3. SECTION THREE 3.1. Operation At Switch On Default Switch Settings This describes the output state of each switch at power up as follows TRANSMIT : off UNLOCK: disabled CHANNEL UP AND DOWN : no action TALK THRU : off STS : on LED on Connect 600Ω. Audio input/output feeds to XLR connectors on rear panel. In order to avoid distortion, do not exceed +2dBm on the input/output XLR connectors. Connect antenna system, either separate transmit and receive connections or a single antenna to the rear panel Duplexer socket. Keep the transmit/receive antennas as far away as possible from other radio talkback basestations and check the integrity of all RF connections. N.B. DO NOT OPERATE TRANSMITTER WITHOUT AN ANTENNA OR 50Ω LOAD CONNECTED. WARNING : Power Supply Connection The RTB5211 has no on/off switch and should be connected to a nearby socket outlet that is easily accessible. Observe Supply indication and MPU normal operation by the green LED. If Supply indication shows a red LED then no further operation will be possible. Pressing TRANSMIT for 1 second illuminates TX LED and causes basestation to radiate a signal. Operation of other keys is inhibited. Pressing TRANSMIT again for 1 second toggles operation, i.e. TX LED extinguishes and basestation radiation ceases. Operation of other keys is restored. Pressing CHANNEL UP, either Rx or Tx, causes both radios to increment a channel simultaneously. Pressing CHANNEL DOWN, either Rx or Tx, causes both radios to decrement a channel simultaneously. Holding a CHANNEL key down for 0.5 second causes the key to repeat every 200mS, that is both radios to increment/decrement a channel simultaneously. Pressing UNLOCK for 5 seconds until Unlock LED flashes allows independent operation of the Channel keys for the two radios. Pressing UNLOCK for a further 5 seconds locks the Channel Print Date 31/10/2008 Page 7 of 10 E2057-00MA-01.doc
keys together again and the Unlock LED goes off. Disconnecting the supply will also lock the Channel keys together when the power is restored. Pressing TALKTHRU for 1 seconds illuminates Talkthru LED and enables Talk through mode, that is looping audio output back to audio input. Pressing TALKTHRU for 1 second extinguishes TALKTHRU LED and disables Talk through mode. Disconnecting the supply will also disable Talk through mode when the power is restored. Pressing STS for 1 seconds illuminates STS (Squelch Tail Suppressor) LED and enables Squelch Tail Suppressor mode. Pressing STS for 1 second extinguishes STS LED and disables STS mode. Disconnecting the supply will also disable STS mode when the power is restored. Observe PEAK I/P and PEAK O/P LEDs flickering indicating audio input and output to be peaking at 0dBm at rear panel XLR connectors. 3.2. Modes TALKTHRU allows portable radio semi duplex operation with the RTB5211 re-transmitting the received signal. 'Talk through' operation may also be achieved by connecting XLR AF input to XLR AF output with a balanced XLR lead, in this case TALKTHRU mode should NOT be selected. STS (Squelch Tail Suppressor) provides an instantaneous reduction in audio level during the squelch tail period when an associated portable radio keys up. This is beneficial where the average audio level is low and the high squelch tail amplitude is significant. At Switch On Power Up Transmit Settings This describes the output state sequence of each switch at power up as follows when LK1 on Control PCB is connected. TRANSMIT : off UNLOCK: disabled CHANNEL UP AND DOWN : no action TALK THRU : off STS : on LED on After 5 seconds switch state as follows. TRANSMIT : on UNLOCK: disabled LED on Key Operation CHANNEL UP AND DOWN : no action Key operation is as before. Print Date 31/10/2008 Page 8 of 10 E2057-00MA-01.doc
4. SECTION FOUR 4.1. Technical Description This equipment contains no user serviceable parts inside. Channel programming should be carried out by qualified engineer. The equipment comprises two radios configured to provide a full duplex radio transmitter receiver, which is interfaced to balanced 600Ω line input and output via the Audio I/O PCB. Both rear panel I/O connectors feature differential 600Ω line circuits and terminate and source a 600Ω line at 0dBm. STS (Squelch Tail Suppressor). This circuit, when selected, detects a fast rising edge waveform on the audio receive path such as that produced by the squelch tail, although not speech, and switches an attenuator into the audio output path to instantaneously reduce the level. The detection time is less than five milliseconds while the resulting hole in the audio level is of the order of 50mS. The circuit is reset after 100mS in order to reduce any cumulative dynamic effects. A switched mode power supply allows operation from AC mains while external +12V supply may be used. The two supplies are ORED together via diodes with the mains supply having priority, when present. The switched mode supply will not charge an external battery. Supply present, is indicated on the front panel by green LED and there is no on/off switch. Front panel keys control the two radios with the interface being by microcomputer. Operation and interlocking of the two radios is under software control. Front panel LED status indicators monitor the level of audio present on the 600Ω I/O and the status of the mode switches. The basestation may be configured for two modes of antenna working. Over the entire frequency range separate antennas [receive and transmit] may be deployed. A duplex filter [duplexer], which combines the receive and transmit antennas, may be used as long as the frequency spacing between the two is of the order of 7MHz. E. & O. E.
