Information flow in Construction Industry How documents are shared in construction industry in a single project Red dots: People in the construction company Blue dots: External companies/people creating or using data Lines between dots are connections when documents are shared Thicker lines represent more frequent connections www.box.com: Mapping the Information Economy: A Tale of Five Industries

Information flow in different Industries Software Construction Financial Services In the construction business companies are the most collaborative in working with people outside their business Challenges from the collaboration point of view www.box.com: Mapping the Information Economy: A Tale of Five Industries

Discussion Topics About BIM and openbim in Civil Engineering&Construction Industry About Standards and Ongoing Activities on Infra side Trimble CEC Road to BIM through Open Collaboration Connected Construction Summary

About BIM and OpenBIM

What is BIM/openBIM? There is not really a clear consensus of what BIM is Many presentations still includes a What is BIM -section Most common perception of people is that BIM is a software or a process, a model,... The One that I like is: BIM is a Technology that enables transition from human readable data to machine readable data Drawings are graphics (appearance important) BIM data consists of objects that contain geometry and attribute information (structure important)

What is BIM/openBIM In BIM/openBIM we have a possibility to: Choose the tools for our needs Transfer data between tools by utilizing Digital Workflow in the lifecycle Develop very specific tools independent of any platform Use open standard data formats (IFC, CityGML, LandXML, ) for communication So, for me today s BIM means that it is always also open for digital data flow

About Standardization and Ongoing Development Activities

What people may think about standardization work?

Standards Development is not easy, Without saying anything about implementing or taking them into use in real-life project work But it is extremely important!!! Requires collaboration on a global basis Requires consensus by many organizations Requires give and take Requires certified, repeatable process But in any case, there s many of them going on

To Manage the Whole Lifecycle Information Requires Interaction with Multiple Stakeholders & Datasources In Sweden IFC alignment is a requirement from construction Has anyone ever estimated the annual cost / potential of lacking interoperability in and between BIM and GIS on the global level? IFC is used by Norwegian & Finnish Road Authorities in Bridge management CityGML & InfraGML based data provides important source information for Civil projects InfraGML 1.0 * has recently been published and work on 2.0 is starting *InfraGML is one of Landinfra encodings Terrain models & Machine Control data is often in LandXML files

Examples of Stakeholders Infrastructure@buildingsmart.org Common Schema IFC Road Swedish Transport Agency, Trafikverket, KICT, Korea Finnish Transport Agency Swedish Transport Agency, Trafikverket Austroads, Australia Finnish Transport Agency, Liikennevirasto CRBIM China Railway BIM Alliance German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI) IFC Bridge APLITOP, Spain French MiNnD project APOGEA Consultores SL, Spain German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMVI) China Railway BIM Alliance CRBIM Swedish Transport Agency Trafikverket, Autodesk U.S. American Association of State Highway French MiNnD project and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) InfraRoom is looking for stakeholders to contribute to the Finnish Transport Agency projects and to review and provide comments on IFC reports buildingsmart Japan

Digital Construction Road Map 2020 in Germany The role and importance of Managing Data is in the central focus in Germany Data Drops between the stages define, what data needs to go to the next step This means that contractor sets requirements for the implementation model and asset owner for the maintenance model Finally the asset owner will benefit the most of the information portfolio enriched by the earlier phases A Schematic Illustration of the German BIM Process / A picture from the Road Map for Digital Design and Construction by Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure

And not only the Standars,.....nor the new technology solve interoperability problems, but people and updated processes are needed to make any changes to happen People / organization and processes are needed to take new technology in the use Image according Gulnaz Aksenova Sisyphus by Mongoose

Trimble CEC Road to BIM through Open Collaboration and Connected Construction

Trimble Connect a BIM Level 2 platform Brings together data from different industries to the common viewing environment Common viewing environment allows also to markup and comment data and to communicate between stakeholders Combines project data from different domains, from initial data to construction Geospatial Civil Buildings Trimble Connect Trimble Connect allows seamless collaboration between stakeholders using their software and hardware tools of choice

Connected Construction Trimble Quadri, BIM Level 3 Data management system Our Target To be #1 in the BIM for Infrastructures and provide BIM Level 3 Collaboration platform for Civil Engineering & Construction data management needs in the digital Connected Construction This Enables Open Collaboration Connected Digital Workflow Digital Constructible BIM Models

The Trend... We see a change in the mindset: from a project oriented BIM, where the model is created for one project to Enterprise BIM, a business centric model what is kept alive and updated continuously to be the Digital Twin of the physical thing like the whole or a part of road network The digital twin can use real-time data and other data-sources to enable learning, reasoning, and better decision making

Information and Work Processes have a Graphical Location in the Digital Twin Anyone looking at the digital twin can see crucial information how the physical thing is doing out there in the real world!!!
