Jord watched as the elf peered around the corner into the dark chamber before them. The dwarf warrior did not like the smell that was coming out of the dark room, it reminded him too much like his wife s cooking. By the Gods the woman could burn toast he thought, hell that was why he was always seeking out these dark dungeons, any excuse to eat something other then her gruel. The elf signaled that the way was not guarded by a trap, and so the dwarf and the small human sorceress took up a position near the entrance while the burly human warrior and the elf entered. As soon as the two stepped into the chamber the whole place lit up with a bright light and the laughter of the necromancer that waited within. Damn Jord cursed as he watched the hoard of skeletons rush him and his companions. Maybe he should have stayed home today and eaten the roast his wife was burning. Introduction Dark Dungeon is a set of rules that will allow you to play a solo session of an RPG lite game. These core rules will then allow you to expand your adventures with future locations and adventures packets. So sit back, get something to drink and some munchies and have a great time. Game Construction Once you are ready to play Dark Dungeon, the first thing you will find necessary is to construct the game components. For the most part, the amount of time and extra expense you are willing to put into the game s construction is up to you. The simplest format is to print up all the needed parts and then just cut them out and go to it. Paper pieces are though, a bit difficult to deal with, so if you wish to continue to play Dark Dungeon over and over again, and we hope you do, then you may want to invest a bit of time and effort in making your game components more durable and usable. Suggestions on Component s Construction and Printing First off, you should, if you want to spend the money, buy some good quality paper. Use this to print out the various components and counters. High end paper will give you a better quality image and if you set your printer to its highest quality setting, you should get a nice set of counters and cards. Next, get your hands on some spray glue. (Available at most craft stores and office supply stores) Use this to mount the components onto thick card stock or chipboard. This will make the parts easier to pick up and use, which generally creates a better over all experience. Should you wish, you can protect your many parts with a clear, self-adhesive, sheet of lamination. (Again available at most office supply stores). Plastic or metal miniatures can of course be used to replace the paper mini s we have supplied, so have fun looking for the right figure to match what you need. Getting Started Once you are ready to play, clear a space somewhere to set everything up and get ready to have some fun. First off you will need to hire a band of adventurers to send into the dungeon. As a general rule you will be given a set amount of gold to spend at the start of the game, based on the adventure you will run. (See the Adventure Book for that adventure for details on the amount of gold you will have to start the game as well as items and characters that are open for play) This gold can be spent as you see fit, on the various characters, items and equipment that you will need to complete the given goal for that adventure. Any gold not spent can be kept and counted for victory conditions, thus a wise player will try to get by with just what they need, keeping the rest of the gold for later use when you figure out whether you have won the game or not. Of course should you keep too much gold and under spend, you might find you have not given your adventurers enough support and they will fail, all dying in their quest for glory. Once you have bought all your characters and goodies, place before you the character cards for those characters and the item counters that they will be using. Place the item counters on the characters that carry use said items. 4

Last but not least, place the Master Adventure chart before you and get some 1D10 dice. You are now ready to play. Characters Dark Dungeon comes with several characters that can be played, you buying their services with your starting gold. One or more of these characters can be bought when you start the game, but only one of each can be taken. Thus you cannot enter the dungeon with six dwarven priests, but may only take one. Each character used in the game, and for that matter, most of the monsters and foes as well, use a series of stats that show how well they can interact in the game environment. Besides these stats, each character may have one or more special abilities that enhance their use. Each character has a base gold cost to purchase their service, which must be paid in full to gain their use. Common Stats Name Health Coat of the Character Trisha Mageborn Alignment Good Cost: 20 Gold Initiative 5 Movement Rate 5 Magic Special Abilities 1. Arcane Lore (Skill Roll +5) 2. May Use Light Weapons But No Armor 3. Knows 4 Arcane Spells, and Can Know Up to 3 Others 4. Has 14 Magic Points per Day Readied Item Readied Item Additional Items and Gear Combat Defense Items counter location Readied Items counter location 5

