4 Out & About There are lots of shows to choose from to attend this weekend. Promoters have been telling us that sales and floor traffic have been up. There is a wide selection of auctions in this week s paper to appeal to just about every kind of enthusiast. The weather sure has been treating us wonderful lately. 6 Hundreds of Dealers & Thousands of Shoppers Meet at Minnesota s 24th Annual Cambridge Antique Fair Article & photos by Brian Maloney I d guess that nearly every antiques enthusiast in Minnesota and beyond is familiar with its venerable summer antiques shows - Gold Rush Days, The Minnesota Antique Spectacular, and the like. But there s another Gopher State antiques tradition that s been around nearly as long: the Cambridge Antique Fair, held just north of the Twin Cities in little Cambridge, Minnesota. From humble beginnings, the show has grown to attract hundreds of dealers and thousands of shoppers at each two-day annual event, held this year on August 1st & 2nd. The show was founded two decades ago by local antiquers Shawn & Cheryl Hewitt, and has matured into a major regional antiques event in the subsequent twenty-plus years. When the Hewitts retired a several years ago, they passed the reigns of the event to an equally experienced pair of antiques show promoters: Kermit & Jeanie Wellman. The Wellmans, who have been antiques dealers for twenty-five years, are able successors to the Hewitts, as they ve also promoted the nearby Anoka Antiques Show for nearly as long. 2015 turned out to be another successful year for the show, Jeanie told me. It s helped that we d been dealers here since soon after the founding of the show. The indoor booths filled quickly, and included quite a few new vendors. The weather was perfect, and we had a nice crowd on both days. The Isanti County Fairgrounds, a little more than thirty minutes of the Twin Cities, has been the show s home for its two-decade history. Parking is free, and admission only $6. You ll even find a discount admission coupon at their website www.metropromos.com. Many of the dealers have been returning since that very first show. Among them: area antique enthusiasts Cliff & Sherry Thornberg. You ll find them set up just inside the main entrance, their booth filled with vintage toys, advertising, and more - including a large selection of Grain Belt Beer memorabilia. And shoppers found exceptional period furniture at New to You Antiques. They always bring a big selection to every Cambridge Antique Fair, this time ranging from a southern U.S. mahogany sideboard to a funky French wine riddling rack. Iowa s Lost in Time Antiques had an eclectic furniture mix too - my favorite a stylish Art Deco dental cabinet in blonde maple and shiny black enamel. Vintage toys more your thing? Look no further than the booth of Mad Cat Antiques & Collectibles, where the inventory ranged from early cast iron and pressed steel toys to some choice 1930s and 1940s Fisher Price pull-toys. And Ugly Rick s Collections came with toys and advertising of all sorts; a highlight there a group of just-acquired English porcelain-on-steel automotive signs. It s unique finds like these that have kept shoppers coming back to the Cambridge Antique Fair for more than twenty years. For more information about the show, and about their June Anoka Antique Show, give the Wellmans a call at 612-558-8097, or visit their website www.metropromos.com. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of next year s Cambridge Antique Fair in the Auction Action Antique News! It was a packed house in the vast display of The BIG White House, where I found vintage audio artifacts bargains like this Silvertone Phonograph ($99) and Philco radio/turntable priced at $95. 763-506-0562 Two more funky vintage finds from The BIG White House: the wooden Coca-Cola case of bottles priced at $45, the Magnajector projector complete with box at $29. 763-506-0562 Sunny skies & balmy temperatures meant a big turnout for the Cambridge Antique Fair, held as always at the Isanti County Fairgrounds a short drive north of Minnesota s Twin Cities. Two 1950 s Milwaukee Braves artifacts from Kitchen Antiques: the pewter bowl priced at $115, the fan-made scrap book also at $115. 608-752-1279 It was vintage advertising central at Miller s Antiques, among the mix this 5 Zenith Home Appliances sign (circa 1955, $298) to a light-up Minnesota insurance agent advertising clock priced at $110. 651-213-5556 Red Cedar Mercantile came with a sea of vintage tools, plus this great fire pit set with benches made from huge timbers & iron wagon wheels and including a huge iron cauldron, $1,200. www.red-cedar-mercantile.com My period tool favorite at Red Cedar Mercantile: this portable blacksmith s forge with squirrel-cage bellows operated with a hand pump, $300. www.red-cedar-mercantile.com

