Barker Genealogy Generation No. 1 1. Seth 1 Barker was born Abt. 1798 in Massachusetts, and died Unknown. He married Nancy Harriet (Harriet) Case, daughter of Rufus Case and Rachel Godard. She was born 10 May 1799 in Connecticut, and died Unknown. Notes for Seth Barker: The 1850 Federal Census seems to indicate Seth was born in Massachusetts (it was very hard to read; it looks like a shortened form of Massachusetts). Later records for his children indicate Seth was born in New York. Seth and his family were living in Steuben County, New York in 1853 when he and wife Harriet testified for her mother Rachel, who was trying to get a pension as a result of her late husband's service in the Revolutionary War. Son Henry's death certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Federal Censuses for New York - Steuben County (1820), Monroe County (1830), Steuben County (1850) Father in law Rufus' Revolutionary War pension file, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, Pension Number W.3655, Publication Number M804, National Archives and Records Administration Notes for Nancy Harriet (Harriet) Case: The 1850 Federal Census seemed to indicate that Harriet was born in Connecticut (it was very hard to read; it looks like a shortened form of Connecticut). Other records for her children indicate Harriet was born in New York. However, it is stated in her father's Revolutionary War pension file that Harriet was born in Connecticut, before her father moved the family to New York State. Son Henry's death certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Father's revolutionary War pension file, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, Pension Number W.3655, Publication Number M804, National Archives and Records Administration Children of Seth Barker and Nancy Case are: 2 i. Harriet M. 2 Barker, born Abt. 1825 in New York; died Unknown. Notes for Harriet M. Barker: 3 ii. Jane Barker, born Abt. 1827 in New York; died Unknown. Notes for Jane Barker: + 4 iii. Rufus Barker, born Abt. 1832 in New York; died Bef. 1900. 5 iv. Fedelin Barker, born Abt. 1834 in New York; died Unknown. Notes for Fedelin Barker: The name was a little hard to read on the 1850 Federal Census. It could have been Fedelis. 6 v. Chancy Barker, born Abt. 1838 in New York; died Unknown. 1 12 Jul 2008

Notes for Chancy Barker: + 7 vi. Henry Agustus Barker, born 20 Sep 1840 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York; died 09 Nov 1916 in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin. Generation No. 2 4. Rufus 2 Barker (Seth 1 ) was born Abt. 1832 in New York, and died Bef. 1900. He married Jane E. Abt. 1869. She was born Abt. Jan 1843 in Pennsylvania, and died Unknown. Notes for Rufus Barker: Rufus was apparently living close to his brother Henry in Plover, Wisconsin according to the 1870 Federal Census for Wisconsin. By the time of the 1880 Federal Census, he was living in Holton, Wisconsin. Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Portage County (1870), Marathon County (1880, 1900) Notes for Jane E.: For some reason, Jane was listed as Ellen in the 1870 Federal Census but Jane after that. According to the 1880 Federal Census, Jane's parents were born in Pennsylvania. Jane was listed as widowed in the 1905 Wisconsin State Census Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Portage County (1870), Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910) State Census for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1905) Children of Rufus Barker and Jane E. are: 8 i. Emma 3 Powers, born Abt. 1863 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. Notes for Emma Powers: Emma was listed as Rufus' step-daughter in the 1880 Federal Census Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Portage County (1870), Marathon County (1880) 9 ii. Eva Barker, born Abt. Oct 1869 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. Notes for Eva Barker: Eva was listed as a schoolteacher in the 1905 State Census for Wisconsin Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Portage County (1870), Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910) 10 iii. George Barker, born Abt. Jun 1872 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. Notes for George Barker: Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1880, 1900) 11 iv. Mabel Barker, born Abt. + 12 v. Seth Barker, born Abt. Jun 1877 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. 