Educator s Guide to Cartoon Yourself in Photoshop Overview: Photoshop is the leading program for editing photos. The aim of this lesson is to help students become more familiar with this industry standard software and apply troubleshooting skills independently when creating the product. Grades and Subject Areas: Grades 7-8 Objectives: Student can use keystrokes to switch between tools. Student can use paint brush, magic and eye dropper fluidly. Student understands the purpose of channels and can use channels. Student understand the purpose of masks and can use masks. I Can Statements: I can use keystrokes to switch between tools. I can use the paintbrush tool, magic wand and eye dropper fluidly. I can use channels to select just the black areas of my picture I can use masks to create a shadow. I can use the handout to move between steps with help from the teacher demonstration. Curriculum Connections: Alaska Content Standards: 7th Grade CTE: Students will use multiple Adobe Suite applications to create a variety of projects. Prior to Lesson: Teacher Prep: Handouts Student Prep: Tour of tools and Keystrokes Paintbrush: B Magic Wand: W Space Bar: Move image Zoom in and Out: Command + or Command Control Click: Change paint Brush Time Needed for Lesson: 2 60 minute blocks Block 1: Filters and Cleaning Block 2: Cleaning and Coloring Directions: Before teaching the lesson have students practice the tools: Magic Wand, Paint Brush, Zooming, Layers, and Masks Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop. Step 2: Go to Filters in the menu and choose Filter Gallery. Choose poster edges and set Edge thickness to 10, Edge intensity to 1 and Posterization ot 6. 3 Created by Christina Hum - February 6, 2014

Step 3: Go to your color swatches and make sure that your black is on top of the white. Use the arrow to switch them. Step 4: Go back to filter and filter gallery and choose sketch and torn edges. Change the settings to Image balance 6, Smoothness 15, contrast 3. HINT: Be sure to choose Filter Gallery down in the list and not at the top. Otherwise it will try to reapply the last filter. HINT: These may not be exact numbers for your picture based on the light and darks in your picture. You may need to adjust somewhat so that you get nice outlines. Apply the filter. Step 5: Go to your color swatches and switch them back to white on top. Then go to your Paint brush. Change to about 31 px and hardness of 100%. Paint the background white and all areas that have black dots. HINT: Control click allows you to change your paint brush size. And command + and allow you to zoom in and out of the image. Use these quick tools for drawing in all the black lines and use the white to erase the black dots. Step 6: Go to your Filter and Filter gallery and choose cutout. Set number of levels to 8, edge simplicity to 4, and edge fidelity to 2. Apply the filter. Step 7: Go to channels Select the magic wand and then click on the white area of your picture.be sure to select all the white areas by holding down the shift key and selecting any enclosed white area. Step 8: Now go to select in the menu bar and select the inverse. Command C (copy the image) Step 9: Go back to layers and create a new Layer DO NOT PASTE the image in. INSTEAD grab your black paint brush and paint over the canvas. Step 10; Create another layer and go to select in the menu bar and deselect and paint this layer white. Step 11: Move the white layer below Layer 1. Step 12: Now time to paint the face. Use the magic wand and select on the inside and then click on the color swatches on the right. Select a color and then switch to paint brush and paint. Don t forget to paint your eyes white. Step: repeat for Hair, clothes. step 13: Now time to make the shadow. Using the magic wand select the white area outside the headshot. Then go to select menu and select inverse. Click the mask tool on your layers tab. It is the box with a circle in it next to Fx. Step 14: Hold down the command key and click again on the mask. This selects it. Step 15: Create a new layer and DO NOT PASTE. Using the paintbrush tool paint in over the selection. Step 16: Move the shadow to the left and change the opacity to 40%. Assessment: Observe the students using keystrokes and following steps.
