January 201 Sew It Goes 1 M ic rosoft sew it goes January 2018 Reminders Remember to wear your name tags. To Bring: Donation for Soup Kitchen Show and Tell Items Our Facebook group is Lake Norman Quilters. LNQ blog address: http:// lknquilters.wordpress.com/ Dues are due in January: $20. Note from the President As we begin our new year as Lake Norman Quilters I ve been thinking about the topic of goals and the purpose of a quilt guild. According to the dictionary a guild is an association of people with common aims and interests. I think this definition is insufficient to describe our guild and the many others I ve visited over the years. Quilters come together in their guilds to learn from each other; to share their talents and their quilting adventures and misadventures. They are creative people who derive satisfaction from putting needle to fabric and who are eager for the opportunity to master new skills. I have found them to be not only generous in the sharing of their skills but also quick to credit the talents of those who teach them. In short, the members of my quilt guild are valued friends. continued on page 2

January 201 Sew It Goes 2 Note from the President, continued... I hope that over the course of our next year we can spread the word about our guild, finding others who would like to share the guild experience with us. I m setting a few serious goals for myself this year. They include the following: 1. Clean and organize my quilting closet (again). 2. Finish a large, pesky UFO that I started around 2009. 3. Make three charity quilts. 4. Relearn that slick little technique for burying a quilting thread that ran out and starting the new one. Which one of you first taught me that??? 5. Learn to do some more advanced quilting stitches. I m afraid I ve become the stippling queen totally due to my timidity in tackling anything else. 6. Promote Lake Norman Quilters in my community. Colleen Thrailkill REMEMBER: Membership dues of $20 are due at the January meeting!

January 201 Sew It Goes 3 Minutes from December s Meeting The December 19, 2017 meeting was called to order by President, Judy Whitehead. There were 21 members and 1 guest attending the meeting. The December program is the annual holiday party. Members enjoyed a potluck dinner at lovely holiday-decorated tables, followed by the Christmas gift exchange. Following the festivities, a brief business meeting was conducted. Marian Voorhees announced she volunteered to be the Charity Quilts Committee Chairperson, replacing Colleen Thrailkill. Marian reviewed the materials available to members for making charity quilts and table runners. Donna Holcomb reminded members that she is organizing a Round Robin project for 2018. Initial details are in the November newsletter. Interested members are asked to send an email to Donna Holcomb before the end of January. The Round Robin will go on for 2018, though the number of months will vary according to the number of participants. Each participant will need to make a center block and include fabric and likes/dislikes in his/her box to circulate to other participants. Dolores Forbare reported the treasury balance is $13,271.14. Marianne McCormic announced she is retiring and that she and her husband will be moving to Lenior, North Carolina. Joyce Mullis led the Secret Pal Reveal for 2017. Judy Whitehead announced the monthly mini-quilt is a snowman block. Printed instructions were on the welcome table and will be posted on-line. The meeting concluded with the installation of the 2018 Officers as follows: President: Colleen Thrailkill 1st Vice Presidents: Barbara Barrier and Sandra Riggins 2nd Vice President: Donna Holcomb Treasurer: Dolores Forbare Secretary: Cheryl Lands Respectfully submitted by Cheryl Lands
