THE QUARTER INCH PRESS January 2017 WWW. NORTHPARISHQUILTERS. WORDPRESS. COM North Parish Quilters, Union Congregational Church, 148 Haverhill Street, North Reading, MA 01864 We meet on the second Wednesday of the month Sept- June. Doors open at 6pm & the meeting starts at 7pm. North Parish Quilters President s Note January 2017 Hello Fellow Quilters, Welcome to 2017. Time has certainly flown by and once again we are coming upon our annual Charity Night. As you all know, charity is one of the cornerstones of North Parish Quilters. Any and all charity projects can be worked on. This year, Pat Winter and Jean Osburn will be hosting. The hall will open at 5:30 PM, so we can get extra time sewing. If you or your group do not have a charity project in mind, there will be kits available and quilts in various states of completion to work on. Our recent donation of the hats, gloves, scarves, lap robes and socks collected at the Holiday Tea was delivered to Bread of Life before Christmas. The director and staff of Bread of life was overjoyed by the donation. I look forward to seeing you on January 11, 2017 as we continue our annual tradition of sewing for charity. Susan Holsing President SNOW CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event that North Reading Schools are canceled on the day of a North Parish Guild Meeting, then the guild meeting is also canceled. However, if snow conditions become severe through the day, members will be notified by email by 3:00 pm on the day of the meeting. We ask that everyone assist with notifying our members of a cancellation. Members without email should contact another North Parish Guild Member. Thank you. 1

Membership There are currently 90 guild members. This includes 8 new members and a returning member. Membership lists will be emailed to members in January, and there will be some copies available for members who receive their newsletter by mail. Those members can see for a copy. Hole in the Wall Charity Update The Hole in the Wall Gang table always has kits available please come by and choose easy precut items to sew. Returning the completed items as soon as possible is appreciated and necessary to continue the process of a completed quilt for the kids. We also love and look forward to receiving your charity blocks, quilt tops, pillowcases and completed quilts. The JANUARY HOLE IN THE WALL GANG CHARITY NIGHT will begin early at 6:00 PM. Many varied projects will be available to choose from: blocks to make, rows to sew, tops to pin, plus pillowcase & bindings, etc. to work on individually or with friends. Something for everyone or you can bring your own Charity projects. Please bring your sewing machines, rotary cutters, rulers, pins, cutting mats, and extension cords, etc. Also, a couple of irons and ironing boards/ironing mats are needed. Any questions, please contact Pat @ paw306@aol.com as Marcia is jetting off and will be sitting poolside while we sew, sew, sew!!!!! Jean has two quilts available that need binding by hand or machine. If you would like to work on one during the charity night or take it home, please contact Jean as early as possible at jeanco_49 @ comcast.net and let her know if you want the binding to be attached ahead of time. Wishing you all a Happy & Healthy New Year!!! Marcia debrigard, Jean Osborn & Pat Winter 3

Animal Shelter Pillow Guidelines Since I am currently not able to do cutting it would be a great help if you cut your scraps into 2 pieces, including the batting. Long strips must also be cut because they ball up when laundered. If you want to make your own pillow bags the Cat pillows are 14 square and the Dog pillows are 14 square up to Fat Quarter size. I will also have bags ready to be filled at each meeting. I will take any unwanted fabric including cotton, poly and decorator fabric and use it to sew bags. I can also use old towels. I will deliver all of the completed pillows to the shelter. I am very grateful for the guild s response as the need is great. Also, reusing and recycling our scraps is good for the environment. Thank you, Janice Caporrella Yawkey Family Inn News Hello North Parish Members, Please consider making even one pillowcase for the next meeting and bring it to the January meeting. If you have any cheater panels, or small quilts you might have made and no longer want, someone will be happy to finish it and/or make it larger and turn it into a comfort quilt. I will continue to have kits available to take home at each meeting. There are bindings to be sewn on (machine is just fine) and machine quilting to be done. If you need batting for a quilt, call me prior to the meeting and I will bring the batting for your quilt. For those of you that already have quilts to work on, I will be accepting anything that is completed at the January meeting. Remember, Yawkey Family Inn will take quilts any size from 24 square up to king. They support babies from 3 months up to 18 years and also support families who meet their standards of poverty level in their country, which in many cases, are lower than ours. Your donations are very much appreciated, and if you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 781-646-1293. Sincerest thanks, RoseMary 4

Mystery Quilt I hope everyone is enjoying this holiday season. In January I'll be giving out clues 5 and 6. Happy Stitching. The "Caped Crusader" Fat Quarter Raffle The Fat quarter Raffle is a fun way to build up your stash. It is simple and easy. You do not even have to go to the store to buy a fat quarter. You can make your own from left overs or from your stash. For each fat quarter you bring in, you will receive one ticket (a maximum of 3 tickets per person). If your number is drawn, you receive all the fat quarters that were brought in that month. January s Fat Quarter Raffle theme is Bright Colors. Month January February March April May June Theme Bright Colors Pinks or Reds Juvenile Batiks Food Stars or Stripes How to make a Fat Quarter: A Fat Quarter measures 18 x 21 (approximately). Since a fat quarter is 18 wide, you can use a ½ yard of fabric from your yardage. Typical fabric width is 42 44 wide. Cut the width of your fabric in half. So, your ½ yard of fabric will yield two fat quarters. Please use good quality fabrics. 5
