The 4 Step Formula to Grow your Ranks on the Amazon Algorithm

How I Started In 2011 I had health issue that forced me into an early retirement at 27. In 2012 I finished a book I was writing for 3 years. Published in early April 2013 on KDP First month = $50 October 2013 Brought My Bride home from her dreaded J.O.B. Then later that month I cracked the code of connecting with my fan base and the algorithm (for bigger launches) I went from $1,800 in sept to $14,000 in Oct. And by December I was making $40,000/month To date I ve distributed more than 2 million books.

In 2014 My sales slumped 30 Day Drop Off I had to fight to stay on top I still made a large Six Figures BUT It was a constant battle of Write. Publish. Write. Publish. I GOT EXHAUSTED! I began to dream of a day that I didn t have to write and could still keep my sales up.

What I Tried. So I tried publicity. I spent over $20,000 on that. I thought maybe if I could launch my books higher on the algorithm it d be a slower ride down. I was wrong. Very wrong. I needed to focus on certain stick factors. I paid for more ads, had bigger promotions, but nothing gained traction. The only difference was that I was spending more.

So no matter what I did it seemed as if I d be stuck writing and publishing, fighting to keep the status quo of income and sales. I like to call it a ceiling in your books sales. And maybe you re experiencing it now. Where more time writing=more money Over time I tried to figure out exactly what aspect of my books Once I figured that out my next step was to grow my fan base so I could grow my launches. What has happened since then:

Let s Dig in!

Your #1 Goal Many self-publishing mentors suggest that your #1 goal in book marketing is to build an email list. This isn t entirely true. Your #1 goal as an author is to get ranked on the algorithm. Write that down, bold, and underline it Your email list is meant to help you rank on the algorithm and grow your career in a sustainable and scale-able way If you don t know how to stick to the algorithm your email list will do little for you, except spike higher during a promotion. After which you ll tank to the bottom of the algorithmic abyss where your book will struggle at the bottom of Amazon s sludge pile. If you send your email list to a page on your website... But if you send your subscribers to Amazon and stick to the algorithm... So the algorithm can give you sales well beyond the scope of your email list.

Algorithm Basics Everything in the Store is controlled by two variables An Hourly Rank -every hour amazon compares book sales to other books to make a sales rank And a 30 Day Rolling Average -Amazon takes your sales from the past 30 days and divides by 30 and compares to other titles to determine where you rank for visibility A single spike will cause you to rank high on the hourly sales rank, however you will not rank high on the 30 day rolling average. Why? Because amazon has a buffer in place to divide out the sales spike

The Buffer What used to work was to launch your book with a big spike in sales on day one. Then you prop your ranks for the rest of the time your book is at $0.99 That doesn t work any more due to an algorithm change. What happened was that in the physical store merchants were hiring shady launch companies to boost the visibility of their product. These companies worked like the Result Source of Amazon. They would help you buy your own product on a single day, then give you fake 5 star reviews. Then the merchants would ride the algorithm down until their sales were obliterated by 1 star reviews. After which they would rinse and repeat. Needless to say Amazon caught on, and changed the algorithm storewide to prevent it from ever happening again.

What Amazon Did Amazon put a buffer in place to stop one day spikes from being effective. If you start at a poor sales rank and burst in a day into a large amount of sales which should give a high sales rank, they will divided those sales by roughly half then spread it out over the 30 day algorithm. Amazon felt as if natural promotions would result in a trickle of sales. So for example if you went to blogs across the web and did facebook ads you d have a trickle of sales with small bursts. To amazon this proves a dedicated merchant who is continually attempting to bring external visibility to their product.

Trickle Power! So that s why the algorithm prefers a trickle over a single burst.

Visibility in Brief Most of your visibility will come from your keywords and categories In a simplified version: in order to stick on the algorithm you need to focus on the higher traffic, low competition keywords, and polish the aspects of your book that converts higher sales. We ll discuss more on that later

Where Your Book is Found In order to take advantage of the algorithm we need to understand how your book is found. All visibility is broken down into 2 categories (Hourly rank, and 30 day) so we ll break that down for you now. The visibility in the hourly is everything directly controlled by sales rank, such as:

Hourly Algorithm Bestsellers List Hot New Releases has to be within the first 30 days Populated with preorders Hint: Preorders are a great way to stay on this list longer. Movers and Shakers

30 Day Algorithm Popularity List Found through typical browsing on Amazon s main page Search Engine Keyword match + 30 day rolling average The closer your keywords the more likely you ll rank higher These provide the highest visibility among the 30 day rolling average group However there are more:

More 30 Day Visibility Also Bought ranking Customers also viewed Etc.

