EE(IM) 4080 Final Year Project Associate Professor Goh Wang Ling FYP Committee Chairman March 04, 2019 1

Outline Final Year Project (FYP) How FYP is related to Final Year Option FYP Matters Before Project Allocation/Selection FYP Matters During Project Allocation/Selection FYP Requirements FYP Assessments 2

EE(IM) 4080 Final Year Project Every final year student of EEE is required to undertake a project supervised by one or two faculty members. You may start your FYP in the next semester and it will spread over one academic year (2 semesters). No extension is allowed except for approved semester leave. Add/drop during the first 2 weeks of semester is allowed. 3

Is FYP linked to Final Year Option? FYPs are NOT classified according to options (Electrical & Systems Eng., Electronic Eng., InfoCommunication Eng.). Should you choose an FYP from your final year option? Useful but not necessary or always possible! How to tell whether an FYP is in your chosen option? 1. By the project title/summary 2. By the main supervisor s area affiliation and his/her research interest Try to choose an FYP close to your final-year option 4

Project Selection Key Information Each project must have a main/sole FT supervisor from the School of EEE Project Types: Type A Projects proposed by EEE professors, URECA-FYP Type B Projects proposed by external partners such as research institutes and industries, such as RI/SCP, ISP. Check with your potential EEE supervisors RI : Research Institute SCP : School Collaboration Project, ISP : Industrial Sponsored Project 5

Project Allocation/Selection Two phases (see next slide) Do your homework before selecting project/supervisor RI-FYP projects may require interviews by RI supervisors. They may be more demanding and challenging. For RI-FYP, ISP-FYP, you may need to go to RI or company outside NTU regularly, say, once a week. 6

Allocation/Selection Phases Phase 1 Selection by Supervisor (Early April) Discuss with your potential supervisor You will receive a confirmation email if the project is successfully allocated to you Phase 2 Selection by Students and Allocation by Computer (After Exam, from mid to end May). Selection statistics will be provided (email notification will be sent). Final announcement on allocation: Mid-June 7

FYP Requirements (PRE-REQUISITES after examination results are out for this semester) Year 4 standing or in the final study year, meeting all the AU requirements for the BEng degree upon completion of FYP. Have a balance of no more than 44 AUs (46 AUs for IEM students) inclusive of 8-AU FYP at point of registration of FYP. Completed Professional Internship (PI) *. * ABP students are allowed to register for FYP concurrently with PI at any given time. * Double Degree/Major students are allowed to register for FYP if taking up Professional Attachment (PA) during May to July period. 8

Interim Assessment FYP Assessments Project Plan/Strategy Submit to Supervisor at ~week 6 Interim Report submit to both Supervisor and Examiner near the end of the first semester of FYP Main Assessment Project Final Report Submit to both Supervisor and Examiner in early April Project Demonstration To Examiner after report submission Oral Presentation To both Supervisor and Examiner Evaluation Criteria Carry out preparatory work, such as literature search and review Evaluate materials of relevance and understand the background Focus on the main issues, formulate the problem, and identify key tasks Validate the problem statement through analytical studies, simulations, experiments etc. Write a report and present the work 9

Project Assessment All FYP reports (interim report, draft and final reports) must be submitted to Turnitin service to check for plagiarism, where the service produces a similarity score and originality report. A master course site will be created for students to submit the FYP report for Turnitin checking. Supervisor s and examiner s personal course sites will be created for students to submit the FYP reports to the supervisor and examiner. A minimum CGPA of 4.50 plus at least an 'A-' grade for the FYP is required for the award of the Honours Degree with Highest Distinction. 10

Submission Details for Semester 1 FYP Project Plan/Strategy submission: 16 September 2019 Interim report submission: 11 November 2019 Draft report submission: 27 March 2020 Final report submission: 8 April 2020 Demo: 13 17 April 2020 Oral presentation: 11-13 May 2020 (after the last exam paper) Note: For Semester 2 FYP, please refer to the FYP Website. 11

Useful Information and Guidelines Check your emails regularly, particularly those starting with FYP Visit the EEE FYP website regularly. Guidelines, schedules, key announcements, and all other important information about EEE FYP are provided. http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/eee/fyp/ Or simply search NTU EEE FYP in Google 12

Final Year Option Talk 4 March 2019 ELECTRICAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING (ECAL) By John Chan

ELECTRICAL AND SYSTEMS ENGINEERING OPTION Students are required to take 2 DESIGN elective courses and 3 TECHNICAL elective courses. Students must choose all design and technical elective courses from their chosen option group. For specialization, students must choose the design and technical elective courses from the respective areas of specialization.
