to show the wall thickness. To begin the basement plan, we open the CAD program and with our architectural template by selecting New and then we choose architectural as shown in Figure C.2. The current layer is set at floorplan so we are ready to draw our walls. Figure C.2 The Architectural Template We begin the floorplan by drawing a Polyline on the floorplan layer. We start the Polyline at the upper left area of the graphical screen and extend it downward 15 feet 4 ½ inches. We type this in the computer as 15 4.5 and Enter. The second leg of the Polyline is 4-4.5 inches to the right. Then, we continue downward 4. After that, we add a 18 1 line segment to the right and return 4 upward. We follow by 10 4.5 to the right and 12 6.75 upward. To end the Polyline, we draw another segment upward 12 inches. We set the offset width to 4.5 inches and offset the Polyline to the inside as shown in figure C.5. Figure C.5 Create the Wall Thickness Many designers have a preference as to how to draw a plan and our choice is to work from left to right. We find that consistency builds speed and accuracy, so we should follow the techniques we learn to help our craft. We will draw the stairway landing by drawing a line 4 upward and perpendicular to the west wall as shown in the figure. Figure C.6 Draw the Stair Landing Next, we will array the horizontal landing line upward. We select the line and we will have a rectangular array that has 1 column and 13 rows. The distance between each step is 11 inches. Figure C.7 Draw the Stair Steps C-4

We will use the Stretch command to narrow the width of the stairs by 4.5 inches on nine steps. We use the crossing selection to identify the lines and we select our first point anywhere on the graphical display. Then we push the nine lines to the left and type 4.5. As a person walks up the stairs, the wall that contains the hallway is to the right. Figure C.8 Reduce Some of the Stair Step Widths We draw the wall by making a rectangle. We start at the right of the top stair and draw a line segment 4.5 to the right. Then, we extend a line downward to a point perpendicular to the last narrowed step. We add a third segment by catching the endpoint of the last narrowed step and we close the box by typing c for close as shown in the figure. Figure C.9 Draw the Wall to the Right of the Stairs To draw the banister, we draw a line upward 4.5 inches from the first step. We draw a line 4.5 inches to the left and another 4.5 inches downward. To close the banister, we type c for close. Figure C.10 Draw the Banister C-5

We then draw a single line from the banister to the wall to show the border of the first four steps. To display the handrail, we offset the last line we drew, 1.25 inches to the left and we offset that line 2 inches to the left. We will trim the lines representing the stairs that we cannot see under the handrail. Figure C.11 Draw the Handrail To show the right side of the hallway, we will copy the two lines on the right side of the stairway to make the right side of the hallway. After we select the two lines, we press Enter and then we choose any point on the graphic display. With the Ortho mode on, we push the mouse to the right and type 64 and Enter. The two lines appear as shown. Figure C.12 Copy the Wall for the Hallway We use the Extend command to elongate the two-copied lines. After opting for the Extend tool on the Modify toolbar, we pick the two lines and Enter. We pick the inside wall of the foyer as the perimeter to which the lines will lengthen. Then we pick both lines and they will reach to the front of the house. We use the Trim command to break the line at the intersection of both walls. Figure C.13 Extend the Hallway Wall C-6

Next, we will draw a line from the east wall to the hallway wall as shown. We utilize the perpendicular Osnap to force the line to maintain a right angle to the wall. Figure C.14 Enclose the Living and Family Room We offset the new line 2.25 inches upward and downward. We utilize the Trim command to break the lines at the wall intersection and we will erase our one construction line. Figure C.15 Draw the Living and Family Room Wall As we see in the next figure, we draw a line upward from the bend in the wall to separate the living and the family room ending at a point perpendicular to the north wall. We copy that line 4.5 inches to right. We need to use the Trim command to make proper wall intersections. Figure C.16 Draw the Wall to Separate Two Rooms C-7

We offset the top line 26.25 inches upward. We then use the Fillet command when it is set to zero radiuses to make perfectly square corners as shown in figure C.18. We can practice drawing these rooms, hallways, and staircases to improve our skill. We will draw a 4.5-inch vertical line from the midpoint of the line in the foyer. We then offset the single line 18 inches to the left and right as shown in Figure C.19. We use the Trim command to make the door opening and the erase command to remove the initial construction line. C-8

Figure C.21 Draw the Door Figure C.22 Add the Door Identifier When we show a door on an architectural floorplan, we use a number inside a circle to denote the type of door and we can match the description of the door by reading the same number on the door schedule in the plan set. Therefore, we add the number 1 at the midpoint of the line representing the door using Dtext and Middle for the text insertion point. We draw a circle at the same midpoint that has a radius of 4 as shown in Figure C.22. We show doors in the open position, so we use the Rotate command to open the door by 90 degrees as shown in Figure C.23. Figure C.23 Rotate the Door Open Figure C.24 First Point of the Arc C-9