Other Places NOT Related to the Algorithm Top rated Your product shows up here because you have the highest overall rating with the most reviews. Sponsored Products Located in plain view by the also-boughts Also Located directly on the search page. Controlled by paid for ads targeting keywords ***A quick note here: If you bid low they work on a trickle basis. Not a ton of sales, but they perform. Eventually when enough authors jump on board and offer higher bids if will lose all effectiveness.

The Overall Top Visible Comes From Keywords Popularity List Bestsellers List Hot New Releases

In Order to Rank on the Algorithm You need to focus on what brings the visibility on the 30 day rolling average. Which is a slow boil followed by a spike The spike gives visibility on the sales rank areas of the store After which time you can either ride the algorithm down Or use facebook ads to hold onto those ranks a little longer

4 simple Steps to Ranking Higher The four steps are simple. We ll discuss each step in greater depth a little later. Step 1) Choose high traffic low competition keywords. Step 2) Choose one high ranking category and one medium/low ranking category Step 3) Polish the 6 conversion factors of your book (we ll explain in a moment) Step 4) Launch with the 30 day algorithm in mind

Paid Launch Strategies The strategy of today is the flip opposite of what used to work. Rather than a spike and trying to prop the ranks with a trickle we need to have a trickle before a burst. So this is how it should look:

Paid Launch Day one-day 5 Small blogs or facebook ads Day 6 Pour it out! Get your email list and as many large blogs as you can

What Will Happen: Your ranks will rise abruptly then you will sit somewhere lower on the algorithm Roughly on the 3 day to the 7 th day after your promotion your rank will max out and you ll begin to trend downward until your book finds a place to sit on the algorithm You don t want to do more promotions at this time or Amazon will buffer them out and you may sit lower on the algorithm in the long run. But with the right strategies in place you can stick at this *income generating* resting place on the algorithm for months before needing a new promotion. Then when you stagger your book s income streams you can grow your income. I ll show you the exact strategy for sticking to the algo s in a little while

How the Free Store Works The free store doesn t have a buffer. So you can take advantage of the algorithm best by having your spike on day one. However visibility has been reduced due to changes favoring Kindle Unlimited Free books on amazon are amazon s #1 competitor to Kindle Unlimited. Which one of those two will naturally win more visibility? The one that makes Amazon money So for this reason you need to prop your ranks until your promotion is over

How a Free Promotion Must Look Day One Biggest burst of sales focus as many of the largest book promotion sites here and your email list (places like freebooksy, Kindle Nation Daily, Book Sends, Book Gorilla, etc.) Day Two to Day Five At least one large promotion site or a couple small ones per day on each day But be careful with the smaller less known blogs as they tend to be over priced and under perform. Meaning that you ll be less likely to make your money back Focus on what promotion sites that know work!

How to Convert More Amazon Browsers into Paying Customers For those of you who have seen my free video series, I mention this there so we will be brief It is the Conversion factors of your book and sales page that grab the attention of random browsers Which are

The 6 Conversion Factors Your Cover Book Title Description Look Inside Sample (first 5-10 pages) Price point Reviews

Your Cover Should be eye candy It should appeal to your target audience Doesn t have to be expensive But if you have the money I HIGHLY recommend getting a top quality designer who has made covers for New York Times Bestsellers. For example: Designers at Reedsy.com or Rocking Book Covers Otherwise if you don t have money I started with fiverr. BUT this is what I did differently: I asked the vendor where they got the images from, then went and searched from the best one, gave him the image stock number and asked him to make that my cover It s like getting a premade only cheaper and with some light custom edits. My average cover cost me $25 back then But now I ve paid up to $700 because the quality was worth it.

Your Title Should be catchy and engaging. Something that will draw the interest of your target market And if you can help it: try to get a keyword woven in there cleverly. And most importantly DON T KEYWORD STUFF Just a cleverly woven keyword into the title like Witching you were here by Amanda m. Lee Can you guess the keyword? Yup it s witch

Description This is not a time to literally describe what your book is about This is a time to hook the reader. HOOK HOOK HOOK An epic description creates epic sales Adam Houge Write that quote down! And apply it.

Sample for Look Inside After the description this will be the first thing anyone reads from you. SO MAKE IT AWESOME Make it the best you ve ever written, and most importantly Hook them Hook them within the first sentence or paragraph, and the end of the first page, and at the end of the look inside feature Leave them hanging with enough interest that they must purchase the book to satisfy a burning curiosity.

