Installation Instructions for Converting Hinging on Roll-In Refrigerators Part number 161651 hinge conversion kit RH is for converting a right side hinged door and part number 161652 hinge conversion kit LH is for converting a left side hinged door. The hinge kits include the following parts: 161218 bottom hinge (161219 bottom hinge for LH kit) 015130 top hinge (015129 top hinge for LH kit) 015124 self-closing hinge cartridge kit (includes self-closing hinge cartridge, square nylon hinge bushing, spring clip, nylon washer and screw) 002114 7/32 Drill Bit 021315 11/64 Drill Bit 136074 1/4-20 screw (6 each) 161650 Installation Instructions Tools Required Screw gun Phillips screw bit for screw gun Flat bladed screwdriver Short Phillips screwdriver Drill bit (approx. 3/8 diameter and 4 long) 1
This hinge conversion kit will require two people to install and should take approximately one hour to complete. The photos in these instructions show a RH hinged door. The LH hinged door will be a mirror image. Step 1 Disconnect the unit from power and remove all contents. Step 2 Remove the existing door. Open the door to approximately 90 and remove the two screws securing the top hinge to the cabinet. The door can now be lifted up and off the bottom hinge. Caution! This top hinge is spring loaded and can snap shut if bumped. The screw attaching the top hinge should be removed and the top hinge carefully removed from the door. Set the door aside and remove the bottom hinge from the cabinet (two screws). Step 3 Remove the self-closing hinge cartridge and top hinge from the top of the door (two screws, save screws for step 6). Once the screws are removed you can pry the self-closing hinge cartridge out of the door with a flat blade screwdriver. Step 4 Remove the square nylon hinge bushing from the bottom of the door. 2
Step 5 Install new square nylon hinge bushing into the hole in the top of the door that previously held the self-closing hinge cartridge. Step 6 Install the new self-closing hinge cartridge into the bottom of the door in the hole that previously held the square nylon hinge bushing. Start by using the screw gun with a 4 long drill bit to remove the foam insulation so the self-closing hinge cartridge will fit up into the square hole. Once the insulation is removed, insert the self-closing hinge cartridge into the hole until it is flush with the bottom of the door. Use the self-closing hinge cartridge as a template and drill two holes in the bottom of the door with the 11/64 drill bit provided to accept the screws to secure the self-closing hinge cartridge to the door. Use the 2 screws removed in step 3 to secure the self-closing hinge cartridge to the door. 3
Step 7 Attach the new bottom hinge to the cabinet. Using the 7/32 drill bit provided, drill out (enlarge) the two existing holes in the cabinet used for the bottom hinge. Secure the supplied bottom hinge to the cabinet using two of the 1/4-20 screws provided and the middle two holes in the bottom hinge. Using the bottom hinge as a template and the 7/32 drill bit, drill the remaining two holes required to secure the bottom hinge to the cabinet. Secure the bottom hinge with two more 1/4-20 screws. Step 8 Adjust the self-closing hinge cartridge on the door. Using the top hinge removed in step 2 as a tool, place the square hole over the square protrusion on the self-closing hinge cartridge and turn the square protrusion approximately 120 counter-clockwise (clockwise for left side hinges). The self-closing hinge cartridge is spring loaded and it will take some force to turn and you will feel a dwell when you get to 120. Once this is done set the top hinge aside as it is no longer needed. 4
Step 9 Install the door onto the cabinet. Two people are required for this step. Stack the nylon washer (first) and spring clip (second) included in the kit over the square hole in the bottom hinge. With the self closing hinge cartridge set as described in step 8, hold the door at approximately a 120 angle to the cabinet and insert the square projection on the self-closing hinge cartridge into the square hole in the bottom hinge. One person can hold the door while the second guides the square projection into the bottom hinge. This is a critical step to make sure the door self closes when installed. Once inserted, do not lift the door off the bottom hinge. While one person holds the door in position with the self-closing hinge cartridge engaged with the bottom hinge, the second can install the top hinge. Using the top hinge provided with the kit, insert the hinge pin into the square nylon hinge bushing on top of the door installed in step 4 and using the remaining two 1/4-20 screws and the holes in the cabinet, secure the top hinge to the cabinet. 5
Step 10 Check to confirm that the door self closes and the sweep gasket seals at the bottom. The sweep gasket is adjustable if it binds on the floor or if it does not seal. If the door does not self close you may have to go back and redo steps 8 and 9. Step 11 Once you have confirmed the door closes and the sweep gasket is adjusted properly, install the screw into the bottom of the self-closing hinge cartridge. This step will require two people. To do this step, the cabinet will need to be tipped back to allow access to the bottom of the bottom hinge. While one person carefully tips and holds the unit back to raise the front approximately 6 off the floor, the second person installs the screw into the end of the square projection in the self-closing hinge cartridge. Step 12 Reconnect the unit to power and load with product once the unit has reached the proper temperature. 6