13 vi. Grace Barker, born Abt. 1884 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. Notes for Grace Barker: Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1900) 14 vii. Elizabeth Barker, born Abt. Sep 1886 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. Notes for Elizabeth Barker: Federal Censuse for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1900, 1910) 7. Henry Agustus 2 Barker (Seth 1 ) was born 20 Sep 1840 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, and died 09 Nov 1916 in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin. He married Sarah J. Sterling 1870 in Plover, Portage County, Wisconsin. She was born Nov 1851 in Wisconsin, and died Aft. 1916. Notes for Henry Agustus Barker: When Henry was young, he moved with his parents from New York to Plover, Portage County, Wisconsin. In 1871, he moved to a farm in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin, where he was a farmer until about 1904, when he moved to Abbotsford in Clark County, Wisconsin Henry died at home of a Cerebral Hemorrage. He is buried in Abbotsford Cemetery, in the Mayville Township of Clark County. Death Certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Obituary, The Colby Phonograph (Wisconsin), Nov 23, 1916, Vol XXXIX, No. 15, page 1 Marathon County, Wisconsin, Cemetery Inscriptions - An Every-Name Index, published by the Marathon County Genealogical Society, 1986 Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Portage County (1870), Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910) State Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1885, 1895, 1905) Daughter Kate's marriage Certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Notes for Sarah J. Sterling: According to the 1880 and 1900 Federal Censuses, Sarah's parents were born in Pennsylvania. According to the 1900 census, Sarah had given birth to 2 children (possibly 3; the number was hard to make out), 1 of them still living. Sarah may be buried with her husband in Abbotsford Cemetery, in the Mayville Township of Clark County, Wisconsin. It's not certain at this time if she's really buried there, as I've been unable to find her death certificate and obituary, and the tombstone with her name on it doesn't have a death date. Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Portage County (1870), Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910) Marathon County, Wisconsin, Cemetery Inscriptions - An Every-Name Index, published by the Marathon County Genealogical Society, 1986 Daughter Kate's marriage certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Child of Henry Barker and Sarah Sterling is: + 15 i. Kate Maud 3 Barker, born 21 Dec 1872 in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin; died 02 Sep 1926 in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. 3 12 Jul 2008

Generation No. 3 12. Seth 3 Barker (Rufus 2, Seth 1 ) was born Abt. Jun 1877 in Wisconsin, and died Unknown. He married Louise. She died Unknown. Notes for Seth Barker: Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910, 1920) Notes for Louise: Federal Census for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1910, 1920) Children of Seth Barker and Louise are: 16 i. Elmo 4 Barker, born Abt. 1910 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. Notes for Elmo Barker: Federal Census for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1910, 1920) 17 ii. Alice Barker, born Private. 18 iii. Marie Barker, born Private. 19 iv. Arnold Barker, born Private. 15. Kate Maud 3 Barker (Henry Agustus 2, Seth 1 ) was born 21 Dec 1872 in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin, and died 02 Sep 1926 in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota. She married Lawrence Kiehl 01 Jan 1891 in Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin, son of Jacob Kiehl and Anna Schwartz. He was born 21 May 1867 in Eden, Fond Du Lac County, Wisconsin, and died 21 Oct 1943 in Siren, Burnett County, Wisconsin. Notes for Kate Maud Barker: There are some conflicts as to where Kate was born. Her marriage certificate and her son Ward's birth certificate list her birthplace as Holton, Marathon County, Wisconsin, while her son Howard's death certificate says she was born in Abbotsford, Clark County, Wisconsin. There are also conflicts as to the year she was born. Her death certificate gives 1872, while a cemetery index gives it as 1873 and census sources give 1874. The 1900 Census lists Kate having had (given birth to) 4 children and 3 of them still living (at the time of the census). I'm not sure who the other child would have been. According to her death certificate, Kate died of Hodgkins Disease. The undertaker was the Crawford Mortuary in Duluth, Minnesota. Kate appears to be buried in Siren Lakeview Cemetery (also known as Lakewood Cemetery) in Siren, Wisconsin (where her husband is buried), according to the cemetery's index. Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910), Burnett (1920) Husband's death certificate, Burnett County, Wisconsin Marriage certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Siren Lakeview Cemetery index, Burnett County, Wisconsin Son Howard's death certificate, Burnett County, Wisconsin Son Ward's birth certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Death Certificate, St. Louis County, Minnesota Notes for Lawrence Kiehl: There's some confusion as to where Lawrence was born. His marriage certificate, his son Howard's death certificate, and several other sources say he was born in Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin; his own death certificate says he was born in Manitowac County, Wisconsin. His parents settled in Fond Du Lac County after coming from 4 12 Jul 2008

