Theme/ Mtif Reading Assignment A mtif is a recurrent thematic element in a literary wrk. It is usually ne wrd r a shrt phrase and helps t lead t a lessn a wrk is teaching. Fr example, cmmn mtifs thrugh literature are family, childhd, redemptin and the like. There are many mtifs that run thrugh the summer reading chices. As yu read yur nvel, I want yu t chse ne mtif belw n which t fcus. Circle yur chice. Friendship Family Curage Nn-cnfrmity Pwer Manipulatin War Abuse Identity Scial status Try t chse a mtif t which yu can relate in yur wn life. That will help yu in making cnnectins. As yu read yu need t find at least five qutatins (write them dwn with the page number) that wuld supprt yur mtif. Try t keep in mind hw that mtif can help yu find a theme. A theme is a universal human truth. Universal means it shuld nt be specific t the bk but t life and the human cnditin. A theme cannt be just ne wrd and des nt tell peple what t d. Finally, the theme must keep the whle wrk in mind, especially the end. In the end, I want yu t lk at the qutatins yu have chsen and yur ideas abut yur mtif and try t determine a theme. This theme will be the basis f the paper yu will write when yu cme back t schl in August. Here is an example: The example is ging t be frm a mvie s as nt t use the bks yu are reading. The Princess Bride is an amazing mvie (that I ttally encurage yu t watch) and culd use many f these same mtifs. Let s use the mtif f friendship. If I were reading this bk, I wuld be paying attentin t when the idea f friendship was mentined. I wuld be marking the qutatins and the page numbers. It starts ut with the friendship between Buttercup and Westley which eventually turns int lve. There is als the friendship between Fezzik and Inig which lasts thrugh the wrk. As I m nticing all f this, thugh, I als need t be thinking abut what lessn the authr might be trying t teach abut the idea f friendship. After I have finished the bk and written my five qutatins, I will lk thrugh them and try t determine what lessns were taught. Here are tw examples f themes I might use: 1. Friendship can last thrugh any turmil as lng as each persn always has faith in the ther. 2. If peple have true friends, then they can make it thrugh any difficult situatin. Let s g back up and make sure these themes have fllwed the directins frm the definitin.

A theme is a universal human truth. Universal means it shuld nt be specific t the bk but t life and the human cnditin. A theme cannt be just ne wrd and des nt tell peple what t d. Finally, the theme must keep the whle wrk in mind, especially the end. These ARE universal. Ntice hw neither f these themes references any f the specific characters frm the wrk. Instead, they attempt t shw what Glding might have been teaching abut the idea f friendship by using this stry. These are NOT ne wrd and they d nt tell peple what t d. Finally, these d keep the end f the wrk in mind. If they all died at the end, these wuld nt wrk because friendship did nt get them thrugh any difficult situatin. Weak themes: Telling peple what t d-- Peple shuld always supprt their friends thrugh thick and thin. We are nt attempting t dictate hw peple behave r suggest that the authr intended that, but instead, we are gleaning a lessn frm the stry that we might chse t live by as we age. One wrd The theme is friendship. This gives n lessn and is simply a mtif. Nt universal Buttercup learns that if she just had faith in Westley, everything wuld have been kay. Thugh we are using the bk t decide upn the lessn, the theme mves away frm the bk t shw what is true fr everyne and nt just Buttercup. Nw it is yur turn Use the wrksheet prvided, and fill in the fllwing infrmatin. Yu may either print the wrksheet, type it ut n the cmputer, r cpy the wrksheet (neatly) nt a blank sheet f white paper. 1. Select yur bk 2. Select yur mtif 3. Read the bk s underlining qutatins that relate t that mtif 4. When yu are dne reading, lk at the qutatins and the ideas yu learned and create a theme fllwing the rules abve. 5. Write dwn yur theme and yur five qutatins that wuld best supprt that theme. 6. Write a 1 paragraph respnse that describes yur theme using evidence frm the text. 7. Finally, write an 8-10 sentence bjective summary f yur bk. Make sure yu re including the wh, what, where, and when. 8. This assignment is due the first day f schl and will be entered as yur first assessment grade fr language arts. Oh, ne last nte. Yu shuld write yur qutatins fllwing MLA guidelines. All citatins will have qutatin marks and n end punctuatin (r cmma at the end f the citatin befre the qutatin marks) inside the qutatin marks unless it is a questin mark r exclamatin mark. Otherwise the perid ges utside f the parenthetical citatin nly. See examples belw. Anybdy want a peanut? (65). As yu wish (5).
