GIMP WEB 2.0 ICONS WEB 2.0 ICONS: PAPERCLIP OPEN GIMP or Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Completed Project Step 1: To begin a new GIMP project, from the Menu Bar, select File New. At the Create a New Image dialog box, select a size and background color for your new image. I selected 500 x 500 with a white background. You will need to click the + sign beside Advanced Options to expand the menu. Click the Ok button. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 1 of 7

A new canvas displays in the GIMP document window, information about the new image displays in the Title Bar, and a layer named Background displays in the Layers palette. Step 2: At the bottom of the Layers palette, click the Create New Layer icon and at the Create New Layer dialog box, name the layer paperclip. By default, the Layer Fill Type will be transparency. Click the OK button. A new paperclip layer displays above the Background layer in the Layers palette. Step 3: From the Menu bar, select View Show Grid to display a grid on the canvas. You may also want to select View Snap to Grid have each of the anchor points that you create automatically position at the top, bottom, left, and right of the tiny grid squares. Step 4: Click the Zoom down arrow and select 200% to magnify the size of the canvas. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 2 of 7

Step 5: Click the Paths Tool in the Toolbox. You will be creating eight anchor points that form the shape of the paperclip. Starting with Anchor #1, click on a square intersection. Step 6: To add the curves, click in the center between Anchor Point #2 and Anchor Point #3 and drag up to form a curve. Because you have the Snap to Grid option turned on, the curve automatically snaps to the top of the square grid. Repeat for Anchor #6 and Anchor #7. You may want this anchor to only go half way to the top of the square. Repeat for Anchor #4 and Anchor #5, but pull the line down. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 3 of 7

Step 7: From the Toolbox, change the FG color to medium gray (I used a4a4a4) and the BG color to black. Step 8: With the paperclip layer selected in the Layers palette, from the Menu bar, select Edit Stroke Path and at the Stroke Path dialog box, click the Line width: down arrow and select 4.0 and select the Solid color option. Click the Stroke button. The paperclip is now a 4-pixel gray shape. Step 9: With the paperclip layer selected in the Layers palette, right click and select Alpha to selection to select the paper clip. Step 10: Right click on the paperclip layer in the Layers palette and select Duplicate Layer. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 4 of 7

A new layer named paperclip copy displays above the paperclip layer in the Layers palette. Step 11: From the Menu bar, click Select Grow and at the Grow Selection by dialog box, type 3 and click the OK button. Marching ants display 3 pixels around the image. Step 12: From the Menu bar, select Edit Fill with BG color. The image is filled with black fill. Step 13: In the Layers palette, drag the paperclip copy layer below the paperclip layer. Step 14: Right click the "paperclip" layer and select Merge Down to merge the two layers. Step 15: In the Layers palette, double click the paperclip copy layer name and type paperclip. Step 16. From the Menu bar, click Select None to remove the marching ants. Step 17: From the Menu bar, click View Show Grid to remove the gridlines from the canvas. Step 18: From the Toolbox, select the Crop Tool and draw a rectangle around the paperclip image and click in the center of the image to accept the crop. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 5 of 7

Step 19: To view the actual size of the paperclip, click the Zoom down arrow and select 100%. To make the paperclip smaller, from the Menu bar select Layer Scale Layer and at the Scale Layer dialog box, click the pixels down arrow and select percent. Click in the Layer Size Width: text box and type 50 and press the Enter key. The height automatically changes to 50% as well because the chain link (scale in proportion) is locked. The image is one-half its original size. Step 20: With the paperclip layer selected in the Layers palette, from the Menu bar, select Image Autocrop Image to remove the extra white background from the image. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 6 of 7

Step 21: Save the image in the \PortableApps\GIMP\icons\images folder as paperclip_icon_mm_dd_yy with an.xcf extension (replacing the mm_dd_yy with the current month, day, and year). Step 22: Click the Visibility icon beside the Background layer in the Layers palette to make the background of the image transparent. Step 23: Save the image again as paperclip_icon_mm_dd_yy with an.png extension. At the Save as Windows icon dialog box, click the Export button and then the Save button. Step 24: Select File Close to close the project and click the Close button on the Document Window to close GIMP. Web 2.0 Icons: Paperclip Icon Web 2.0 Icons Page 7 of 7