New York and never set foot in Manitowac; it's likely that the death certificate is wrong. Lawrence and Kate and their first 3 children were living with Kate's parents Henry and Sarah Barker in Holton, Wisconsin at the time of the 1900 Federal census. He was listed as head of the household in the time of the 1910 Federal Census for Holton. He and his family moved to Siren, Wisconsin at some point after that and were listed as living in Siren in the 1920 Federal Census. According to the census records and his death certificate, Lawrence was a farmer. According to his marriage record, he was a cheesemaker. Lawrence died from cancer of the Prostate Gland, which he had been suffering from for about a year. Lawrence is buried in Siren Lakeview Cemetary (also known as Lakewood Cemetery) in Siren, Wisconsin Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Fond Du Lac County (1870, 1880), Marathon County (1880, 1900, 1910), Burnett County (1920) State Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1895, 1905) Death certificate, Burnett County, Wisconsin Marriage certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Father's Civil War Pension File, National Archives Mother's obituaries, Wisconsin River Pilot (Wisconsin), August 18, 1908, page 1, and Wausau Daily Record Herald (Wisconsin), Aug 15, 1908, p2 Father's obituary, Wisconsin River Pilot (Wisconsin), March 29, 1904, page 4 Son Howard's death certificate, Burnett County Wisconsin Marriage Notes for Kate Barker and Lawrence Kiehl: Witnesses at their wedding: Fred Kestly (possibly a sibling of Julia Kestly Kiehl) and Eva M. Barker (possibly a relative of Kate) Marriage certificate, Marathon County, Wisconsin Children of Kate Barker and Lawrence Kiehl are: 20 i. Howard 4 Kiehl, born 12 Mar 1892 in Dorchester, Wisconsin; died 19 Nov 1927 in Siren, Burnett County, Wisconsin. Notes for Howard Kiehl: According to Howard's death certificate, he was single when he died and apparently had never married. Cause of death: Chronic Mycarddio (the word on his death certificate was hard to read; it could have been Mycardetio or Mycardelio or something else entirely). Something related to the heart. Howard is buried in Siren, Wisconsin Death certificate, Burnett County, Wisconsin Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County (1900, 1910), Burnett County (1920) Brother Ward's birth certificate, Marathon County, Wisco + 21 ii. Lawrence Kiehl, born 20 Dec 1898 in Siren, Burnett County, Wisconsin; died 07 May 1960 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana. + 22 iii. George Kiehl, born Sep 1899 in Wisconsin; died Aug 1983. + 23 iv. Norman Kiehl, born Abt. 1902 in Wisconsin; died Unknown. + 24 v. 26 vii. Beatrice Kiehl, born 28 Oct 1909 in Wisconsin; died May 1984 in Newbury Park, California. She married Leroy Finster; died Unknown. Notes for Beatrice Kiehl: Beatrice lived closed to her sister Henryetta in Burbank, California in their later years. The 1930 Federal Census lists Beatrice and Henryetta living as lodgers in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, working or studying as student nurses Federal Censuses for Wisconsin - Marathon County ((1910), Burnett County (1920) Federal Censuses for Minnesota - St. Louis County (1930) + 27 viii. Henryetta Kiehl, born 26 Jul 1911 in Siren, Burnett County, Wisconsin; died 09 Oct 1994 in Burbank, California. Generation No. 4 21. Lawrence 4 Kiehl (Kate Maud 3 Barker, Henry Agustus 2, Seth 1 ) was born 20 Dec 1898 in Siren, Burnett County, Wisconsin, and died 07 May 1960 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana. He married Amanda Zimmerman 28 Jan 1932 in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois, daughter of Richard Zimmerman and Mary Wolf. She was born 29 Jun 1901 in Edgar, Marathon County, Wisconsin, and died 11 Sep 1983 in Missoula, Missoula County, Montana. Notes for Lawrence Kiehl: Lawrence's WWI draft registration card lists his birth year as 1897 instead of 1898. No idea if he was actually drafted or not. Lawrence and Amanda were married in Waukegan, Illinois. They moved to Missoula, Montana in 1952 after visiting their son Richard, who was attending the University of Montana. According to Richard, Lawrence liked the place so much, he decided to move there. According to his son Richard, Lawrence had really bad arthritis and died of a combination of cortisone poisoning (used to treat the arthritis) and his heart giving out after years of smoking.
