We have have some pleasurable outings and camp-outs. Our year commenced with Smiths Crossing and the Bucca area, then Baffle Creek and our first camp-out to Eurimbula NP. We enjoyed a day outing to the Goodnight Scrub NP followed by camp-outs to Cooloola NP and Bania NP. Our August outing was to Dr Mays Crossing and a few of us camped in Nour Nour NP in September. Our proposed ferry ride down the Burrum River was cancelled due to the health of the operators so we went to Norval Park instead and saw 97 species of birds. November saw us at Garnetts Lagoon with welcome help from John Knight. We visited a woodland area and Mathieson s Bird Hide and saw hundreds of waders including one with a leg flag from Alaska in 008. During the year several members made private weekend campouts to various areas around the district and recommended areas for future club camp-outs. Some lucky members had overseas trips to Sabah and Madagascar and Mauritius. We had a few new members and and visitors from interstate plus we always welcome our Hervey Bay and Maryborough friends to our outings. They contribute a lot to our bird sightings and help beginners willingly. During the year I had the honour of representing our club at the BOCA Forum held at Leeton NSW. I gave a presentation on the birds of the Wide Bay and hope it enlightened other birdwatchers of the wonders we have in our district. It was good to hear how other clubs are dealing with birdwatching throughout Australia and to learn of the future possible merger of BOCA with Birds Australia. I urge our members to be sure to vote and I support the amalgamation. I would like to thank the retiring secretary Annie Quested for the work she has done for the last two years. As well as the secretarial duties Annie has regularly had notices in our local press which has introduced several new members. I thank Eric Zillmann for being our patron and for all his knowledge he so readily shares. I would like to thank our treasurer Elaine Lynch for her work on the all important finances of our club. I also would thank those who did volunteer work with week day activities to promote birdwatching. Little Bronze Cuckoo by Potta We have worked successfully with Burnett Mary Regional Group doing wader surveys at Bundaberg Port and Barubbra Island and thanks to the leadership of Sue Sargent and Cathy and John Gatley we enjoyed the work enormously. BMRG donated $3000 for our efforts and we passed it on to BOCA headquarters. BOCA were extremely grateful for our contribution. Some of our members have had health issues during the year and I hope the new year brings a chance for them to come birdwatching with us again. What for the new year? Let s all try to make our club better in as many ways as one can. Let s visit areas we haven t before or ones we haven t for a few years. OUTING TO NORVAL PARK TH OCTOBER 00 NORVAL PARK ALWAYS SATISFIES We started in the rainforest, then went to the causeway where we saw several waders. Highlights for some were Brolgas flying over. 50 Royal Spoonbills landed in the nearby ponds. A pair of Red-Capped Plovers were nesting near the road.we moved to the beach to see Black Noddies, Gannets, and terns. Dollarbirds by Carl Moller We came back to a side road to see several Rose-crowned Fruit- Doves including one on the fence wire. A Brown Cuckoo-Dove posed for all the photographers for some time. A Little Bronze- Cuckoo did a couple of fly bys. GARNETTS LAGOON, RIVER HEADS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8TH JOHN KNIGHT leader LOTS OF WATER CHANGED THE LAGOON John took us around the lagoon. It was much wetter than previous years so last year s rarities were missing but we still saw 90 species. We had lots of wader sightings and the wetland species. Jacanas, Wood Sandpipers, a Lathams Snipe, Marsh Sandpipers and 3 Brolgas We went to the bird hide overlooking the Great Sandy Straits.
