Agenda Distracted Driving Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) ADAS User Experience Next Steps
Distracted Driving: What is it? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving.
Four Types of Distraction
Distracted Driving: Consequences 2015 data provided by NHTSA indicates the dangers of distracted driving 10% of fatal crashes & 15% of injury crashes in 2015 were distraction-affected In 2015, there were 3,477 people killed and an estimated additional 391,000 injured in crashes involving distracted drivers
ADAS: Why? ADAS is intended to help the driver When designed with a safe human-machine interface, ADAS should increase car safety
ADAS: Adding Features ADAS systems are becoming more plentiful and sophisticated, but also more confusing and disorienting No industry standards for: Names & Abbreviations ACC: Adaptive Cruise Control DCC: Dynamic Cruise Control SCC: Smart Cruise Control Behavior Alert / Warning (passive system) Assist (active system) Warnings / Alerts Audible / Haptic / Visual / Multiple Settings Early / Normal / Late Cluster / Head Unit / Instrument Panel System Status ON (enabled or disabled) OFF
ADAS: Quality System penetration is growing, trickling down from luxury to non-luxury vehicles, BUT Not all vehicle owners are satisfied with the new technology Emerging trend: dissatisfaction with ADAS systems 18MY JD Power IQS: Total PP100 ADAS Cruise Control Night Vision Park Assist/Backup Collision Avoidance/Alert Blind Spot Monitoring Head-Up Display Lane Departure Warning Self-Parking Not OK!
ADAS: User Experience Blind Spot Collision Warning/Assist JDPA 18MY IQS verbatim FCD * It lights up when nothing is there or even near me while driving. It goes on and off often which makes it very difficult to drive It will indicate that there are cars to our side when there's no one there. We just disabled it, find it to be a nuisance. Indicator cannot be seen during day. Can be seen at night... In car washes, the blind spot monitors and backup sensors go off incessantly and cannot be shut off. Very annoying. * Features, Controls, Displays
ADAS: User Experience Settings & Controls JDPA 18MY IQS verbatim - FCD I am unable to permanently shut this feature off...it keeps turning on and is VERY annoying. Difficult to locate page with controls to turn the feature on and off. Just don't like it at all. Took a while to figure out how to turn it off. Menus and controls are not intuitive, are too complex and difficult to master.
ADAS: User Experience Lane Departure Warning/Assist JDPA 18MY IQS verbatim - FCD... Too many steps and forget the correct buttons as there is so much tech on the car. Feels like it distracts from my safe driving....no clue as to what is for or when to use it. If you do not know when to use a control, it is useless. Not sure how to use this even after reading the manual This feature seems to fight me while driving. System simulates a drunk driver!
ADAS: User Experience Adaptive Cruise Control JDPA 18MY IQS verbatim - FCD I have no idea whether it serves a useful purpose or is simply a marketing gimmick. Do not know how to adjust the distance parameter on the cruise control... You can't see that the system is on... Cannot figure out when and how it engages. Not clear if it will apply brake automatically when there is a possibility of collision. I find it very distracting when it warns of a problem when the driving doesn't always warrant it. Cannot see the following switches because the steering wheel blocks the view: Lane change departure
