FROM THE CD TO THE LED: 30 YEARS OF HIGH-PRECISION OPTICAL INJECTION MOULDING From the CD to the LED: 30 years of high-precision optical injection moulding It all started with the CD in 1985. At the time we were among the first businesses anywhere in the world to take up the challenge of high-precision optical injection moulding. And we did that right here in the Tyrolean Lech Valley. The CD was followed by the DVD at the end of the 1990s. More recent times witnessed the emergence of the Blu-ray with its complex injection-compression moulding process. Yes indeed, we re confident when we say we know our way around the high-precision moulding of microstructures and nanostructures. And that s not all. We ve now entered the third dimension with kdg Opticomp, the new division we launched within our kdg Group in 2012. As our new name already says, we produce high-precision and innovative optical components. So even though we ve changed our technical shape and systems, we ve maintained our high standards and our fascination for exciting sectors of industry. As a result, we now provide customised solutions and innovative standard products for the brightly shining LED lighting industry as well as the dazzling media world. And we ve achieved this from a standing start from 0 to 60 mph in an incredibly short time! After all, we have 30 years of experience and expertise under our bonnet. And in the cockpit we ve always had a service GPS guiding us to a clearly defined destination: that of inspiring our existing and future customers. 2 3
HIGH-PRECISION OPTICAL COMPONENTS EXCELLENTLY MOULDED BY KDG OPTICOMP High-precision optical components excellently moulded by kdg opticomp There s little doubt about it: the LED is set to revolutionise the lighting industry just as the light bulb did before it. But this miraculous light source requires reasonably intelligent sparring partners in order to be a blazing contender. After all, it s the frontal optical components which point the diode light in the desired direction and transform its beams into figures of light that fill the particular room or space. Hence, two conditions must be fulfilled for the elegantly coated reflectors, or sometimes quite spacey looking freeform surface lenses, to perform their task of distributing light and not just in any old way, but according to clearly defined specifications based on exact calculations and a high-precision finish. The good news is that excellent partners exist on both counts. In keeping with our corporate philosophy of best service & focus excellence, we decided to go for best practice right from the start. Let s face it: mediocre products are interchangeable. Only top quality and innovative solutions endure. INNOVATIVE STANDARD PRODUCTS SPECIALISED IN CUSTOMISED SOLUTIONS because even standard products have to be special We faced a serious choice. Either we would continue to add a further lens with even more obsolescence to the thousands of lenses already out there, or we would have to go back to basics and completely rethink our approach. Now the brave new world of LEDs is already complicated enough, we thought. So why should we want to artificially inflate it by adding a further interchangeable catalogue of components? As a technology services provider and that s precisely how we see ourselves we feel obliged to offer our customers something better than merely average solutions. That is why we ll only be marketing standard products at sporadic intervals in future. And why we ll only do this in the case of special products such as those that offer innovative added value or the potential to inspire you to use them for new applications. That s precisely how it was with our first proprietorial product, Prima Place TM, a directional lens for universal use, which our cooperation partner Bartenbach designed and engineered for us. With Prima Place TM we are able to demonstrate to you our expertise in manufacturing extremely thick-walled freeform surface lenses while showing you the incredible efficiency with which points or areas can be illuminated through the combination of high lumen LEDs featuring a compact freeform surface lens.
