Ease of Doing Business: India jumps 23 notches, now at rank 77 India jumped 23 positions in the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business Index and is now ranked 77 out of 190 countries in 2018, a development that could help the country attract more foreign investments. It was ranked 100 in 2017, making a leap of 30 places. The World Bank released its latest Doing Business Report (DBR, 2019) on 31 st October in New Delhi. New Zealand topped the list of 190 countries in ease of doing business, followed by Singapore, Denmark, and Hong Kong. The United States is placed eight and China has been ranked 46th. Neighboring Pakistan is placed at 136. Growth of 8 infrastructure sectors slows down to 4.3% in September Growth of eight infrastructure sectors slowed down to 4.3% in September this year, the lowest in the last four months, as production of crude oil and natural gas declined. Previously, the lowest growth rate was in May 2018 when the core sectors expanded at 4.1%. NIIF acquires IDFC Infrastructure Finance The National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) has acquired IDFC Infrastructure Finance (IDFC-IFL), an infrastructure debt fund. This acquisition is the first investment from NIIF s strategic fund. The acquisition is subject to approval from RBI and customary closing conditions, it said. IDFs are investment vehicles for channeling investment into India's infrastructure sector. Karnataka launches Samruddhi scheme for aspiring SC/ST rural entrepreneurs Samruddhi, the rural entrepreneurship programme for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) was launched recently by Priyank Kharge, Minister for Social Welfare, Government of Karnataka. India ranks 65 in Global Passport Index, Singapore with the most powerful passport Among a total of 199 countries, Singapore has acquired the first position along with Germany with a visa-free score of 165, making Singapore the country with the 'most powerful passport'. Indian passport was in the 65 th position in its latest ranking. The ranking which is based on the passports' visa-free score, improved nine-notches since 2017.
