specifications, installation instructions and operation instructions page 9 of 12 Model BR-3 SPECIFICATIONS Operating Voltage: 115V, 1ph, 60Hz other voltages and frequencies available Motor Power: 375 Watts 0.5 hp Overall Dimensions: 28 x 20 x 17 in 711 x 508 x 432 mm Weight: 107 lbs 48.5 kg INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT: ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE ELEC- TRIC POWER SUPPLY BEFORE PERFORMING ANY REPAIRS OR MAINTENANCE. 1 Place the BR-3 in a convenient location away from the dehider assembly/repair area. 2 Plug the 115V/60Hz models into a standard 115V wall outlet. All wall outlets must be grounded. 3 Check grinding wheels for possible damage. Do not use if grinding wheel(s) are damaged. 4 Stand away from the front of the BR-3 and run the BR-3 for 1 minute before using. 5 Ensure that the motor rotation is correct: the grinding wheel (item 3, page 5) rotates to the right. 6 Use a dust collector while dressing the formed grinding and grinding wheels. OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT: ALWAYS CHECK NEW GRINDING WHEELS FOR POSSIBLE DAMAGE. DO NOT USE DAMAGED GRINDING WHEELS. ALWAYS WEAR CUT PROTECTIVE GLOVES WHILE OPERATING THE MACHINE AND HAN- DLING THE BLADES. Note: always keep dehider blades as a matched set. 1 HOLLOW GRIND WHEEL DRESSING. Refer to page 6, Cup Wheel Dresser Assembly. 1.1 Advance wheel dresser (item 14) two or three thousands of an inch by turning hand knob (item 16) clockwise. (approx. 1/4 turn). 1.2 Ensure that wheel dresser (item 14) is snug; if not, adjust set screw (item 1) accordingly. 1.3 Turn on the motor. 1.4 Bring the dresser lever (item 2) toward the grinding wheel (item 3, page 5) and let the diamond head of the dresser pass across the face of the grinding wheel slowly. 1.5 Turn off the motor. 2 HOLLOW GRIND. Refer to page 7, Hollow Grind Lever Assembly. 2.1 Remove the blade retaining flange (item 16) from the blade holder shaft (item 13) by pulling the locking ring (item 12). 2.2 Place one dehider blade, with the hollow side facing the grinding wheel (item 3, page 5), on the blade retaining flange (item 16). 2.3 Re-insert the blade retaining flange (item 16) on the blade holder shaft (item 13). 2.4 Turn on the motor. 2.5 Slide the hollow grind lever (item 29) toward the grinding wheel (item 3, page 5) with hand pressure and at the same time rotate the crank handle (item 32) at approximately 100 rpm. Do not grind any longer than 5 seconds. 2.6 Examine the blade and repeat step 2.5 until the hollow grind extends to the tip of the dehider blade teeth. 2.7 Repeat steps 2.1-2.6 with the remaining blade.

operation instructions Model BR-3 page 10 of 12 2.8 Turn off the motor. 3 GRINDING WHEEL DRESSING. Refer to page 6, Formed Wheel Dresser Assembly. 4.5 Turn on the motor. 4.6 Set depth of cut. Use adjusting screw assembly (item 5) to obtain roughly a 0.08 inch (2 mm dub). Before grinding each set of blades, you must dress the preformed wheel. 3.1 Rotate the index gear (item 3) clockwise one tooth. 3.2 Lift handle (item 15) to engage the template screw (item 2) against the groove of the wheel forming template (item 14, page 5). Each pass of the dresser across the face should take about three seconds. 4 DUBBING. Refer to page 8, Blade Grinding Index Assembly. 4.1 Loosen hand knob (item 28) and raise indexing lever (item 24) until index mounting base (item 43) will go up no further. Tighten the hand knob. 4.2 Remove knob assembly (item 1) and retaining flange (item 2). Place a matched set of blades on index gear shaft (item 3) with hollow sides together and all teeth matching exactly at the tips of the teeth. Re-install retaining flange and tighten the knob assembly. 4.3 Rotate the blade grinding index assembly toward the formed grinding wheel (item 17, page 5). Bring one of the teeth in the central portion of the blades in contact with the formed grinding wheel. If necessary, use the fine adjust dowel pin (item 18) to line up the tip of the tooth exactly with the bottom of the formed grinding wheel. After the blades have been aligned in the formed grinding wheel, the dubbing should be completed with no farther movement of the fine adjustment dowel pin. 4.4 Tighten the knob assembly (item 1) very securely to prevent any movement of the blades during dubbing. 4.7 Dub each tooth with a short jabbing motion to avoid burning the teeth. 4.8 Turn off the motor. 5 SHARPENING. Refer to page 8, Blade Grinding Index Assembly. When re-conditioning badly worn blades, it may be necessary to redress with the diamond to reform the formed grinding wheel before the last grind. See Step 3, GRINDING WHEEL DRESSING. 5.1 Place one dehider blade of the set on the index gear shaft (item 3). The hollow grind side of the blade must face up. 5.2 Place the retaining flange (item 2) on the blade, then tighten knob assembly (item 1). 5.3 Loosen hand knob (item 28) and lower index lever (item 24) until index mounting base (item 43) will go down no farther. Tighten hand knob (item 28). 5.4 Line up a tooth in the central portion of the blade with the blunted portion exactly centered in the bottom of the formed grinding wheel. 5.5 Tighten the knob assembly (item 1) securely. Use the fine adjust dowel pin (item 18) if necessary to exactly center the tooth after final tightening. Note: after the blade has been aligned in the formed grinding wheel, the sharpening should be completed with no farther movement of the fine adjust dowel pin.

operation instructions and maintenance instructions page 11 of 12 Model BR-3 5.6 Tilt the blade index assembly away from the formed grinding wheel and then start the motor. 5.7 Sharpen all teeth the same amount, with the same depth of cut, using many very short, jabbing motions to avoid burning teeth. 5.8 Grind teeth until 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) width of blunt area is left on each tip. This is the exact amount of dubbing necessary for proper skinning. 1.1 Back off wheel dresser assembly (items 14-16, page 6). 1.2 Place a wrench on formed wheel lock nut (item 19). 1.3 Remove hex nut (item 1). Left hand thread. 1.4 Remove retaining flange (item 2). 1.5 Remove grinding wheel (item 3). 1.6 Check all items for wear and replace if necessary. 1.7 To assemble, reverse steps and procedures 1.2-1.5. 5.9 Turn off the motor. 5.10 Repeat steps 5.1-5.9 with the remaining blade from the set. 6 DEBURRING. Refer to page 7, Hollow Grind Lever Assembly. 6.1 Remove blade from the blade grinding index assembly and place it on the hollow grind retainer flange (item 16). 6.2 Follow steps 2.1-2.7, except the grinding time should be 1/10 th of a second. MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT: ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE ELEC- TRIC POWER SUPPLY BEFORE PERFORMING ANY REPAIRS OR MAINTENANCE. IMPORTANT: ALWAYS CHECK NEW GRINDING WHEELS FOR POSSIBLE DAMAGE.
