2005A: Focus on Simulation Technology Improvements 2005A Delivers Faster, Smarter, Stronger Simulators: DC simulator Harmonic Balance simulator Momentum 3D-Planar EM simulator Solves previously unsolvable problems without compromising accuracy or requiring designs to be simplified.

DC Simulation 2005A Goals for DC Simulator Improvements: Converge 100% of the time with the default setting. Dramatic speed-up with the default setting. Greatly improve DC extracted view simulation capability.

DC Benchmark Suite Results Tough Suite: 82 very tough circuits 2004A: 94% convergence 2005A: 100% convergence Huge Suite: A suite of 3150 circuits 2005A: 100% convergence with default settings Speed-up (cumulative run time of the entire suite): 2004A: 350 minutes 2005A: 55 minutes (6.4X)

Harmonic Balance Simulation The HB engine is the key simulator in ADS. HB is at the heart of many analyses: single-point HB, oscillator analysis & noise, LSSP, swept HB, envelope, Xdb, HB noise, optimization, yield. Improving HB improves your design flow and overall experience with ADS.

Harmonic Balance Simulation Existing HB solver Improve HB engine robustness and speed at its default settings. Users may have to tweak settings to achieve convergence and optimal performance. 2005A goals > 90% convergence with default setting. Near optimal speed with default setting. Improved HB setup usability.

HB Results: Robustness Benchmark suite size of 381 circuits: 2004A: 40 Non-converging 2005A with default settings: 22 Non-converging (93% convergence) 2005A with user-tweaking: 10 Non-converging

HB Results: Speed Harmonic Balance Test Suite of 381 circuits. Average speed-up versus 2004A: 5X. Large/difficult circuits that took >10 minutes in 2004A had a cumulative speed-up of 7X. All 8 circuits with >1000 transistors converged. 2005A cumulative time with default settings beat 2004A time with optimized settings.

HB Results: Speed Cumulative run times: Benchmark suite with user-tweaked settings: 2004A: 4.22 hrs (Time spent in finding the tweaked settings not accounted for.) Benchmark suite with default settings: 2005A: 3.96 hrs (1.06 X)

Harmonic Balance Simulation Easy-to-Use Excellent results with default (auto mode) settings. Intuitive terms for parameter settings. Full access to simulation parameters still available.

Smarter: built-in intelligence reduces simulation setup time. 100% DC Convergence with default settings. 90% HB Convergence with default settings. Stronger: large circuits with thousands of transistors and >250K parasitics have been successfully simulated with DC and Harmonic Balance.

Improved Thick-Conductor Modeling Accurate simulation of thick conductors: Phase I (2003C) automatic 3D expansion for thick conductors. Phase II (2004A) improved surface impedance loss model. Phase III (2005A) horizontal currents on side walls. T W As thickness/width aspect ratios increase, horizontal currents must be included for accurate simulation.