Fox Terriers for Sale sign, 36 square and priced at $725. 218-341-5913 Choice boxed toys awaited at Ugly Rick s Collections, among them this windup Sparkling Tank priced at $365. 218-341-5913 Two art pottery highlights from Gordon & Sue Hoppe: the 8 Roseville Blackberry jardinière priced at $995, the unusual 15 vessel by Wisconsin artist Ruth Hanson at $49. 763-546-7461 Two more boxed vintage toys from Ugly Rick s Collections: the Japanese batteryoperated Cannon Jeep priced at $395, the near-mint Tonka #926 Pumper Truck at $465. 218-341-5913 Acres Antiques came with acres of vintage fashion jewelry, plus Red Wing pottery including this Bobwhite pitcher ($225) and cookie jar - $129. 507-530-3411

8 Continued from pages 6 & 7 A trio of vintage Grain Belt Beer plaster fish plaques from Cliff & Sherry Thornburg: the 1955 rainbow trout and smallmouth bass priced at $135 each, the 1956 crappie at $150. Cliff & Sherry Thornberg have been setting up at the Cambridge Antique Fair since the inaugural show more than twenty years ago, bringing choice advertising from soft drink & beer trays to this 1950 s Pepsi-Cola rack sign priced at $150. I found this pretty cool vintage Gleason boat-turned-display shelf in Cliff & Sherry Thornberg s display, price tag $1,295. A local collector of rusty relics brought this well-used 1964 Mattel X-15 recumbent tricycle, asking price $150. Dave s Collectibles came with some choice American Flyer items, from a 1930 s Flyer Town Freight Station ($60) to a 1933 four-piece train set priced at $175. Shoppers found period advertising of all sorts at one local collectors display, from a 1942 Wing Chong Lung Company calendar (2 x 3, $25) to a Bowes Seal Fast gas station counter display priced at $85. Mantiques lived up to their name, bringing finds like this coyote mount priced at $375. Two great vintage kid s bikes from Dave s Collectibles: the 1969 Murray Wildcat priced at $175, the 1970 Huffy Rail at $250. Two cast iron toy gems from Dave s Collectibles: the 9 Hubley #5 Racer priced at $200, the classic Kenton Jaeger concrete mixer at $375. John Deere Dealer Poster Brings an Incredible $8,500 at Rich Penn Auction Article & photos by Rich Penn Dean Stump's collecting interests were tightly focused on anything John Deere green! But that covered a lot of categories. The auction reflected Stump's depth and diversity within Deere collecting. During preview, collectors poured over the advertising literature for Deere and related companies, watch fobs and pinbacks, signs, displays, manuals, even cast iron implement seats and tools. The auction was fast and furious. The Rich Penn Auction crew moved the lots through at 80 lots an hour and bidders weren't shy. The top lots were advertising pieces and it was clear, John Deere green was quickly turning into U.S. currency green. A huge framed paper dealer poster, 70 inches high, for Model A and B General Purpose tractors was the top lot. It fired up a crowd full of bidders and settled in at a whopping $8,500. Prices are all hammer prices and don't reflect the 10%-20% buyer's premium. The 72 inch wide porcelain sign for John Deere Farm Implements was a close runner-up at $7,500. It wasn't just big things the brought big prices. An early hay stacker open end wrench, embossed with Dain Mfg. Co. - Carrollton, MO turned out a top bid of $4,750. Joseph Dain invented the inclined hay stacker. The company he founded had a close tie to John Deere starting in the mid 1890's. They allowed John Deere Plow Co. of Kansas City to sell their tools. That relationship evolved into Dain selling their implements through Deere dealers in Minneapolis and elsewhere. Dain Manufacturing Co. merged with John Deere in 1911. Another top lot that surprised many was a John Deere Fertilizer display. Deere was in the fertilizer business for a very brief period in the late 1950's and early 1960's. So anything with that brand ID is rare and very collectible. This 12 inch wide display with 6 plexiglass containers quickly grew a healthy bid of $4,250. Another lot that rang a bell when it sold was a cast iron dinner bell with John Deere Plow Company cast in the bell yoke. Bidders chased this one up to a top bid of $4,000. Very small things brought big money too. A John Deere match safe with an inscription reading, John Deere Plows-the World Standard, and much easier to carry than the dinner bell, brought the same money. It also sold for $4,000. Another pocket-sized piece selling well was the John Deere pocket mirror. This celluloid pocket mirror showed an Indian in a wagon wheel and heralded the John Deere Plow Co. Gen. Agts., From Forest to Farm. At only 2.25 in dia., it still commanded a $3,750 bid. Another pocket mirror showing the 10 John Deere Companies, this one 4 in dia. sold for $3,250. Watch fobs also gathered strong interest. The top fob was an ornate gold-plated fob with John Deere D on a celluloid background and John Deere Plow Works embossed on the back. That c.1915 fob sold at $2,250. Another fob with a brass John Deere plow on a mother-of-pearl shield sold at $1,100. Dean Stump was quite a scholar on John Deere history and he had a massive amount of early paper pieces to use as reference. Many of those lots were packed with images, engravings and lithos of early Deere equipment. One of those lots contained four Deere & Webber Co.