Stats Within the game there are a series of stats that show how well the character can interact with the game environment. These stats are shown on each of the character cards (As noted by the symbol below), and may increase or decrease as the game progresses. Combat (Star) This stat shows how well the character can hit others in battle. The higher the stat, the better chance the character has of hitting a foe. Defense (Circle) This stat shows how hard it is to hurt the character. The higher the stats, the harder it is to harm them in combat. Health (Heart) These stat shows not only how much damage the character can take in combat before they are slain, but also how resistant they are to poisons and other debilitating conditions. Magic (Burst) This stat shows how skilled the character is in the arts of magic and spell casting. The higher the stat, the more skilled the character is in the mystic arts. Magic Points Spells when they are cast cost magic points. This stat shows how many such magical points the character has available to them on any given day. Initiative This shows when the character will go in combat and may be used in some other situations. Special Abilities All characters in the game will have one or more special abilities, as listed on their character card. Each ability is described in detail in the character book. Alignment Each character playable in the game will come with a set alignment. This alignment does not effect how and what your character can do in the game, but generally offers you some guidelines as to their behavior. In most cases the character s alignment will come into play through the use of set spells, magical items and some situations as dictated by the Adventure Book you are using. Alignment cannot be changed, so think of what you want to play before buying that evil antihero. Dark and Light Points There may come a point in the adventure were character(s) may have to make a moral choice. The results of this choice will affect them throughout the rest of the adventure. When indicated by the Adventure Book, place a light or dark marker on a character(s) based on their actions within the game. These markers stay with the character(s) throughout the rest of the adventure, although a light marker will cancel out the effects of a dark one. 6

Example Freddo has gained a light marker for his brave actions in the last encounter. He now though, faces a dark choice and because of his actions now has received a dark marker. The dark marker will cancel all effects of one light marker, and thus both are removed. If he would have had two light markers in play when he received his dark marker, he would have instead reduced the total number of light markers on his character card by one. The Adventure Book you are using and the character descriptions will tell you what effects light and dark markers will have on characters and events within the game. Other Purchases Before the game starts, after buying your characters, you may also buy additional equipment, items and rations, as listed within the Adventure Book for that adventure. You may not bring in items or buy additional goodies from other Adventure Books, unless otherwise stated in that adventure. Each item, weapon and set of armor will have a counter. Place one of these counters for each item bought, on the character that will use it. There is no limit to what a character can carry, although they generally can only use one item at time. Example You can have a set of chain mail and plate mail, but you cannot wear both at the same time. Common sense should be used when dealing with what equipment can be used. Entering the Dungeon When you have bought your heroes and equipment, rations and what not, you are ready to enter the dungeon. First read the starting information provided with your Adventure Book for that adventure and engage any events and or encounter that it offers. Thereafter you will be offered choices as to directions and charts that you will be required to roll on. As the adventure continues on, you will continue to roll on these charts until you have completed the adventure or all of your characters have fled or have been slain. Once you have completed the adventure or lost all of your characters, the game end. Figure out your victor conditions and see how much glory you have gained. Threat Levels At various points in the adventure you may be told to increase the current threat level of the game. The threat level indicates the current danger that the characters may face, and or the progression of the adventure as a whole. The higher the threat level, the more dangerous the foes will be and the closer to the end of the adventure you are. Once a threat level has been achieved, it cannot be reduced, so you must you keep track of your current threat level so you know what do you on any given encounter. Record the current threat level on the Master Adventure chart as it changes. 7

Battle Tiles As you move about the dungeon, you will be told to lay down new Battle Tiles to show the current dungeon layout. Place, in the correct location, the newest Battle Tile as rolled on the adventure charts for that Adventure Book. Once a tile is laid down, it will remain in play until the character(s) move to a new Level within the dungeon. (Usually this also means a change in the current Threat Level) Once a new level has been reached, remove the old Battle Tiles from the play area and begin laying down new tiles as they are generated. Should a Battle Tile be generated that will cover another Battle Tile, said tile cannot be placed and the passage dead ends that that point. Should all possible passages come to a dead end before the character(s) have moved to a new level or before the adventure ends, the game comes to a end. You should figure victory points at that point and see how well they have done. Thus it is possible to run out of places to go within the dungeon and so you may fail to reach the adventure s completion. This reflects the character(s) entering the wrong place or just getting lost and incapable of achieving their goal. Note that the chamber shown has no exits and so is a dead end. As the passage continues on, so too can the adventure. See how this passage turned in on itself, cutting off this passage. You cannot lay a battle tile on top of an already active tile, and thus this passage can go no further, resulting in a dead end. 8

Freddo Markerlious Alignment Neutral Cost: 20 Gold Initiative 4 Movement Rate 4 Special Abilities 1. Mighty Blow (+1 to all Damage Delivered in Combat) 2. May Use Light, Medium or Heavy Weapons and Armor Readied Item Readied Item Additional Items and Gear 9
