The river lulls one to sleep and is a positive force, for it is golden. It is also associated with great achievements, e.g. the pyramids in Egypt. It is associated with freedom. In contrast, imagery used in Runagate Runagate has the potential not only to help but also to harm. The River Jordan can be a source of freedom, but it can also be a source of death. Likewise, while the bright moon can help escaping slaves see where they are going, it also may expose them to the slavers pursuing them. The leaves are scary and the air is ghosted. PTS: 20 23. ANS:
Hawthorne was haunted by his Puritan past, including a grandfather who was a judge at the Salem Witch Trials. This is evident in his short story Young Goodman Brown, which is set during the Puritan era. His depiction of the past is a version of historical fiction used only as a vehicle to express common themes of ancestral sin, guilt and retribution. He portrays Young Goodman Brown as going from being confident in his ability to choose good rather than evil to someone who can no longer believe that good always prevails. He becomes a profoundly disillusioned man who sees wickedness everywhere, including in those closest to him. PTS: 20 24. ANS: The missing lines in The Tyger indicate that Blake is posing a question: If God created both the lamb (goodness) and the tiger (evil), how can He be good? This question is one that humankind has struggled with throughout recorded time. PTS: 6 25. ANS: Both authors begin their stories before sunset. In both stories, this is important because while it is daylight, both protagonists believe the world is a good place. However, as night falls, each comes face to face with the knowledge that the world can be evil. They both use the contrast between day and night to indicate that people and, more specifically, life are not always as they appear. PTS: 10
