CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the writer explains about background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key terms. 1.1 Background of Study Literature is creative writing. Studying literature is to get more knowledge. Literature is the expression of the ideas, feeling, or the event that happened in human life. It can increase the knowledge and experience about human s problem. In the literature people can find pleasure in expressing emotion and situation, whether real or imaginary. Literature is collection of book that used a beautiful language, and artistic. The meaning of beautiful language is using a good structure, sensitive, gratify, good content, and perfect. And then, artistic means which has substance such as to fear, commotion, and pleasant etc. But, not all every written document becomes literature. According to Mario Klarer (1962) literature is referred to as the entirety of written expression, with restriction that not only every written document can be categorized as literature in the more exact sense of the word. Besides, according to Jone Jr (1965, in Hartiningsih, 2002), literature is another simply way to experience the world around us through our imagination. Literature becomes a great human treasure because it gives the readers many information, knowledge, experience and pleasure. Then, literature is easy way to get 1

2 experiences and information about the world with imagination without going around the world. In fact, life is very dynamic and much of information for who are interested in exploring the topic from daily life to be an amazing work. Here, the researcher wants to concentrate on the work of literature. One of the forms of it is novel. Novel is fictitious, it credited as the characters and the situation imaginary. According to Wellek in Clara Reeve (1985: 282) novel is a picture of a real life and manners of the time when it is written. Novel contains the factual event that really happen in daily life or only the imaginative of the author obsession on her life. Likewise, novel describes about daily life and characteristic which is more detail from the period when the people write the novel. Besides, novel has a connection with the real life because it reflects many things around us such as people, places, events and other. Novel has some important elements, there are: plot, character, setting, conflict, point of view, theme and subject matter. People can express their imagination by writing the novel. There are many novels that full imagination in the world. One of them is New Moon which was written by Stephenie Meyer. She creates many aspects in this novel which can make people believe that it really happened. The reason why the researcher analyzes New Moon is it represents the condition, conflicts and situation of human life. Next, it is very interesting to analyze because it make the readers can absorb the problem solving from the characters or event in this novel useful for solving their own problems.

3 Then the researcher is interested in analyzing loneliness because it has functions such as to give sketch about the real life condition, conflicts and situation of the story. Moreover, it becomes backdrop of the conflict in the story which makes the readers very interested. In addition, it is able to bring the readers in the story because it makes the readers as really feel or experience how the way defend and struggle to look for the true love in life which is experienced of the main character in New Moon. Here, the researcher wants to show Isabella Swan s loneliness, the cause of her loneliness, and how the ways she solves her loneliness. Therefore, the researcher is interested in doing a research with the title: An Analysis on Isabella Swan s Loneliness in New Moon Novel by Stephenie Meyer. 1.2 Statement of Problem Based on the research background above, the researcher formulates the problem statements as follows: 1. What was Isabella Swan s loneliness in New Moon Novel? 2. Why did Isabella Swan feet lonely in New Moon Novel? 3. How did Isabella Swan solve her loneliness in New Moon Novel? 1.3 Purpose of Study Related to what mentioned in the statement of problem above, the purpose of the study are: 1. To investigate Isabella Swan s loneliness in New Moon Novel. 2. To find out why Isabella Swan felt lonely in New Moon Novel. 3. To describe Isabella Swan solved her loneliness in New Moon Novel.

4 1.4 Significance of Study This study hopefully gives significant to: The readers, the significance of this research is expected to encourage and help the readers to know the reason of their loneliness so that they can try to overcome their loneliness, and also to help them in understanding about novel especially, the topic as loneliness. By analyzing loneliness the readers can learn about the history, conflict and knowledge of the novel. It also can increase and enrich knowledge about literature. The next researcher, hopefully this research can be used as a resources in the next research who are interested to continue this observation by analyzing the next novel. 1.5 Scope and Limitation This research focuses on study of Isabella Swan s loneliness. Meanwhile, the limitation of this study are Isabella Swan s loneliness, the cause of her loneliness, how the way she solves her loneliness in the novel New Moon which written by Stephenie Meyer. 1.6 Definition of Key Terms There are some key terms mentioned in this research. In order to avoid misunderstanding and uncertain meaning, those terms are defined which are defined which are related to the study. Isabella Swan: a fictional character and main character as a protagonist of the New Moon Novel. Loneliness: unpleasant experience that occurs when a person s network of social relations is deficient in some important way (Jong Gierveld in Irwin

5 G. Sasaron: 1985). It means unsatisfied feeling that experienced by people in their networking of social relations. New Moon: the 2 nd part of Twilight series that would be described in this research. Novel: a factious prose narrative or tale of considerable length in which characters and actions representative of the real life of past or present times are portrayed in a plot of more or less complexity (OED in Jeremy Hawthorn, 1985). It means novel is one of prose that a factious narrative or story of long time which the characters and actions as the real life and the plot more or less complicated. Stephenie Meyer: an American author of New Moon Novel.
