SPE International Organizes Presentation Advancement in Sand Control Fluids Technology The Kuwait Chapter of SPE International recently organized a presentation titled: Advancements in Sand Control Fluids Technology at the Boubiyan Hall, Radisson Blu Hotel. The presentation was delivered by Schlumberger Houston Principal Engineer Dr. Bala Gadiyar in the attendance of a number of specialists from various oil sector companies. Dr. Gadiyar, SPE Distinguished Lecturer for 2012-13, maintained that reservoirs requiring sand control are growing at a fast pace in the oil industry and that fluids play an important role in the successful design, execution, and performance of sand control completions. Therefore, due diligence is required in developing and selecting appropriate fluid, otherwise it could result in completion failure. In deep water environments, failure is not an option - otherwise the cost associated can be very high, Dr. Gadiyar affirmed. On the other hand, he asserted that there have been significant developments in fluid technology to address challenges in both cased and open-hole completions. The fluids used in cased-hole instances are very different in terms of chemistry when compared to those used in open-hole. In short, the objectives of this lecture were to: Familiarize the audience with key fluid technologies. Discuss benefits and limitations, technically supported by data. Review development processes. Demonstrate success with the aid of case histories. Identify technology gaps. Dr. Bala Gadiyar travelled to Kuwait to conduct this presentation on the invitation of the Kuwait Chapter of SPE International.