We need to draw an arc to show the direction of the door opening. When we use the Arc command, we pick the start point as shown in Figure C.24. Then, we type C for center and pick the center point as shown in Figure C.25. Figure C.25 Second Point of the Arc Figure C.26 Last Point of the Arc We finally select the endpoint and we can see the faint imprint of the arc as shown in Figure C.26. The final arc is shown in Figure C.27. The last step in describing the front door is to dimension the location of the door from the wall. Typically, we would dimension the door from its center to the center of the wall, but we will take the measurement from the outside of the wall to the center of the door. We set the current layer to dimension and place the Linear Dimension as shown in Figure C.27. Figure C.27 Dimension the Doorway While we are still on the door layer, we will draw the double door from the living room to the family room. We will draw a 4.5-inch horizontal line from the midpoint of the line in the family room. We then offset the single line 24 inches up and down as shown in Figure C.28. We use the Trim command to make the door opening and the erase command to remove the initial construction line. On the current Door layer, we draw a single line from top right of the opening 24 inches down as shown in Figure C.30. We already have a 1 shown for the front door on the architectural floorplan; consequently, we add the number 2 at the endpoint of the line representing the door using Dtext and Middle for the text insertion point. We draw a circle at the same midpoint that has a radius of 4 as shown in Figure C.31. Figure C.30 Draw the Door Figure C.31 Add the Door Identifier We show doors in the open position, so we use the Rotate command to open the door by 90 degrees as shown in Figure C.32. We draw an arc showing the motion of the door. Remember, arcs are drawn counterclockwise, so we will start at the center of the circle, the center point is at the base point where the door connects to the wall, and the last point is at the endpoint of the door. Figure C.32 Rotate the Door Open Figure C.33 Draw the Door Arc To obtain the second of the double doors, we will use the Mirror command on the Modify toolbar. We select the door and arc and enter. We pick the center of the door identifier circle as the first point of the mirror line and with the Ortho mode on; we pick another point on a horizontal line. We get the second door when we enter so we do not delete the original door. C-11

We can make a block for the 48- inch double doors by typing block at the command line. The Block Definition window will appear. The base point will be where the two arcs come together. To pick the two doors, we press the Select objects button and pick the four entities. We will opt to convert them to blocks and to allow exploding. We will place another set of doors at the midpoint at the top end of the family room, so we will follow the same exact steps to make the 48-inch opening and then we will insert the double door block. Draw the Windows To add a window to the living room, we will change the current layer to window and draw a line from the midpoint of the south wall. We then use the Offset command copy the 4.5-inch line 36 inches to the left and to the right of the midline as shown in Figure C.38. Figure C.38 Draw the Window Location We can erase the middle line we used to begin to draw the window and then we will utilize the Trim command to remove the blue wall lines. After that, we will draw the two lines for the window as shown in Figure C.40. To get the two lines that represent the glazing, we offset the last two lines 1.5 inches to the inside as shown in Figure C.41. When we show a window on an architectural floorplan, we use a letter inside a hexagon to denote the type of window and we can match the description of the window by reading the same letter on the window schedule in the plan set. We add the letter A at the midpoint of the outside line representing the window using Dtext and Middle for the text insertion point. We draw a hexagon at the same midpoint that has a radius of 4 as shown in Figure C.42. We move the letter and hexagon 8 inches down. We can make a block for the 72- inch wide window by typing block at the command line. The Block Definition window will appear. The base point will be midpoint of the window. To pick the window, we press the Select objects button and pick the six entities. We will opt to convert them to blocks and not to allow exploding. We will place another 72-inch wide window at the midpoint of the family room, so we will follow the same exact steps to make the 72-inch opening and then we will insert the window block. In Figure C.45, we can see the dimension that measures the distance from the edge of a corner wall to the center of the window or from the center of the window to the middle of an interior wall. On the first line of dimensions, we measure the distance for doors and windows. On the second line of measurements, we show the lengths from wall to wall. When we eventually add the third layer of dimensions, we measure the width of the building. Figure C.45 Dimension the Basement Window To add a window to the west side of the family room, we will change the current layer back to window and draw a line from the endpoint of the outside of the lower right corner of the exterior wall. We will then use the Move command and shift the line 3 10.5 upward. We then use the Offset command copy the 4.5-inch line 16 inches above and below the midline as shown in Figure C.46. Figure C.46 Locate the Side Window We can erase the middle line we used to begin to draw the window and then we will utilize the Trim command to remove the blue wall lines. After that, we will draw the two lines for the window. To get the two lines that represent the glazing, we offset the last two lines 1.5 inches to the inside as shown in Figure C.47. We place a window designator with the letter B for the 32-inch wide window. Figure C.47 Draw the Side Window C-15

In Figure C.48, we can see the dimension that measures the distance from the edge of the family room to the center of the window. Then we add a dimension from window to window and a third from the window to the edge of the room. The second layer dimension measures from the edge of the building to the center of the interior wall. Figure C.48 Draw the Next East Window To add a 24-inch wide window to the south side of the stairway, we will change the current layer back to window and draw a line from the endpoint of the outside of the lower right corner of the exterior wall. We will then use the Move command and shift the line 2 2.25 to the right. We then use the Offset command copy the 4.5- inch line 12 inches to the left and to the right. After that, we will draw the two lines for the window. To get the two lines that represent the glazing, we offset the last two lines 1.5 inches to the inside. We place a window designator with the letter C for the 24-inch wide window. We can see the dimension that measures the distance from the edge of the wall to the center of the window. Then we add a dimension from edge of the wall to edge of the wall as shown in figure C.49. C-16

Drawing the Opening to the Living Room To draw the final detail in the floorplan, we will use the Offset command to copy the exterior wall 4 4.5 upward. We repeat the offset and copy the new line 6 feet upward as shown in figure C.50. We trim all the lines to make the 6-foot wide opening from the hallway to the living room. Dimension the Floor Plan Now that all the rooms, openings, doors and windows are drawn, we need to finish the dimensions. We utilize the sketch to account for every measurement shown by the home designer. We can use a highlighter as we place the linear dimension on the plan. Draw the two rooms, stairway, hallway, windows, and doors showing dimensions in 30 minutes. Continue this drill multiple times using the steps we have learned, each time completing the drawing under 30 minutes to maintain your World Class ranking C-18
