RPSofV Certificate (2003). Acquired for $470 at our auction of 19/7/2003. [The Perf 11 values were issued after Federation and were therefore not valid for postage] VICTORIA - 1879-1900 Ultra-High Values Local collector Nick Holness formed by far the most extensive collection of this highly visual series. His Gold Medal winning exhibit was sold intact for $38, at a Melbourne auction in June 1988. The buyer has removed only 6 of 76 pages so what is offered here again, 23 years later, is essentially Nick's beautifully presented Gold Medal exhibit, which was also awarded Felicitations of the Jury for Research. Dr Geoff Kellow RDP, at page 246 of his exceptional work on the stamps of Victoria states "The three high values are a fascinating and quite complex study. This complexity arises from two causes (i) the use of three different printing processes; and (ii) printings were small and frequent to maintain as small a stock as practicable to safeguard against theft." To put the face value of these stamps into perspective, in 1913 the Commonwealth Stamp Printer, JB Cooke, was paid 170 for a year of service, which was 5 less than the face value of one set of the Ultra-High Values! Although not a single postally used example exists - or even could exist - these stamps that were first issued in 1879 were valid for postage from 1/1/1884 and so are listed in the Stanley Gibbons catalogue. We have adopted their arrangement, supplemented by Geoff Kellow's more detailed record of the printings, and Nick Holness's personal researches. We believe this is the first time that a collection of these stamps has been offered at auction on a specialised basis. Consequently, catalogue values from Gibbons & Elsmore Online have been ignored as both listings - especially Dave Elsmore's - are too simplistic. Here then, is a second-time-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire material from a truly remarkable collection. 750 Ex Lot 640 640 O The balance of Nick Holness's beautifully presented exhibit pages with a useful range of stamps comprising First Recess Period 25 x4, 50 x5 & 100 x5; Litho 25 x38 including a complete reconstruction of Stone 4, 50 x8 & 100 x3; Second Recess Period 25 x7 & 100 x4; and Typo 50 CTO x2; a number of watermark varieties noted, condition generally fine to very fine. The purchaser could nominate whether to have the stamps CTO'd or endorsed/ handstamped "Specimen". 1879-1885 First Recess Printed Period The recess-printed stamps - in both issue periods - were printed directly from the dies and issued as "sheets" of one, giving rise to the world's very first miniature sheets. However, he has formed a number of quality studies of other Victorian subjects and we are pleased to present several of them here. 712 P A Lot 712 1884 THE 'STAMP STATUTE' SERIES: Although the Stamp Statute series were issued in 1870, they were valid for postage only from 1/1/1884. Mint examples are scarce to rare and most used examples have faked cancellations or have had fiscal cancels removed & bogus (mostly) or postal cancels applied. Covers are almost invariably philatelically inspired. No further printings were made in 1884 and the remainders were destroyed in 1885. The last important offering of these stamps was Francis Kiddle's collection, sold at a Melbourne auction in May 2005. 1d progressive die proof ('STAMP' uncleared) exceptional impression in dark blue on white wove paper (43x 60 mm), initialled "WB 1.11.70" (= William Bell), a couple of minor tonespots on the reverse don't detract from this delightful proof. Ex Francis Kiddle: acquired for $2587. [Kellow states that the only other recorded example - not initialled - is in the Royal Collection] 3,

Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: 52 WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Railway Stamps We are pleased to offer the award-winning collection formed by Dr Derek Pocock of Perth. This is by far the most extensive collection of this scarce material that we know of being offered at auction. It must be understood that used stamps usually have often significant faults. As Derek notes on his title page, "Railway stamps were totally functional with no thought for the collector, a feature of great attraction to the purist". It is thus noteworthy that a high proportion of Derek's material is in fine to very fine condition. As a group, they represent an excellent basis for a serious library of Australian Colonies/States titles. The majority are in new or in as-new condition. The estimates are deliberately conservative: for those books that are in-print titles, the estimates are generally half the retail prices. The auction catalogues include some of the greatest collections ever formed of Australian Colonies material. Several of the catalogues are rarities in their own right. 1040 L A "The Revenue Stamps of South Australia" (2006) & "The Parcel Stamps of South Australia" (2008) both by Martin Walker; "Revenue & Railway Stamps of Tasmania" by Craig & Ingles (1978); and "Handbook of Victorian Revenue Stamps" by Bill Craig (1999).
