Introduction Welcome to Guitar Class and the Napoleon High School music department. Over the next twelve weeks you will develop skills as a musician and a guitar player that will improve your abilities and last a lifetime. In this class you will study the anatomy of the guitar and its history, different styles of playing, correct technique, basic music theory, fingerpicking, and much more. At the end this course you will be able to read music, accompany yourself and others using a variety chords and patterns, and have the skills necessary to continue developing your guitar technique. Classroom Rules Treat others as you would like to be treated. Disrespectful behavior towards persons, music, or equipment will not be tolerated. Students must be in their assigned position/seat with their folder, pencil, music, and instrument. Always have your pencil at every rehearsal for score marking. Gum, food, candy, and drink cannot be allowed in the music room for they may be harmful to instruments, the room, and yourself. Talking is prohibited during rehearsal time. When the cutoff occurs, stop playing/singing, and wait for the next direction. Non-music books and personal items are not to be stored in the music room. Please use your locker. Leave the music room as you found it. Students are responsible for keeping the room clean. Students are responsible for any music assigned to them. Students will be charged for lost or damaged music and folders.

Expectations All students are expected to follow all classroom rules and procedures. Inability to follow rules and procedures will result in disciplinary action, i.e. verbal warning, Saturday detention, or referral to the office. You will also be responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen music and instruments. The student responsible will replace any instrument or music that is not returned in good condition. Curriculum Week 1 Guitar anatomy and history, theory and rhythm, strumming and finger picking, strings and tuning, notes on 6 th string (E, F, G), C chord and G chord (G, B, & E strings only), worksheets, Week 2 Listening assignment (Classical), continued theory and rhythm, picking patterns, tuning, notes on the 5 th string (B, C, D), review of 6 th string, reading chord symbols, add chords D & A, songs, worksheets, Week 3 Listening assignment (Folk), new patterns, tuning, notes on the 4 th string (G, A), review of 5 th & 6 th string, 1 st solo, songs added to song folder, new chord symbols and review of old symbols, add chords F & C7, worksheets, Week 4 Listening assignment (Country/Southern), review patterns, tuning, notes on the 3 rd and 2 nd string (A, B, C / D, E, F), review of strings 4-6, perform 1 st solo, review songs and add new to song folder, minor chords and theory, review all chords, add chords d & a (lower-case indicates minor) worksheets, Week 5 Listening assignment (Jazz & Blues), strumming and patterns, tuning, notes on 1 st string (E, F, G), review strings, accompaniment and solo, review songs and add to song folder, major scale pattern, blues scale, review chords and add chords G, C, E, e, A7, & a7, chord progressions I, IV, and V7, worksheets,