Price point During a launch your book should be priced at $0.99 to get the most possible sales for the 30 day rolling average After your promotion raise your price slowly to avoid price shock If you re brand new then $2.99-$3.99 should be your price point If you re seasoned with a large fan base then you can easily go as high as $5.99 for individual titles and $9.99 for box sets It all depends on your genre! In a few genres it s hard to go above $2.99 and stick on the algorithm because of tough competition. If you decide to write to market, take that into account

Reviews Reviews can eliminate your visibility through negative feedback Or increase it through positive feedback This is for 2 reasons 1) Customers are reader the reviews and take them into account. A 1 star can result in fewer sales per day forcing you to drop off the 30 day algorithm. A 5 star increases probability that they will buy. 2) The second reason is that Amazon gives weight to reviews and determines your ranking from there

Review Visibility Many 1 stars at once will tank your ranking Amazon will give you less visibility And customers will see the overall rating before clicking your cover image and cringe. Many 5 stars at once does little for you The little it does is that customers see them and become more likely to buy which slowly raises your 30 day ranking But what it doesn t do is that Amazon won t give visibility to a large burst of 5 star reviews. Why?

Amazon! Why? It s due to the buffer that s in place to stop shady launch companies. Remember that I said they faked reviews as well. Reviews used to tie very intricately into your visibility Now 1 stars hold more weight than 5 stars BUT! Amazon does give weight to a trickle of 5 stars through time that mirrors your sales trend. Why? Because it appears organic. So what you need is a review strategy that helps you build legitimate 5 stars in a slow trickle over time. By convincing your fan base to leave a trickle of reviews during and after a promotion it will greatly enhance your ranking.

The 8 irrefutable laws of ranking higher and sticking longer on Amazon's algorithm (break these at your own risk)

The 8 Laws Law 1) Keywords must be high traffic, low competition Law 2) Categories must choose one high/medium and on medium/low Law 3) Thou shalt have an amazing cover! Law 4) You need A title that grabs your target audience Law 5) You need an epic description that hooks Law 6) You must hook your reader in the first 5 pages (preferably the first paragraph, then keep grabbing them with the story) Law 7) You Must have a review strategy to build ranking over time Law 8) You Need a good price point during launch, then to raise to an acceptable range depending on your genre.

What sticks to the algorithm? A highly appealing product in a high traffic genre That balances across the 8 concepts we just described.

What Leads to a Bestseller? A Highly Appealing Product With a Lot of Traffic At Once

The 4 SIMPLE Steps to Stick on the Algorithm Step 1) Take the time to find appropriate keyword before launch Step 2) Choose appropriate categories One high, on low for optimum visibility. Step 3) Polish the 6 conversion factors. Get reviews by sending out your ARCs (as you know), then have a good review strategy in place to get a trickle of legitimate 4 and 5 stars for during and after launch. Step 4 a) For paid promo: Launch with a slow boil leading to a burst (if large audience) or sandwich into 2-3 day promo period for small audience Step4 b) For free promo: launch hard on first day and prop up ranks for the remainder of days.

The 4 Steps to Stick Step 1) Keywords

How do you know High Traffic keywords? What phrase or keyword would your target audience use to find your book? Type it in the search bar Then look at the sales ranks of the first 10 books. If they are relatively high (20k or better), and the number of books in the results are relatively low (50k or less for the keyword) you found a winner If the ranks are 5k for 2-3 books and 500k sales rank for the rest, then the keyword likely has little traffic, and the 5k books are getting traffic from else where.

The 4 steps to Stick Step 2) Categories

What do you choose? Categories determine what bestseller list you ll land on. So research the lists. If the bestseller lists of the categories you choose have the 100 spot at 5k sales rank and 1k sales rank. You ll never get the visibility if you can t rise above 5k sales rank. And if your promotion gets you above 5k you ll lose all visibility as soon as your rank sinks below 5k, and you ll fall like a rock. The high ranked categories get a lot of customer views however So choose one with 5k in the 100 spot And another with maybe 50k in the 100 spot

The 4 Steps to Stick Step 3) The 6 conversion factors We already went over what they were and how to polish them. But you need all 8 of these things in place before your first promotion in order to stick on the algorithm Again they are: Keywords, categories, title, cover, description, the first 5 pages of your book, reviews, and price point Afterward comes the launch which helps gain more visibility on the 30 day rolling average. which we discussed already.
