KINNICKINNIC RIVER LAND TRUST community - conservation - education Working with the community to protect the natural resources & scenic beauty of the Kinnickinnic River watershed

Fiscal Year 2011 Board & Staff From the KRLT President Board of Directors: Dan Wilkening President Brent Johnson Vice President Michelle Bredahl Treasurer Susan Goode Secretary Dale Gallenberg Paul Goudreault Dale Jorgenson Kent Johnson Joel Larsen Staff: Dave Fodroczi Executive Director Eric Forward Conservation Programs Manager Amy Weber Operations Manager Those of us who live and love the Kinni know from experience that our beloved river is ever changing. From the constant flow of water to the changing seasons and annual cycles of trout, birds, wildflowers and forest, the river and its watershed are always in transition. In keeping with our Kinni, 2011 was a year of transition for the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust itself. The departure of our Executive Director of 3½ years, Nelson French, signaled the start of our transition in March 2011. We greatly appreciate all of Nelson s contributions during his time with us. He certainly moved us all down the river and improved things along the way. Following Nelson s departure, the Board of Directors reviewed and assessed KRLT s strategy to prepare for the future and recruit a new Executive Director. We were fortunate to have had some great help along the way. Retired River Falls businessman Dale Jorgenson agreed to step away from the Board of Directors and serve as Interim Executive Director. In short order, Dale recruited watershed native Amy Weber to staff our operations, continued several fundraising activities, and organized our office relocation. At the same time, land trust consultant Jane Prohaska worked with our Board and interim staff on strategic planning and streamlining some of our operations and financial management. Following eight months of preparation and perseverance, we were pleased to welcome Dave Fodroczi as our new Executive Director from a public service career in planning and community development in St. Croix County and Wisconsin. Throughout the process, our Board of Directors contributed their time and expertise to make KRLT an even stronger organization. Through the transitional period, the Board and interim staff continued to move KRLT forward. Our 2011 Annual Report highlights a number of projects in our core program areas of conservation, education and community. Good work is underway throughout the watershed to keep the Kinnickinnic River cold, clean and clear as we anticipate the 20 th Anniversary of the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust in 2013. I am excited about our future. Great people make great organizations. That is especially true for you our members, donors, sponsors and volunteers. Your contributions of time and financial resources are the foundation of what we can accomplish. We sincerely thank you for your continued support! Kinnickinnic River Land Trust 265 Mound View Rd. Suite C P.O. Box 87 River Falls, WI 54022 715.425.5738 www.kinniriver.org Sincerely, Dan Wilkening President KRLT Board of Directors Your contributions of time and financial resources are the foundation of what we can accomplish. 2

Conservation, Education & Community Highlights KRLT believes that conservation, community and educational activities intertwine to provide outstanding results. These successes lead to a better protected and cared for river and watershed. CONSERVATION The Quarry Road property will be home to grassland birds such as the Eastern Meadowlark. Photo by Jack Bartholmai Quarry Road Acquisition We jump-started our year by completing a large acquisition project known as the Quarry Road property. This project was in the works for awhile and had been previously slated for significant development. The property presented a unique opportunity for KRLT to protect this important 114 acre parcel that added directly to the Swinging Gate property. The long term goal for the property will be restoring native prairie and oak savanna to the site. A major focus of the restoration is to provide important habitat for grassland birds which happen to be the fastest declining group of birds in Wisconsin. The Swinging Gate property is now owned by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources but was purchased by KRLT with five days notice before it went to public auction. This is the most heavily accessed fishing location on the Kinni. The Quarry Road project builds on this conservation achievement and links together two DNR parcels as well as a private parcel protected with a conservation easement held by KRLT. The conservation puzzle is coming together one piece at a time in this area of the Kinni. Preserve Kiosks and Educational Interpretation With the help of our intern Anna Warren, we were able to install informational kiosks at our Jackson and Kelly Creek Preserves that provide visitors both educational information regarding natural resources as well as information helpful for those visiting the Preserves. We also completed an educational interpretation project that includes signs explaining the native prairie that dominated the landscape of the watershed and the importance of Kelly Spring and groundwater to the health of the Kinni. EDUCATION KRLT intern, Anna Warren next to one of the newly installed kiosks. 4

Protect the Kinni Campaign Donations for Land Protection Celebrating the Stephen E. Budd Memorial Access at the Swinging Gate Property. Celebrating Community and Access to the Kinni for All In July, we gathered with the friends and family of the late Stephen Budd to dedicate two sites on the Kinni, one at the previously mentioned Swinging Gate property and the other at River Drive, for universal access improvements. What started as a vision of providing improved fishing access for wounded returning military veterans has grown into a project that makes access for fishing the Kinni more readily available to kids, aging anglers, and others with unique physical limitations to enjoy fishing the Kinni. Helping to connect our entire community to the river that so many already enjoy is a key to successful long term protection of the river.