- Minneapolis catalogs. They were the D, E, F & H catalogs. All in excellent condition, the four catalogs sold for $3,500. A single catalog for Deere, Mansur & Co. Wholesale Farm Machinery & Vehicles, in the 1st edition, quickly brought $1,800. The literature needed to be displayed in the dealerships. There were several original John Deere displays for holding literature and catalogs. The earliest, a 51 H slanted oak case with a four legged deer transfer on the top sold at $3,000. Other items that produced serious collector competition included an embossed metal sign for John Deere Quality Farm Implements from Ahrens Implement Co., Story City, Iowa. This sign, in excellent condition, harvested a bid of $2,500. A cast iron John Deere letter holder, with original gold paint, delivered a top bid of $2,000. A John Deere planter box for Deere Beet Seeder, with cast iron ends, planted a number of bids that quickly grew to the winning $1,900 bid. One of the more unique pieces to surprise bidders was a John Deere Up to Date coin purse. From the Deere Plow Co. in Kansas City, the embossed leather purse needed to hold a lot of coins to handle the winning bid of $1,300. Another crowd favorite and certainly unusual was an early, c.1930's, Deere baseball uniform. The uniform, including shirt, knickers, belts, socks and leggings powered in a grand slam winning bid of $1,100. According to the crowd, the Grand Finale Two-Cylinder Expo was great fun! To many, the Dean Stump auction added an appropriate Special Performance to this final event. They came to celebrate the heritage of a great company and many went home with outstanding historical bits and pieces from this great company. Rich Penn commented to the crowd, I've grown up in Waterloo and been surrounded by John Deere all my life. It was great fun assisting the Stump family in selling this collection. I learned a great deal and met a lot of other collectors who will cherish the pieces from Dean's collection just as much as he did. The auction concluded at about 4:00 PM and by 8:00 PM the Electric Park Ballroom was standing empty again, waiting patiently for the next celebratory event. That's just like it has been for the past 110 years. For information on future Rich Penn Auctions, call 319-291-6688 or go to www.richpennauctions.com. Antiques Abbreviations by Mike Paul A while ago a reader asked about explaining some of the abbreviations they encounter in auction ads. This got me thinking about the abbreviations auctioneers use and why we use them. After a phone call to Gloria I offered to put together a listing. By definition, an abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase used for brevity. Within context and reason it identifies certain aspects of a piece to the buyer without needlessly going into detail. A lamp buyer will know what a bracket lamp is. It s unnecessary to say, Victorian cast iron wall bracket with mercury glass reflector, chimney & drop in finger font. Most auctioneers use abbreviations in order to keep the size of the ad affordable. However it can be too much of a good thing and some of the more arcane descriptions can confuse or mislead the reader. To a person who collects a particular category most abbreviations in that category are readily recognized. To anybody else they are probably gibberish. Even a novice farm toy buyer won t need a three day weekend to decipher IH, McD & JD. WWI & WWII are obvious but would most folks recognize CW (Civil War) out of context? Coins, firearms, Hummels (152/A TMK3 UB K255 HB, anyone?) and other categories all have their own abbreviations that often are exclusive to that field. But if you are a glassware buyer does it really matter if you can t translate a 28g, o/u, d-bbl, ss w/syn stock and vr? Some descriptions, while not technically correct, get the point across. For example Jewel T, (which is short for Jewel Tea, a grocery chain) takes up less space than Autumn Leaf, (a pattern name for china offered as a premium by Jewel Tea). This may seem like a trivial difference but similar descriptions over several publications begin to add up. A listing that encompassed all of the collecting fields would be more of a project than I can take on but the following abbreviations should get you through most ads for antique auctions. If you have others you d like to add to the list or that you ve wondered about, please email them to me at mike@paulauction.com. A&C - Arts & Crafts.
